World Cup of Agriculture Greetings from the secretary-general of the Israeli Agricultural Association and President of the exhibition, (Abu) Avshalom Vilan: "We have a lot to contribute to the global world" The International Agricultural Exhibition - "Agro-Mashov" 2011, is a mirror of Israeli agriculture and its associated industries. Precisely in the current year, 2011, which has been a year of natural disasters - a year of global crisis in food prices - I find great importance in presenting the achievements we have reached, exposing the bright side – and there is a lot to take pride in. Despite the water shortage and problems of foreign workers, which torments us day and night, we have a lot to contribute to the global world and I am convinced that we know how to do this! To all the guests of the 21st “Agro-Mashov annual international agricultural conference and exhibition – I wish you productive discussions and an interesting and fruitful exhibition! One of the main reasons for this is the increase in the price of food, resulting from the global food crisis World experts predict this is just the beginning of a process, which reflects a growing shortage of food worldwide, which is the result of several factors: A. Dramatic increase in world population - in the past 70 years the world population has increased from 2 to 7 billion people. B. Dramatic increase in consumption of animal products (due to the rise in living standards of large populations, who are increasing their consumption of animal-based food). It is important to note that one kilo of animal products requires five times the amount of agricultural area and water than growing plant-based foods. C. Due to the effects of desertification and other phenomena - the world’s areas available for agriculture are getting smaller. D. The growing shortage of water available for agriculture. There is no doubt that global agriculture must undergo change and adjust to the major changes taking place in the world. Agriculture needs to be very smart and sophisticated, agriculture that can produce more crops with much less water and land. Agriculture of the future will need to know how to use water and the oceans as a platform for food production. I can note with satisfaction that the 21st “Agro-Mashov” international exhibition will make a great contribution to the world, both by the technologies that are displayed in the exhibition for the use of farmers around the world, and through the discussions that are taking place here. During the conference and the exhibition there will be five international symposia, which are really global brainstorming, that will create innovative and unconventional solutions. In recent years, the “Agro-Mashov” exhibition has become an international meeting place of utmost importance, due to the geographical location of the exhibition - between three continents: Africa, Asia and Europe. Israel, which has provided groundbreaking developments to the world, such as drip irrigation, computerized dairy farm, and more advanced hybrid seeds - is an ideal place to expose new technologies that will help solve the crisis currently gripping the world. I congratulate all the exhibitors, visitors, lecturers at the various symposia and discussions and wish everyone that we will meet again next year, at the 22nd “Agro-Mashov” exhibition – when hopefully the global food crisis will have moderated. Due to the agricultural research and development, Israel has become a leading exporter of knowledge, technologies and agricultural inputs, and has won extravagant praise from international organizations and bodies. The latest technologies, displayed at the exhibition, are providing the solutions to the challenges facing Israeli agriculture, primarily lack of water, field hands, land and capital. In the framework of the exhibition, labor-saving and automation technologies will be displayed. The transition to mechanized work is the main change that will take place in the agricultural sector over the next five years, along with the continuing trend of switching to green agriculture. I want to congratulate the guests of honor at the exhibition - Brazil, Russia, India and China - which are the countries with the most rapid economic growth today. The rise in living standards in these countries and the increasing consumption of livestock products require global re-assessment regarding food supply. Israel has much to contribute on this issue and she will be happy to make her knowledge available to other countries. Events such as this exhibition are a magnet for foreign delegations whose presence creates the infrastructure needed to develop business relationships and to disseminate worldwide Israeli knowledge and technologies.
