  • THE EXCAVATIONS UNDER SAINT PETER's 295 Moment to Their Readers; for the Excavations Can Never Be Thrown Open to the General Public
THE EXCAVATIONS UNDER SAINT PETERS EDGAR R. SMOTHERS, SJ. West Baden College E HAVE at last a work in English on the excavations under St. WPeter's, which were commanded in 1939 by Pius XII, and pub lished by the archaeologists immediately concerned in their Esplora- zioni sotto la Confessione di San Pietro in Vaticano (1951).1 Apart from this monumental report, from which serious authors must always draw, our new one, The Shrine of St. Peter and the Vatican Excava tions, by Jocelyn Toynbee and John Ward Perkins, is the fullest and best account we have in any language.2 Some of their opinions are open to discussion; further information on certain points, it may be ex pected, will be forthcoming; but, just as it is, their work is so sound and so thorough as to deserve the highest praise. Before we enter into detail, let us define the question with which we shall be especially concerned, and our approach to it. What is the historical significance of the discoveries, pagan and Christian, at the site of the reputed burial place of the Prince of the Apostles? Theo logians need not be told that no doctrine of divine faith could depend upon the unpredictable findings of the spade. It is highly satisfying to have this point clearly stated by the Holy Father: "As regards the Apostle Peter and his place in the Church of Christ, while the proof from monuments of the sojourn and death of Peter in Rome is not of essential importance for the Catholic faith, nevertheless We caused the well-known excavations to be made under the basilica."8 The archaeological evidence ought, therefore, to be interpreted according to sound archaeological principles and without embarrassment.

ANTIMATTER EXPLOSIONS Left half of the Sistine Chapel's ceiling, after its most-recent restoration (1980-1994). Looking up, inside a rather nondescript building in Vatican City where new Popes are elected - watch the video link to see how that occurs - we see the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, an artistic marvel. Looking down, in a not- so-distant place, we see the Vatican Scavi - a city of the dead. What do these places signify? Every year, millions of people view the Sistine Chapel. Because of its popularity, and sheer size, the chapel is often called the world’s most famous work of art, created by some of the world’s best artists. But here’s a question about the ceiling, which Michelangelo painted. Aside from its beauty, what does the ceiling mean? Are the complex pictorial codes (which Michelangelo designed) and the beautiful iconography (which he painted) telling us something? Or ... is the whole creation, with its row-upon-row of pictures, simply a beautiful piece of work? And ... what are we to make of Michelangelo’s beginning and ending scenes - The Creation of Adam and The Last Judgment? What do those works tell us about Michelangelo’s conception of God? Is this his answer to the Biblical question: “What is man, that You are mindful of him?” Pope Julius II took a keen interest in the Sistine’s paintings.

European Journal of Science and Theology, April 2018, Vol.14, No.2, 131-140 _______________________________________________________________________ CONSERVATION PROBLEMS IN THE VATICAN NECROPOLIS Daniela Gallo1*, Pietro Zander2 and Claudia Pelosi3 1 University of Tuscia, Department of linguistic and literary, historical, philosophical and legal studies (DISTU), Largo dell’Università, 01100 Viterbo, Italy 2 Fabbrica di San Pietro, Vatican City 3 University of Tuscia, Department of Economics, Engineering, Society and Business Organization, Largo dell’Università, 01100, Viterbo, Italy (Received 25 September 2017, revised 20 October 2017) Abstract The Vatican Necropolis represents one of the most surprising sites during a visit to the monumental complex of Saint Peter’s Basilica. This case study is an important example of conservative challenges in hypogeum environment where a lot of degradation phenomena affect materials and structures. For this reason, various professionals were called to intervene and to work in a spirit of positive and reciprocal collaboration for guaranteeing the preservation and fruition of both religious and archaeological areas on short and long term without causing further damages. It was possible to begin the delicate restoration according to a plan that, for the first time, considered the necropolis in its entirety. Each individual solution adopted for the rehabilitation of the necropolis was carefully evaluated on the basis of the needs expressed by different specialists, placing every intervention organically within the master plan. Keywords: hypogeum, conservation issues, procedures, storage, microclimate 1. Introduction The Vatican Necropolis is located under the level of the Crypt of Saint Peter, underneath the central aisle of the homonymous Basilica [1, 2]. Indeed, it has been recognized like a site doubly underground [2, 3].

  • Saint Peter's Bones: a History of His Findings
Saint Peter’s Bones: A History of His Findings The purpose of this short research article is to bring to light a fact that very few people know: that the supposed bones of St. Peter that lie at the bottom of St. Peter’s basilica were found as a result of Pope Pius XII purposefully and secretly organizing an excavation below the church during the difficult and dangerous years of World War II. It is also the intention of this article to emphasize the antagonistic forces inside the Vatican surrounding this amazing finding, as well as to describe the long and controversial process of finding and identifying the bones of the apostle on which the Catholic Church is founded. I learned about this topic reading John O'Neill's The Fisherman's Tomb. The True Story of the Vatican's Secret Search (2018), and Thomas J. Craughwell's book St. Peter's Bones, which I recommend. Craughwell explains that, "in 1940, Pope Pius XII authorized a thorough reconstruction of the Vatican Grottoes, the undercroft of the Basilica of St. Peter" (1). Then, in January 1941, workmen uncovered an elegant mausoleum that had belonged to the Cetenni famil that would later be dated between AD 130 and 170. Archeologists were called, and they declared an important discovery. On their recommendation, Pius XII allowed a full-scale excavation of the area (1). To supervise the project, the pope created a commission and assigned to it a group of experts and a team of "sampietrini" (expert crafters responsible for the maintenance of St.
