We only meet a few times from January thru June. 4 | August/September 2021 | SAW CREEK NEWS COMMUNITY LIVING Recreation News - From Summer to Fall Saw Creek Style by Renee Hojnowski, Program and Event Coordinator I hope everyone had a fantastic summer and took advantage of the oppor- tunities to engage in some (or all) of our fun and exciting events. The summer festivites began with Comminuty Day - where we welcomed summer with hours of music from “Who Knows”, stilt walkers, caricature artists, balloon artistry, and continued on to outdoor movie nights, a campfire night, a party at the beach, not one, but two fishing derbies and so much more. As fall approaches, we continue the excitement in early September with a “4 paws up” Doggie Dip afternoon. Bring your furry family member to the VIP pool for a few hours of pool time and entertaining doggie games. Watch as they meet new dog friends and have a cool dip in the pool. The Adult Fall Tennis Classic will follow in mid-September. Looking for new treasures or interested in selling the old? Signup for the at-home Garage Sale weekend. We offer maps to all buyers and balloon markers to all sellers. There are many treasures to be found and there is a special one out there waiting to be sold or bought. Do you like art? Would you like to design something with your own hands for your home? Sign up for our Painting in the Park at the VIP pavilion. A col- orful afternoon of painting in the outdoors with a local artist from Shawnee who will take you through every step of the way from beginning to end. October will follow September’s good times with a Food and Coat Drive and another dog training day by David Henon. Spend an afternoon of painting pumpkins, creating fall crafts, and listening to music at our Fall Festival and Pumpkin Painting Event. Our Howl-O-Ween event - which is a hauntingly good time at the VIP pond - ends this magical season. Imaginative and creative costumes walk the path of treats and scary excitement while music echoes over the pond in the cool crisp air. Movie nights will continue monthly, and our Home Craft Contests continue with a winning first place prize every month. Mark your calendar for our upcoming events and join us for some unfor- gettable moments. Special thanks to all the volunteers that help create all the memories for Saw Creek and its families. Kudos, Recreation Department! by Nancy Stuhler, Homeowner Have you ever thought, “What will I do this weekend?” Check it out. We have a dynamite Recreation Department here in Saw Creek! I am a weekender from South Jersey, between Atlantic City and Philadelphia and it’s so nice to see something going on every weekend. There are two key points I would like to make people aware of. One is that these events happen because of dedication and physical manpower. The other is that the same amount of work is required to execute an event whether there is one family, or 300 families present. This year, I have become more involved as a volunteer with the Recreation Department. I may have seen you at an event or maybe not. There is a good chance that I saw you, but you would not know it was me unless you were getting eggs from the Easter Bunny. A hint for Community Day - I was dressed in yellow with blue pants looking like a minion. My point is that there is generally no registration for most events, but the preparation, set-up, and participation work are the same regardless of how many people attend. As a volunteer, you get to meet so many new and in- teresting people. It is a rewarding feeling to know that you helped someone and made someone happy. You get a nice warm fuzzy feeling in your heart! To all my neighbors throughout Saw Creek that I have or have not met yet, why not become a bigger part of the community and interact with the activ- ities provided as a participant or a volunteer, or both? You could be missing out on some terrific FREE entertainment. What a great band on Community Day and such a cute movie, The War with Grandpa, Saturday in the VIP field on July 10th. Hopefully, you will be out for upcoming activities and walk up to someone you do not know and introduce yourself as a neighbor! We are all just friends you have not met. And along the way even more Bike Hike missions helped with funding for neighbors in need, food charities and Huntington’s Disease. It’s no coincidence the Monts chose Saw Creek Estates for their new family home. Childhood vacations at the Kirkwood Camp in Bartonsville drew them here in 2017 and they’re now full time residents. Chuck serves as Worship Pastor at Pleasant Valley Presbyterian, a community church in Brodheadsville with access online at www.PleasantValleyPresbyterian.org. Also, just outside the Kirkham Gate, The Bowery Mission’s outreach stretches from New York and Newark all the way to the Poconos with Mont Lawn Summer Camp, Retreat and Meeting Center on Wickes Road here in Bushkill. And for one more bonus, the 100 mile bike ride from Saw Creek Estates to New York City is great for Bike Hike training! Throughout his life’s journey, Chuck’s Bike Hike missions have joined youth to each other, to their communities’ needs and brighter futures. The Bowery Mission, with a tradition of rebuilding hope and lives since 1879, was a natural fit for Pastor Chuck and this year’s Bike Hike mission. The pandemic increased poverty and homelessness to historic crisis levels, one in seven lost jobs, 80,000 men women and children left homeless, and 4,000 sleeping on the streets every night. Chuck’s youth groups and Bike Hike missions through the years and across the country are joining online in virtual reunions looking backward to go forward with the same spirit of giving to neighbors in need, while taking another opportunity to look inward. All those years ago, his first Bike Hike taught Chuck the true meaning of community, rooted in accepting and giving. Everyone he met reinforced the generosity of people everywhere, the amazing feeling of freedom and the importance of asking for help with gratitude and thankfulness without guilt or shame. As an older Bike Hiker, Chuck’s goal is to strengthen his patience and sense of humor to face the new challenges of the world today with new perspectives that increase his faith in God and service to neighbor. This will be his first Bike Hike with wife Deb, an exciting quest for their partnership too! Any real adventure forces you to face your fears with the knowledge and excitement you won’t be the same person af ter ward, but better for the expe- rience. Then came Covid-19, an entirely new pandemic respiratory virus with massive transmission rates, sudden onset crises, and much higher mortality rates the first vaccines arrived to protect first responders and our most vulnerable requiring large-scale behavior change, immediate testing and prevention as with hope that, while there is no cure, prevention could stem the tide. well as adaptive treatment responses. She is always on alert to any changes in her patients and patients on six IVs, in the midst of respiratory failure, heart attacks and strokes sharing insight with her team. It is what she was trained to do. Being strong with a shortage of specialists and personal protective equipment. Airborne for others, often putting themselves last, first responders may not prioritize disease, cross contamination and fear of the unknown caused staff to join in taking time for their own recovery. And that’s her goal as she considers re- prayer circles asking for God’s protection while scientists dug into the epide- tirement next year and stepping away from the front line for the first time in miology. Call 570-365-4999 22 | August/September 2021 | SAW CREEK NEWS Men’s Club News by Bill Montgomery, Men’s Club President I hope everyone is enjoying these summer months in the Poconos and especially at Saw Creek. Finally, partial normalcy is returning - NO MASKS for vaccinated people! The Men’s Club was able to award three $1,000 schol- arships to seniors at East Stroudsburg H.S. North despite not collecting at the gates this year. We started an online fundraising program this year and thanks to all who con- tributed. The recipients were Alejandra de la Cruz, Madison Mes- sana and Dylan DeSilva. We held an informal ceremony on June 3, 2021, in the Mountain Room and want to wish them all good luck in their future endeavors. The Men’s Club participated in this year’s Community Day on June 19, 2021 and supplied drinks for the adults and children. Special surprise for the kids (bubbles) although many adults seemed to enjoy as well. Thank you, Joe, for that idea. Great job by the Recreation Department, es- pecially Renee for organizing this event even with some COVID restrictions still in place. The Men’s Club is looking forward to returning next year to our customary job of cooking and supplying hamburgers and hot dogs to our homeowners. We held our Men’s Club Annual Golf Tournament on Monday, July 19, 2021, at Pocono Hills Golf Club. The weather cooperated and we had a beautiful day. This fundraiser allows the club to donate monies to local charities and enables us to sponsor various community events.
