On 30 December, he wrote to Father Le Gobien in Paris, answering the latter’s query what would make a good mission- ary for China1. Chavagnac replied that after three months in China and having talked to many missionaries, he had some notions: the ideal candidate would be someone who is determined to love Christ, prepared to accommodate to a climate, customs, dress, and food completely different from those of the French nation; he admonished further2: Il ne faut point de gens qui se laissent dominer à leur naturel ; une humeur trop vive feroit icy d’étranges ravages. -

Na počátku byl překlad úvodu k Da xue 大學 do latiny, publikovaný v Římě roku 1593. Nicméně, první překlad konfuciánských klasických knih, jenž přitáhl značnou pozornost, byl Confucius Sinarum Philosophus, publikovaný v Paříži v roce 1687. Tato publikace obsahovala komentovaný překlad tří ze Čtyř knih konfuciánského kánonu. Nový překlad uvedených knih byl vydán v Praze v roce 1711. Jeho autorem byl François Noël (1651–1729), belgický (vlámský) básník, dramatik a jezuita v Číně. Jeho Sinensis Imperii Libri Classici Sex obsahovaly nový překlad prvních tří z již dříve přeložených Čtyř knih a byl doplněn o Mencia (Mengzi 孟子). V této své knize rovněž zahrnul i Klasickou knihu synovské úcty (Xiao jing 孝經), jednu z třinácti klasických knih, a Malé či Základní učení (Xiao Xue 小學), sbírku textů pro děti pořízenou Zhu Xim 朱熹. Překlady jsou rozděleny do malých, číslovaných oddílů, stejně jako čínský originál. Pokud jsou uvedeny poznámky, často na konci úseku, jsou obvykle doprovázeny jménem komentátora. Noëlova práce se jeví jako důležitý pokus o vědeckou prezentaci starověkého textu, snad v záměrném kontrastu k cílům jesuitů, kteří sestavili knihu Confucius Sinarum Philosophus o půl století dříve. -

												The Jesuit Translation and Interpretation of the Yijing (Classic of Changes) in Historical and Cultural Perspective
International Forum of Teaching and Studies Vol. 16 No. 2 2020 The Jesuit Translation and Interpretation of the Yijing (Classic of Changes) in Historical and Cultural Perspective Yang Ping Zhejiang International Studies University, Hangzhou, China [Abstract] This article examines the Jesuit translation and interpretation of the Yijing (I Ching, or Classic of Changes) from the historical and cultural perspective. The Jesuits dissected Chinese characters for religious interpretation, equated the trigrams and hexagrams with Christian conceptions, and linked Chinese cultural heroes with biblical figures in order to establish compatibility between the Yijing and the Bible. Although the Jesuit hermeneutical strategy described as “Figurism” failed in the end, this interpretive approach was part of a long tradition of Yijing exegesis, textual transmission, and cultural transformations, which sheds new light on questions of cross-cultural exchanges and understanding. [Keywords] The Yijing, Jesuits, translation, interpretation, Figurism Introduction The Yijing (I Ching, or Classic of Changes, 易經) began as a divination manual about three thousand years ago in ancient China, but it evolved to become “the first of the [Chinese] classics.” With its philosophical sophistication, psychological potential, and encyclopedic comprehensiveness, it has had unrivalled prestige in China since ancient times. As Steve Moore puts it: “If the importance of books is measured by the numbers of their readers, the amount of commentary written on them, the quantity of editions and translations…then surely two would appear far ahead of the rest of the field. One, of course, is the Christian Bible. The other, though it may surprise readers brought up in Western traditions of literature and learning (and especially those who regard it as little more than a fortune-telling book), is the I Ching, or “Book of Changes” (Hacker et al., 2002, p. -

The Sinarum Philosophus fits inside the debate among Europeans about how to read the Chinese classics. The very nature of this debate, with deep philosophical and theological implications, made the Jesuits engage Chinese classics at a very rational level, instead of a more metaphorical approach. In this chapter, we shall propose a model of cross-cultural hermeneutics, identifying the different layers of the Western and Chinese traditions involved in the translation of the Confucian classics in the West. 1 Long Genesis What was to become the Sinarum Philosophus went through three different stages. -

