Prayers for Your Oikos #1 Who are my “oikos”? “When He saw the crowds, He had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. “ Mathew 9:36 Dear God, in the upcoming months, our CCCM congregation will come together in one heart and mind to be your witnesses among our “Oikos”. I asked that you will grant us the compassion and loving heart of Jesus Christ, so that we can see what Jesus see, feel what Jesus feel. Help us to be sensitive as to whom you have placed on the “front burner” of our lives. Help us support each other’s effort in bringing our Oikos to Christ. Lord, please reveal in my heart those you have planned to be my “oikos”. I pray that you will help me to become an ideal instrument of your grace. Soften my heart and give me the desire and urgency to make the investment required to bring them to Christ. # 2 Pray! Pray! Pray! “As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. “ Exodus 17:11 Dear Heavenly Father, I pray that you would make me a prayer warrior like Moses. • Is Believing in Christ Enough? Q & a About Salvation & Works How Do
Is Believing in Christ Enough? Q & A about Salvation & Works WHAT IS THE PROPER RESPONSE TO THE GOSPEL? Question from June 24, 2012 message: We base most everything on John 3:16 and call people to believe. But today's message seems to take that all away. How are any of us to know if we “hate” our families enough, or “love” Jesus just enough? Are we forgiven and accepted by Christ dying or not? We lead new believers to think that is enough when there is clearly so much more. How is anyone to know for sure they are going to heaven? Your sermon was great, and people need to know this, but it creates a hole in one's heart. It creates doubt. How can anyone ever measure up? How do we ever have peace? When I read what Jesus says I find it hard to believe that anyone can ever reach this heavenly goal. Thanks for putting it out there. ANSWER FROM PASTOR TONY These are very good questions, and I appreciate your heart and struggle. You need to remember that all sermons that I preach have a context. This Sunday's sermon had the context of confronting easy believism and casual, cultural Christianity. So my emphasis was more on a person's commitment rather than Christ’s work on the cross. There are other messages that I have preached that emphasize the grace of God and not falling into legalism. I did a message the Sunday following Easter, April 15, 2012, where I emphasized the grace of Christ in a person's relationship.

Studio Mertoniana 212003 WAC LAW HRYN!EWICZ T HOMAS MERTON AND JULIAN OF NORWICH: MYSTICISM AND UNNERSALISM OF SALVATION* Great culture of the spirit is shaped by people who are open, capable of understanding and compassionate for others. Mystics belong to this cate gory. They can cross over any religious and confessional divisions. A my stic is far from being a bitter recluse, devoid of the sense ofhuman solidarity. Quite the opposite, his spi1i tual expe1i ence allows him to find the deepest bonds between people. He is able to discover that beauty, which is a herald of their ultimate rescue and transformation. Those who read the mystics' witness thoroughly will find in it a rejection of all fundamental isms or nar rowness of spirit. They will discover mercy and compassion encompassing all people and all creatures. In this witness there is great wisdom of the view of the world and the human lot, wisdom releasing from exclusivism and overconfidence in one self This wisdom is born out ofa deep experience ofcommuni ty and solida rity among people. Thus the mystic's witness is enonnously edifying. Tho mas Me1ton and Julian ofN01wich have helped me to reach deeper into the wisdom of hope for the salvation of all. · Transl. by A. • Concept of Salvation in Hinduism
HINDUISM AND CONCEPT OF SALVATION {With special reference to The Bhagavad Gita} Tahira Basharat∗ The concept of salvation is present in almost all religions in its own distinct way. The primary purpose of all religions is to provide salvation to their followers and the existence of many different religions indicates that there is a great variety of opinion about what constitutes salvation and the means of achieving it. The term salvation can be meaningfully used in connection with so many religions, however, shows that it distinguishes a notion common to men and women of a wide range of cultural traditions. The monotheistic religions state that barrier between human and God is a sin. The monotheistic religions define salvation as entering a state of eternal communion with God, which means that personhood will not be abolished but perfected. However, they differ greatly on the way one can be saved and on the role Jesus Christ has in it. According to Judaism and Islam, salvation is attained by performing good deeds and following the moral law. According to Christianity this is not enough and the role of Jesus Christ as Savior is essential. Other Eastern religions, such as Buddhism and Taoism, take salvation as an illumination, meaning the discovery of and conformity of oneself with an eternal law that governs existence. Dualistic religions, which state that two opposed forces of good and evil rule our world, see salvation as a return to an initial angelic state, from which humans have fallen into a physical body. Salvation, for the Hindu, can be achieved in one of three ways: the way of works, the way of knowledge, or the way of devotion.

They come from two separate Christian traditions: Catholicism and Lutheranism. The concept of salva- tion is so crucial that it is the essence of understanding Christianity and, if recognized as the goal of every human life, the effort of understanding it becomes even more impor- tant. An insight into the notion of salvation, based on the indication of similarities and differences in its understanding, makes it more comprehensible and accessible to every Christian. Keywords John Paul II, Paul Tillich, salvation of man, ecumenism, Luteranism. 1. The concept of salvation In Greek religion, hope and the concept of salvation were closely related to the philosophy of man, who was perceived with acute dualism: man consists of soul and body. In its essence and because of being intangible, the soul is divine, whereas the body, as a material medium, is a prison for the soul. Therefore, the idea of salvation in ancient philosophical and religious systems took the The Person and the Challenges 30 Volume 8 (2018) Number 2, p. 29–55 form of longing for the salvation of the human soul from the bonds of the material body and the visible world.

It is one thing to stand for the truth in the face of the world’s religions, but quite another to stand for the truth against those one considers to be fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. May we all hold fast to the Word of God as given in Scripture and reject syncretizing with the world’s wisdom, which can only lead to the destruction of our souls.

