This book makes a unique contribution to the field of me- dia studies by analyzing the perpetuation of sexual scripts through news articles, films, TV shows, lifestyle magazines, advertisements, and other forms of popular mediated culture. Focusing on cultural differences between North America and Europe, the book catalogues and contextualizes common sex- ual scripts by looking at the ways in which people have or do | Eros Mediated not have sex, eroticize each other’s bodies, penetrate each other’s bodies, and give meaning to all these activities. Other such analyses have explored whether, when, and why people decide to have sex, and so on. This book instead fo- cuses on how the sexual interaction itself is culturally script- ed to occur—what sequence of events takes place after a couple have decided to have sex. While the first half of the book catalogues sexual scripts in a general way, based on geography and sexual orientation, the second half is framed around sexual discourses associated with some degree of shame and social stigmatization. The book ends by addressing the hegemonic perpetuation of me- diated sexual scripts across cultures and the role of sexuality in fourth-wave feminism. Sternadori Mediated Eros is suitable as the primary or secondary text in seminars on media, culture, and sexuality, and would also be of interest to journalists and freelance writers whose work explores the sociocultural construction of sex and the sexual self. MIGLENA M. STERNADORI (Ph.D., University of Missouri) is an asso- ciate professor in the Department of Journalism and Electronic Media at Texas Tech University.

  • 8 Rules for Creating a Successful Transmedia "Storyworld"
8 Rules for Creating a Successful Transmedia "Storyworld" 03.25.2014 Once upon a time, life for entertainment marketers was simple: producers created a new show, and the marketing team developed a campaign to promote it and attract an audience. But with rapidly increasing competition for viewers, growing smartphone and tablet penetration, and the emergence of new platforms, marketing and creative teams are increasingly playing an important role in developing "storyworlds," experiences that bridge the gap between marketing and content and lay out the mythology, characters, setting, backstories, and events that drive a show. Red Bee Media's Andy Bryant laid out his eight rules for creating a successful transmedia storyworld at the 2014 PromaxBDA Europe Conference in London. Rule 1: Start Building Early "As the battle for viewers' attention becomes more and more intense, we're seeing marketing teams start to build their storyworlds earlier and earlier ahead of launches," Bryant said. A classic example he pointed to was HBO's "Game of Thrones," which began building anticipation for the premiere way back in 2011 by sending scents, scrolls and potions to influential writers, while staging "GoT"-themed food truck events in New York City and Los Angeles. SyFy's "Defiance" also got a jump start on their storyworld, launching a total takeover of Comic-Con nine months ahead of the premiere, and developing a cultural map that plotted major cultural events such as awards shows and allowed the "Defiance" team to plan their launch with "military precision." "Marketers are moving from a traditional campaign model to a semi-publishing model," Bryant said.

Often, female journalists are portrayed as vivacious, ruthless, and driven individuals who must compete fiercely to survive in a man’s profession. Robin Scherbatsky (played by Cobie Smulders) of How I Met Your Mother is depicted as an attractive Canadian journalist with a tomboy past on the highly popular television series. Scherbatsky struggles to break free from covering stereotypical “fluff” stories, a genre that is common to female broadcast journalists. While she maintains a rugged and unemotional facade, she is still very womanly and vulnerable in both her career and personal life. This study will examine Scherbatsky’s dichotomous character, compare her image on the series to that of other female journalists in popular culture, and analyze her influence on the current stereotype of female broadcasters.
