THE BEST PART OF TRAVELLING

2

Tours & Activities: the tourism industry has been calling them ancillaries since forever but, we believe, they truly are the best part of travelling.

And the latest trends and stats prove us right.

T&A is currently the third-largest travel segment, ranking right after flights and hotels and accounting for 10% of global travel revenue: according to the latest surveys, more than 95% of all travellers booked an organized tour, visited a museum or reached one specific attraction.

Among these travellers, a good 50% purchases T&A once they reach the chosen destination: letting them know the advantages of booking in advance (e.g. a decreased risk of scams, proper information, reliable customer support and so on) can at the same time improve travel quality while extending the traveller’s length of stay.

Offering activities can result in a win-win situation and represents a good chance for up- and cross-selling, both for travel agencies and tour operators.

In the following pages, you’ll find the largest T&A offer available in Rome: prime tours, low-budget services, visits to all the main touristic attractions at different prices and times of the day, experiences created for those who already know the city, guided or independent day-trips to Italy’s best destinations for arts and culture.

Because Tours & Activities are, to us, anything but ancillaries.

4

Making memories is a big part of travelling, that’s why we do all our best to provide unforgettable tours and impeccable guest experience.

#UnescoJewelsofItaly

We feature monolingual walking tours in the Eternal City or Full Day Tours outside Rome (Rome Countryside, Assisi, Tivoli, , , Positano, Florence or Venice) for small groups who desire to discover the cultural heritage with a special attention to Italian Unesco Sites and the local gastronomy. We guarantee skip the line access to museums and cultural sites, with professional and authorized local guides.

#UnescoJewelsofItaly as of July 2019, Italy has 55 sites featured on the UNESCO's World Heritage Sites list, making it the #1 country on the planet with the largest number of world "cultural" heritage sites

The Unesco World Heritage Sites are places of cultural or natural importance to the common heritage of humanity; Carrani Tours - I Love Rome offers products and services throughout the entire territory of Italy, discovering most of these important sites: Pompeii and its Ruins, Assisi & St. Francis Basilica, Amalfi Coast, Florence, Pisa, Cinque Terre, Tivoli and its Villas and the Historic Centre of Rome. Passion and professionalism builds a network of tours and visits, counting with more than 800.000 Travellers per year, from all over the world.

UNESCO, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is known as the "intellectual" agency of the United Nations; it was created in 1945 in order to respond to the firm belief of nations, forged by two world wars in less than a generation, that political and economic agreements are not enough to build a lasting peace. UNESCO strives to build networks among nations that enable this kind of solidarity building intercultural understanding: through protection of heritage and support for cultural diversity; the idea of World Heritage is created to protect sites of outstanding universal value; while each World Heritage Site remains part of the legal territory of the state wherein the site is located, UNESCO considers it in the interest of the international community to preserve each site.

Sistine Chapel on your own: exclusive entrance at opening

The 54th gallery of the Vatican Museums is the famed Sistine Chapel. Completed around 1483, the Sistine Chapel is arguably one of the most admired sacred spaces in the world: still used for religious purposes such as the Papal conclave, the process through which a new Pope is chosen, it houses some incredible artwork.

The amazing frescoes located within are legendary: Michelangelo’s The Last Judgement is world-famous and even appeared in movies - think Dan Brown’s Angels and Demons.

Being such a gem, the Sistine Chapel ends up being the most visit area of the Vatican Museums: it’s almost impossible to access it when the crowds are away.

Almost, we said. Because our special early access ticket will actually allow you to enter the Chapel at a privileged time, the opening, before anybody else and before the general public is granted access.

And, as the entrance ticket has no time limits, you’ll have the whole day to explore the rest of the Museums, at your own pace.

Reach our meeting point in the Vatican area and meet our assistant: they’ll let you in skipping all the lines through our exclusive official partners’ entrance, you’ll walk inside the empty halls and corridors and you’ll finally see the Stories of Moses, the Stories of Jesus and Michelangelo’s Last Judgment.

If you dream to see the Sistine Chapel in an intimate atmosphere you just can’t miss this tour!

The ancient art offer is huge: Roman and Greek statues, a vast Etruscan collection, lots of artefacts from Ancient Egypt and an incredible picture gallery: the Pinacoteca Vaticana includes works by art geniuses like Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Raphael, and Giotto. If contemporary and modern art is your thing, head to the Modern Religious Art collection, housing paintings and sculptures from Carlo Carrà, Giorgio de Chirico, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Marc Chagall, Paul Klee, Salvador Dalí, or Pablo Picasso. And swing by the Raphael Rooms and by the Sistine Chapel, two of the most popular attractions inside the Museums.

