STANDING UP FOR PRINCIPALS Looking for a bastion of stability? Think of it, over the past six years, Israel has had five Prime Ministers! In stunning contrast, the Pretoria Boys School has had, over the past one hundred years, onh six prinicipals. Clearly, the Pretoria boys wear down their leaders less than we Israelis do. Dapper in his school blazer and tie, this former Chief of Police for Haifa, gave an emotional closing speech. Does anyone remember the news before September Ilth? Competing with the likes of Congressman Gary Condit and the British bovine maladies, was the United Nations Conference on Racism in Durban. It is true that since September Ilth, there has been little or no media coverage on the impact of the conference. People understandably have been cynically rhetorical, 'What conference?' It is easy to relegate the conference to a forgotten footnote in history, but for Jews throughout the world, and more particularly our community in South Africa, the conference wai no forgotten footnote, but a wake-up call. The global Islamic axis sought at the con ference to mobilise international support to delegitimise the State of Israel, equate unequivo cally racism and apartheid with Zionism, and to hijack the holocaust. The holocaust was no longer being expressed in the singular, but the plural. Why refer to the holocaust of the Jewish people some six decades ago, when we can talk of today's holocaust of the Palestinian people? This usurpation of history dramatically amplified the new narrative of yesterday's victims as today's villains. Demonstrators in the streets of Cape Town. chp Zundel Segal, who more than anything else, was the personifica tion of Zionism, died recently in his 88th year. He came to South Africa as a young boy steeped in Hebrew culture and Zionist fervour which he had acquired from an eru June 1946 ■ A march through the streets of Johannesburg dite father and in the in protest of the British Mandatory Government's arrest Lithuanian day school of Jewish Agency leaders in Palestine, (l-r): Louis Pincus, system. He held a Bernard Gering, Zundel Segal, Simon Kuper, Morris number of posts in the Kentridge, Rabbi LJ. Rabinowitz South African Zionist hierarchy, such as chairman of the Transvaal Zionist Youth Executive, member of the SAZF Executive and chairman of its Youth Department. When the N M E M O R I A A V

non-party "General Zionists" emerged in the party framework, he was one of the mosT^^ enthusiastic founders of the United Zionist Party. A dominating figure at many senior and youth conferences, he always impressed his listeners by his sincere and eloquent espousal of the national cause and aliyah. In Israel, Zundel served for many years on the Telfed Executive. When he made aliyah in 1952, he approached the government inquiring what was most needed in the fledgling state. He was told that the huge influx of immigrants created a demand for beds and mattresses which couldn't be met with the present industrial facilities. He established MEFI, a South African-sponsored furniture factory in Netanya, building it up to be a model business enterprise. MEFI eventually became a household word, and Zundel would often quip, "Half the women in Israel sleep on my beds - and what's more, they pay me!" Zundel was a great Zionist, a good Jew and a mensch who loved making people laugh with his wonderful sense of humour. He is survived by his wife Zipporah, who as a talented artist has made an outstanding contribution over many years to Israel's cultural life, and is active in the Association of International Women, as well as by two sons, a daughter and four grandchildren.

Telfed greatly mourns the recent passing of Doris Lankin. It was in the small town of Kroonstad in the Orange Free State, that Doris' future in the IZL underground was cast. Her mother was a pertinacious Revisionist, and her older brothers were involved in Betar. Before coming on aliyah, Doris accompanied her first husband, Shmuel Katz (the only former South African to be elected to the Knesset), to wartime London, where he had been asked by Jabotinsky to edit the Jewish Standard. Doris, who was working in an armaments Doris Lankin factory, found time to contribute to the newspaper, as well. Arriving in Palestine in 1946, she immediately began her undercover activities for the IZL. Her pucker English accent, coupled with a British passport, were vital in her IZL service during the fractious twilight days of the British Mandate. In addition to more mundane duties, Doris was sent on clandestine missions: to unfamiliar places meeting unfamiliar people, using code names and acting as a courier. After the war, Doris studied law at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and served as the Legal Editor of the Jerusalem Post for more than twenty years. She married Eliyahu Lankin, a leader of the IZL, and accompanied him to South Africa where he served as Israeli ambassador. Doris is survived by her daughter Lynore, son-in-law Ronnie and three grandchildren. cKP The passing of Leslie Shanan in August 2001, put an end to a variegated tapestry of one of our most versatile (albeit reticent) olim. Born in Bloemfontein in 1921 to a family with strong Jewish roots (his uncle was the renowned Harry Moss-Morris), his life was a succession of unique achievements.

Growing up in Durban in the Depression years of the 1930s, Leslie was nourished by the ideology of Habonim. After graduating as an engineer, he founded the Halutz Group, and established the hachshara in in 1942. In 1945, he left for Palestine with one of the 36 certificates granted to South African chalutzim. "I believed we were going to change the world," declared Les, who settled on Kfar Blum. He was active in national defence, joining the Wingatc commandos in violent clashes with a hostile (British) Les explorini> ilw administration. Taking leave from the kibbutz, he was active in Negev, 1952. negotiating with the departing British army in taking over their installations, notably Tel Hashomer. He returned to Kfar Blum to face the Syrian invasion of 1948. Behind the scenes, Les over many decades remained active in Israel's military intelligence, spending nearly thirty years as an Air Force intelligence officer. Many of the pilots who have led the Israeli Air Force passed through his squadron. Les studied soil conservation under Prof. Lowdermilk. A recipient of a UN Fellowship in 1953, he became Israel's Chief Engineer of Soil Conservation, concentrating on the Negev. Working with Hebrew University researchers at Shivta and Avdat, he applied biblical methods of terracing and irrigation - and subsequently published his findings. After the Six-Day War, Les went into private practice and undertook innumerable projects across the country and in East Asia. He worked as an international consultant to the World Bank specialising in India's water needs. He settled in Savyon and became its mayor. Leslie suffered two bitter war-time blows - the death of his brilliant officer son in October 1973, and the blasting by an Iraqi scud in February 1991, of his home, which he painstakingly reconstructed. His autobiography, published in 1996, is noteworthy for its penetrating and critical views of political and economic events. He is survived by his wife Val and two children. Sam Levin