In the history of Christianity's proselytizing activities in China, three groups of Christian missionaries came to the fore at three different times. In chronological order, they are the Nestorians, the Catholics, and the Protestants. This paper centers on the manuscripts and the rare books from or about East Asia in tie Special Collections Divi sion.' THE ROLE OF URBAN REAL ESTATE IN JESUIT FINANCES AND NETWORKS BETWEEN EUROPE AND CHINA, 1612-1778 by Frederik Vermote A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in The Faculty of Graduate Studies (History) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) January 2013 © Frederik Vermote, 2013 Abstract This dissertation examines the role of urban real estate in the finances and networks of the Jesuit missions in China. Starting in 1612, when Jesuit missionaries working in China envisioned for the first time a strategy for making the missions financially independent from Europe, I will investigate how and why it took until the second half of the eighteenth century for the Christian communities in China to become financially self-sustaining. The procurators and their subordinate treasurers, the Jesuits primarily in charge of the financial management of the missions, are the subject of this dissertation. How did they combine the resources and personnel extracted from Europe, India, and China to establish an autonomous financial foundation for the missions in China? This dissertation argues that their most reliable source of income was revenue from investments in urban real estate. The arc of this dissertation spans both the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries examining the Portuguese and the French Jesuit missions in China. Through a close analysis of Jesuit procurators’ activities and personal networks this dissertation will assert that while they realized the necessity of economic integration in the global missions early on, procurators encountered great problems in realizing this goal. As such, this dissertation recognizes the limitations of global networks by exploring the role of global contact and the circulation of missionaries, money, and mail and by looking at the Jesuit search for financial opportunities in the local and regional economy to become self-sustaining communities. -

ARTICLES Page 2 is blank Chinese Buddhism and the Threat of Atheism in Seventeenth-Century Europe Thierry Meynard Sun Yat-sen University When the Europeans first came to Asia, they met with the multiform presence of Buddhism. They gradually came to understand that a common religious tradition connected the different brands of Buddhism found in Sri Lanka, Thailand, Japan, and China. I propose here to examine a presentation of Buddhism written in Guangzhou by the Italian Jesuit Prospero Intorcetta (1626–1696) around the year 1668. This text was later edited by the Flemish Jesuit Philippe Couplet (1623–1693) and pub- lished in Paris in 1687, within an encyclopedia on Chinese thought titled Confucius Sinarum Philosophus (The Chinese Philosopher Confucius, hereafter called CSP). In the first part of this study, I shall introduce the background of the Jesuit encounter with Buddhism, first in Japan and then in China, as well as their literary production on the subject. Then, I shall examine Intorcetta’s presentation of Chinese Buddhism, especially his understanding of the two faces of Buddhism: Pure Land Buddhism, which he categorized as superstition, and Chan Buddhism, categorized as atheism. These two notions of superstition and atheism seem contradictory, but in fact they are derived from Intorcetta’s interpretation of the Buddhist theory of the “two truths.” I shall conclude with an evaluation of Intorcetta’s account. SPECIAL ISSUE: Studying THE ORIENT IN Lithuania Introduction: Tracing the bicentennial history of Oriental studies in Lithuania Audrius Beinorius Vilnius University Historiam nescire hoc est semper puerum esse CICERO This special issue of Acta Orientalia Vilnensia is dedicated to the bicentenary of the commencement of Asian studies in Lithuania and particularly at Vilnius University, which was founded in 1579 and is the oldest academic institution in Lithuania. Two hundred years is a comparatively short period, but these years have a wealthy history, especially keeping in mind that Asian or Oriental studies, as it was called at the beginning of this period, was a newly emerging academic field that has grown from a purely comparative and philological approach to recently discovered non-European cultures due to of the increasing implications of colonial aims and the imperative to manage properly those subjugated Asian counties and nations. Certainly, an integral part of this interest in Asian learning was European romantic fascination with the cultural and intellectual otherness of that area. Lithuania was not excepted from this kind of intellectual involvement. The beginning of the 19th century was a politically complicated and turbulent period in Lithuanian history. After the third and last division of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, between Tsarist Russia and Prussia in 1795, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania became an eastern province of the Russian Empire and formally disappeared from the world map for a more than a century. Notwithstanding, some academic institutions, including the main one, Vilnius University, continued their activities, even though under the strict control and supervision of Russian officials.