The guide will tell you everything about the Raphael Rooms and their exceptional frescoes, including The School Of Athens, and will bring you to the Sistine Chapel, whose ceiling is one of the cornerstone works of High Renaissance art.

The tour couldn’t be complete without a visit to St. Peter’s, the Basilica that isn’t only the largest church in the world, but that contains several pieces of fine art: think the canopy designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini or the Pietà by Michelangelo.

And to top it off, gaze the majestic St. Peter’s Square, the open space which lies before the basilica, redesigned by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and being itself an architectural masterpiece of the Baroque age.

4M PM  SKIP THE LINE!  GROUP MAX. 30 PARTICIPANTS

Ancient basilicas and underground catacombs

Rome’s churches are among the most beautiful and ancient in the Western world: spend an afternoon discovering some of them on this guided tour.

Reach us at our meeting point, where you’ll meet your professional guide who’ll provide you with a convenient audio receiver and earphones, to make sure you won’t miss a single word.

We’ll visit Saint Mary Major, an ancient, stunning Basilica. It was built on the summit of the Esquiline Hill: its original architecture was classical, maybe to convey the idea the place represented the ancient Imperial as well as the Christian Rome. Despite several additional construction projects and damages, the Basilica retains the core of its original 442 AD structure.

Even more ancient, Saint John Lateran Basilica: the oldest public church in Rome as well as the highest-ranked papal major basilica. It stands over the remains of a military Roman imperial fort established in AD 193 that was later converted into a place of worship and suffered several damages due to earthquakes and fires: the stunning façade as it appears today was completed in 1735.

In the nearby, the Scala Sancta (the Holy Stairs): white marble steps encased in wooden ones.

According to Catholic tradition, they formed the staircase leading up to the praetorium of Pontius Pilate in Jerusalem on which Jesus stepped during his Passion.

And talking ancient, the Catacombs of St. Callixtus deserve a visit: these underground burial places, outside the walls of the city, were carved through tuff, a soft volcanic rock. More than fifty martyrs and early Popes were buried in this huge graveyard.

Pope Francis’ Public Audience in the Vatican City

Rome offers the unique chance of living an immersive experience in Catholic traditions, seeing Pope Francis himself during Wednesday’s Papal Audience: a very intense point of contact between the Pope and the faithful coming from the four corners of the world.

Get your pre-booked tickets to grant a seat as close as possible to the Pope, be supported by an expert local guide and an audio device, and be sure to get perfectly on time at such a busy and requested happening.

The Audience may be either celebrated in the majestic venue of St. Peter’s Square or in the dedicated Nervi Hall, according to the Vatican’s schedule: in case of the former, you’ll reach the Piazza walking in one of the most beautiful areas in town, passing by the monumental Castel Sant'Angelo and along Via Della Conciliazione.

You’ll pass the security checkpoints to the Vatican City accompanied by a professional guide, who’ll also suggest where to sit and who’ll be happy to help to make your arrival easy, despite the crowd.

The Audience will end around 11:30/11:45 AM: right after you will meet our guide again, in Via Della Conciliazione 48, to give the audio device back.

Luxury dinner with superior wine pairings in the Pantheon area

Group sizes of no more than 10 persons

Spoil yourself after a long, busy day spent around Rome sightseeing: have dinner in a group of fewer than 10 people in a stunning, exclusive location in the Pantheon area.

Our trusted local gourmand will be your guide for this indulgent evening: find them at our meeting point in Piazza Della Minerva and reach the elegant, family-run restaurant that we reserved for you, where the owners will greet you with a smile and their typical Italian style.

45

This surprising place doesn’t only offer delicious food in a stunning location: it also owns a prestigious historical wine cellar, built during ancient times and discovered during the renovation works of the palazzo. It was only on this occasion that a majestic Roman structure was identified at the cellar floor: entirely made of squared blocks and incorporated in the sixteenth-century building that lays right above.

Our aperitivo will be here, on the cellar floor: a glass of sparkling prosecco wine, paired with a platter of traditional cured meats and cheeses from different Italian regions, just to whet your appetite.

Afterward, you’ll move on to the actual dinner: a traditional dish of paccheri pasta with cacio e pepe sauce, followed by beef or fish course and a side of cheese and vegetables.