  • Salvation of the Soul Saving of the Life
Salvation of the Soul Saving of the Life A Study about the Salvation to Be Revealed at the Time of Christ’s Return Arlen L. Chitwood The expression, “salvation of the soul,” has been misused in Christian circles over the years to the extent that any correct Scriptural teaching on the subject has become almost nonexistent. Soul-winning has erroneously been equated with reaching the unsaved with the mes- sage of the gospel of grace; and few Christians, viewing soul-winning in this manner, seem to even give the matter a second thought. Books have been written on soul-winning, Bible colleges and seminaries teach courses on soul-winning, and soul-winning confer- ences are held by these same institutions and by various Churches. But, among these groups, almost without exception, soul-winning is viewed from a non-Scriptural perspective. Soul-winning in Scripture has to do with the saving of the soul/life of those who are already saved, whether Israelites in the Old Testa- ment or Christians in the New Testament. When it comes to the saving or the losing of the soul/life in this respect, solely from a Scriptural standpoint, the unsaved are NOT in view. But exactly what is soul-winning? And why is there so much confusion on this subject today? The questions are interrelated, and Scripture is quite clear concerning the answers to both. Soul-winning, having to do with those who are already saved, is seen connected with a kingdom in both Testaments. In the Old Tes- tament, this kingdom was an existing kingdom (the O.T.

  • Cults and Cosmic Consciousness: Religious Vision in the American 1960S
Cults and Cosmic Consciousness: Religious Vision in the American 1960s CAMILLE PAGLIA 1. eclipse by politics Commentary on the 1960s has been mas- sive. Law and politics in that turbulent decade are well doc- umented but remain controversial, and the same thing can be said of contemporary innovations in mass media and the arts. One major area remains ambiguous or poorly assimi- lated, however—the new religious vision, which for a tanta- lizing moment in the American sixties brought East and West together in a progressive cultural synthesis. Its promise was never completely fulfilled, for reasons I will try to sketch here. But the depth and authenticity of that spiritual shift need to be more widely acknowledged. A political model currently governs interpretations of the sixties because of the enduring reform movements born in that period, including environmentalism, feminism, and gay liberation. Their mobilizing energy, as well as the organiza- tional style that would also be adopted by antiwar protests, initially came from the civil rights movement sparked by the us Supreme Court’s 1954 decision declaring segregation in public schools unconstitutional. In that crusade, it must be remembered, ordained Protestant ministers such as Martin Luther King, Jr., played a leading role, as they also had in nineteenth-century abolitionism. The civil rights movement, with its hymns and anthems, appealed not just to secular standards of social justice but to a higher moral code. An expanded version of a lecture delivered on 26 March 2002 at Yale University, sponsored by the Institute for the Advanced Study of Religion at Yale.

  • The Salvation of the Soul
The Salvation of the Soul WATCHMAN NEE Christian Fellowship Publishers, Inc. New York Copyright ©1978 Christian Fellowship Publishers, Inc. New York All Rights Reserved ISBN 0-935008-31-4 Available from the Publishers at: 11515 Allecingie Parkway Richmond, Virginia 23235 PRINTED IN U.S.A. TRANSLATOR’S PREFACE The subject before the readers of these pages is one which is commonly overlooked by God’s people. Yet we are definitely told by the Lord this word: “A salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls” (1 Peter 1.5,9). As the end draws nearer and nearer, it is incumbent upon Christians to know what the salvation of the soul is. In Part I of this latest volume of the author’s to appear, Watchman Nee presents to us the meaning, the means, and the manifestation of the soul’s salvation: the meaning is self-denial, the means is the cross, and the manifestation is the kingdom. And in Part II he approaches the same subject still further but from a different perspective by showing the sphere of the believer’s salvation, the secret of a victorious life, and the faith by which such life is lived. This book is offered as a companion volume to another work of Mr. Nee’s, The Latent Power of the Soul,* and serves as an answer to the problem discussed in that work of the inordinate power hidden deep within man’s soul. Because this latest volume reveals to us God’s positive way with our soul, it is hoped that the reader may gain from its pages a greater appreciation for the dimensions of God’s salvation so graciously given to man.

  • THE IDEA of SALVATION in CONTEMPORARY WORLD RELIGIONS Tokunboh Adeyemo
THE IDEA OF SALVATION IN CONTEMPORARY WORLD RELIGIONS Tokunboh Adeyemo In one form or another, nearly all the world's religions and ideologies promise their adherents some form of peace - some way of deliverance from the precarious plight humanity is in. Hinduism and Buddhism promise nirvana, a blessedness through extinction of individuality and desires. In African Traditional Religion, a worshipper believes that through divina tion and prescribed sacrifices he can be delivered from his enemies, real and· potential, secure the help of his ancestors and the gods and be prosperous in life. Islam strongly advocates submission to Allah as the pathway to peace. And modern humanism looks forward to a society freed from all forms of violence - social, cultural, economic or political. All these goals can be referred to as 'salvation'. Are they all- equally valid? If so, how do all these ways of being saved fit alongside Jesus' words: 'I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man comes to the Father, but by me'? Or Peter's declaration: 'There is no other name (besides Jesus Christ) under heaven given to men by which we must be saved'? There is an important sense in which it can be said that the doctrine of salvation forms the theological watershed between Judea-Christian faith and all other faiths and ideologies. Even within Christendom as Carl Braaten argued, 'the whole of theology is inherently developed from a soteriolog ical point of view. Salvation is not one of the many topics, along with the doctrine of God, Christ, church, sacraments, eschatology, and the like.
