Here is a selection of books that celebrates man’s thought relating to the sciences. One of the most inspired was Newton. My copy of Newton’s Opticks, 1704, is traced to its original owner Dr. Charles Bernard, himself a member of the Royal Society, the book was sold at auction in 1711, reappeared in Edinburgh and bound for the university. The book was given as a student prize by Dr. Philip Kelland, also a Fellow of the Royal Society. Eventually the copy found its way to Washington [D.C.?] by 1915. Again it disappears until 1966 when it was owned by the bookseller Jake Zeitlin. There is nothing so inspiring to a collector than an important book, especially one with a history. B y the death of Sir George H oward Darwin, which took place on December 7 last, the Society has lost an investigator of rare skill and untiring patience, whose work has done much to add lustre to a name already pre-eminent in the annals of British science. Sir George, the second son of Charles Darwin, was born at Down, Kent, in the year 1845. Brought up amidst scientific surroundings from the start, he received his early education privately at the hands of Rev. Charles Pritchard, who afterwards became Savilian Professor of Astronomy in the University of Oxford. Among Pritchard’s pupils at the time were numbered the sons of many of England’s leading scientists, and many of these in turn have since won for themselves distinguished careers, no fewer than three having officiated in after years as Presidents of the British Association. He gained an entrance scholarship and entered at Trinity College, •Cambridge, in 1864, and graduated as Second Wrangler and Smith’s Prizeman in the year 1868. The same year he was elected to a Fellowship at Trinity College. The Senior Wrangler of the year was Mr. Fletcher Moulton of St. John’s (now Lord Justice of Appeal), who relates how he himself at first remained at Cambridge with the object of pursuing an academic career while Darwin proceeded to London to read with a prominent barrister with a view to adopting the bar as a profession. -

DEPARTMENT OF ASTROPHYSICS INTRODUCTION The University Observatory, also known as the Department of Astronomy, was designed by architect Charles Barry. Located in the University Parks, it was built in 1873-5 to house a school of astronomical physics, the main focus of which would be research. Howard Grubb, astronomical instrument maker, was commissioned by the University to build a 12.25 inch equatorial refracting telescope for the Observatory and Warren De La Rue, a wealthy amateur astronomer, donated a reflecting telescope. A lecture theatre was added to the Observatory in 1877-8. Although Oxford was already home to the Radcliffe Observatory, built in the 1770s and owned by the Radcliffe Trustees, the University Observatory was the University’s first own Observatory. Its conception reflected the growing prominence of physics and the sciences more generally at the University; the Clarendon Laboratory had been constructed in 1868 and in 1870 Preliminary Honour Examinations had been introduced in Mechanics and Physics. The construction of the University Observatory was overseen by the Savilian Professor of Astronomy, Charles Pritchard, who, along with John Phillips, the Keeper of the University Museum until 1874, helped to ensure that the proposal for a new observatory passed through Convocation. Holders of the Savilian Professorship, founded in 1619 by an endowment by Sir Henry Savile and attached to a fellowship at New College from 1877, were in charge of the University Observatory. At that time the Professor was elected by a board consisting of the Chancellor of the University, the President of the Royal Society, the Astronomer Royal, the Radcliffe Observer, the Warden of New College, an individual nominated by the Warden and Fellows of New College and another nominated by Hebdomadal Council. -

ASTRONOMISCHE NACHRICHTEN. NP 3171. Band 133. 3. Rev. Charles Pritchard, D. D., F. R. S. I regret to have to inform you of the death of the Rev. Charles Pritchard, Savilian Professor of Astronomy and Director of the Oxford University Observatory. The deceased Professor was in the 8sth year of his age, and to within the last few days was able to take an active part in the conduct of the Observatory and in the duties connected with his chair. It was not till Professor Pritchcnrd was considerably advanced in life, that he began to take an active share in astronomical research or to give signs of that energy and zeal which characterized his later years. In 1866, he was made President of the Astronomical Society, and this seems to have been the turning point of his career, for shortiy after, he was appointed Savilian Professor of Astronomy, in succession to Prof. Donkin, and then began that energetic conduct of the University Observatory with which your readers are familiar. It may be as well to recall that at that date (1870) the Yniversity of Oxford pos- sessed no observatory and no instrumental equipment. it may not be unnecessary to remind your readers, that the control of the Radcliffe Observatory and its connection with the SaviliaD chair of Astronomy had ceased many years previously, and from the time of the appointment of Mr. Johnson to the duties of the Radcliffe Observer, the University had remained without any adequate means of educating its students in astronomy or of conducting any series of observations. -

Fifteen years ago Hunter Dupree announced to the American His torical Association that the field of the History of American Science had "found itself." It had done so, he claimed, because historians, following the advice of Arthur Schlesinger, Sr., had recognized the central role of science in recent American history and had refused to let their ignorance of science prevent them from writing about it. Rejecting the demand of George Sarton (founder of the history of science discipline in the United States) that they should be "deeply familiar with at least one branch of today's science" and "should have a more superficial acquain tance with various other branches," Dupree and his colleagues decided that they could dispense with such scientific training and perhaps did not even need to have an interest in the subject matter of science at all; their subject was the scientists and their relation to society.1 One consequence of this attitude was Dupree's conclusion that his torians of "American science" need not worry about whether the contri butions of American scientists were of any importance to science itself, as judged by scientists in other countries; "since science has meant much to American civilization, the indebtedness would not change if a water tight proof were made that American civilization had been woefully inept or even a complete failure in its contributions to science."2 Thus 41 American science is to be studied because of its role in American society; the European reputation of an American scientist does him no good at home (unless he can convert it into the cash and prestige that goes with a Nobel Prize).