Every dish will be, obviously, paired with a glass of superior wine carefully selected by the restaurant’s sommelier, and the dinner will end with a selection of desserts: an immersive experience in Italian food history and culture that you won’t forget.

ITALIAN CUISINE: TASTING TOURS & COOKING CLASSES Only for food lovers in Small Groups!

TASTING TOURS

M8 PM  TIPS & TRICKS: COFFEE AND ICE CREAM  SMALL GROUP MAX. 12 PARTICIPANTS

Espresso, tiramisù and gelato tasting tour

Group sizes of no more than 12 persons

Everybody loves some good Italian artisanal gelato, a tiny cup of hot espresso and a decadent portion of creamy tiramisù, and there’s no better chance to satisfy your sweet tooth than your Italian holiday.

But, in a city as big and crowded as Rome, the risk of bumping into overpriced tourist traps is real. What to do, then?

You can try your luck, or you can reach us under Bernini’s elephant and obelisk, very close to the Pantheon, for this two-hour-and-half walking food tour.

Our trusted local food connoisseur will introduce to you all those mouth- watering local treats you’ve been dreaming about, giving you info and answering questions.

The setting is, of course, stunning: all the coffee and pastry shops that you’ll visit are all located in the city center, so keep your selfie stick ready!

One tasting after another, you’ll learn to recognize what is considered high quality when it comes to Italian food: how can you recognize an authentic artisan gelato from an industrially processed one? What ingredients are needed in order to prepare a good home-made tiramisù? And do Italians really drink cappuccino only before lunch?

You’ll go back home being an expert in the field and...with a full stomach!

La dolce vita, the sweet life, couldn’t get sweeter than this.

Rome food tour

Group sizes of no more than 12 persons

Foodies of the world, unite! Whether you’re a seasoned gourmand or just a food lover wishing to find out more about Roman cuisine and Italian food traditions, reach our meeting point. You’ll join our local food connoisseur guide for a food walk, in a group of no more than 12 people (and yes, you’ll try and taste lots of different treats!)

We’ll meet mid-morning and enjoy a lovely walking tour through local food markets, grocery stores and gelato shops in the areas of Campo De’ Fiori, Trastevere, and the Jewish Ghetto.

49

We know that exercise makes one hungry, that’s why we thought you’d appreciate some pit-stops. For instance, you’ll enjoy a slice of freshly baked crispy pizza bianca (Rome’s own version of focaccia) cut in half horizontally and filled with thin slices of freshly cut mortadella: a traditional, more-Roman- than-the-Colosseum easy snack that locals love.

And what about trying a supplì? This little ball of deep-fried tomato sauce risotto with a heart of melted mozzarella cheese is everyone’s favorite street food.

Pasta will be on the list too, along with some dishes from the Roman Jewish tradition: the carciofo alla giudia, a Jewish style deep-fried artichoke that resembles a tiny sunflower, as well as filetto di baccalà, a fleshy fillet of cod, battered and deep-fried.

And save some space for dessert, because we won’t skip our portion of artisan gelato!

It’s here that, back in the 2nd century AD, the emperor Hadrian built his majestic villa: a luxury country residence where he used to retreat and where he lived his late years.

The huge complex includes more than 30 buildings, several swimming pools, former thermal stations and covers an area that’s larger than a square kilometer, which gives quite an idea of this place’s aim: to show the greatness, opulence and vast power of the emperor.

In the 16th century, much of the remaining marble and statues were removed

from Hadrian's Villa by Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este, to decorate his own villa located nearby: Villa d’Este, another UNESCO world heritage site.

And what makes this system of fountains such an incredible masterpiece of engineering is that it works entirely by the force of gravity, without pumps.

Florence and Uffizi Gallery by high-speed train

Florence is a must-see city, and now you can reach it in around one hour and a half.

Join us at a meeting point and you’ll catch the high-speed train from Rome Termini station with our professional assistant: they’ll travel with you, disclosing local tips and pieces of information to get you in the mood for this special day-trip.

You’ll walk through Piazza Della Signoria, the very center of Florence, and Piazza Santa Croce, named after the Basilica that overlooks it, burial place of Michelangelo, Galileo, and Machiavelli.

Florence was the hippest city in the world when it was ruled by the Medici family: every artist wanted to live and work in the fifteenth century’s place-to- be. The Medici family thus funded and gathered an incredibly large art collection, later donated to the city. Giotto, Botticelli, Leonardo Da Vinci: these

are only a few of the authors of the masterpieces that you’ll see in this world- renowned art gallery.

Joining our guided tour will also include a typical meal in a selected restaurant, giving you a comprehensive Florentine experience. But if you’re on a budget, yet don’t want to miss the chance to visit Florence in a day, go for our convenient train & museum-only option to tour the Uffizi on your own and spend the day around town as you wish.

Venice by high-speed train

Being on holiday in Rome doesn’t mean you have to give up your dream of seeing Venice. You can visit this unique city on this one-day train trip from Rome.

In the morning, meet your tour assistant at our meeting point a few steps away from Rome’s Termini station, and board the high-speed rail to Venice: in less than 4 hours you’ll reach the city of lovers.

Move around town using the vaporetto, the local water bus: we’ll provide you with a convenient 12-hour-valid ticket pass.

Head to St. Mark’s Square and take your time to merge into the crowd: stroll around through the picturesque alleys and canals, spend some time shopping, sip a cup of espresso in one of the stunning historical coffee shops or try a cicchetto, the local way of calling a fast drink plus snack.

You’ll love St. Mark’s Basilica, a majestic church built in the unique Italian - Byzantine style: due to its opulent design and gold ground mosaics it’s also known by the nickname chiesa d'oro, meaning church of gold. Thanks to our skip-the-line access ticket and the audio receiver with earphones, you’ll learn everything about it.

But what makes Venice really special is the fact that it’s built on 118 small islands separated by canals and linked by more than 400 bridges.

That’s why we think you’ll enjoy taking a ride by ferry boat along the Gran Canal to admire these unique buildings that seem to float on the waters: a must see before going back to Venice Santa Lucia train station and traveling back to Rome.

The tiny island of Capri has it all: good cuisine, jaw-dropping nature, lovely weather, stunning sights and one of the bluest waters in the whole .

Take one day off from the cityscapes and reach this island from Rome.

We’ll leave early in the morning: wait for us to pick you up at your centrally located hotel, reach our meeting point, where you’ll be welcomed by our tour leader.

We’ll land on the island and tour around with a professional guide, visiting the famous Piazzetta and admiring the from afar. Then, we’ll have an amazing lunch at a panoramic restaurant, another great chance to feast on Italian cuisine.

But most of all we’ll visit the spectacular Blue Grotto.

A marine temple during Roman times, its bottom hosted three statues of the Roman sea gods Neptune and Triton, and it was used as the personal swimming hole of Emperor Tiberius.

Nowadays swimming is forbidden here, and only small rowboats guided by local experts are allowed in the tiny grotto.

Once inside, the view is incredible: sunlight, passing through an underwater cavity shines through the seawater and creates a brilliant blue-to-emerald reflection that illuminates the water in the shady cavern.

In the late afternoon, we’ll sail back to Naples and, from there, we’ll travel back to Rome leaving behind the unforgettable colorful island of Capri.

M6 AM  TIPS & TRICKS: HANDMADE PASTA  SMALL GROUP MIN. 2 - MAX. 8 PARTICIPANTS  ONE DAY TOUR

Cooking class in the Roman countryside

Group sizes of no more than 8 persons (min. 2)

Nothing speaks more authentic Italian than visiting an ancient village off the beaten tourist track, especially if you add cooking and eating to the picture.

We chose Mazzano Romano, a special location 35 km north of Rome: this Medieval town is right inside the protected area of the Veio Regional Park.

Reach our meeting point: in a group of 2 up to 8 people, you’ll travel to Mazzano Romano by car. Wear comfortable clothes and avoid your best shoes, because you’ll join our trusted chef to either go grocery shopping at a farmer’s market or, according to season, you’ll reach a lavish farm! Here you’ll pick by hand all of the ingredients required for your lunch: seasonal veggies, fragrant herbs, and freshly laid eggs.

Once in the kitchen, you’ll learn how to prepare every item on the menu: antipasti, several kinds of hand-made fresh pasta, a second course and a lovely dessert.

This step-by-step class that employs easy techniques is suitable for aspiring cooks of all ages and will let you become a pasta pro, perfectly able to replicate the whole menu once you’re back home.

You’ll lunch to your own preparations, perfectly paired with some good wine and maybe you’ll find out that you have a real talent for Italian cuisine!

Then, enjoy the countryside and relax: in the afternoon we’ll take you back to Rome.
