TO MY WIFE LOIS Prologue For years I had wondered what the last day would be like. In January 1976 after two decades in the top echelons of the British Security Service, MI5, it was time to rejoin the real world. I emerged for the final time from Euston Road tube station. The winter sun shone brightly as I made my way down Gower Street toward Trafalgar Square. Fifty yards on I turned into the unmarked entrance to an anonymous office block. Tucked between an art college and a hospital stood the unlikely headquarters of British Counterespionage. I showed my pass to the policeman standing discreetly in the reception alcove and took one of the specially programmed lifts which carry senior officers to the sixth-floor inner sanctum. I walked silently down the corridor to my room next to the Director-General's suite. The offices were quiet. Far below I could hear the rumble of tube trains carrying commuters to the West End. I unlocked my door. In front of me stood the essential tools of the intelligence officer’s trade - a desk, two telephones, one scrambled for outside calls, and to one side a large green metal safe with an oversized combination lock on the front.

  • 'Rebels Take Control of Oxford Circus'
'Rebels take control of Oxford Circus'. 18 April 2019 Extinction Rebellion Global rapid rise not just to fame but also the attention of the world is something to be noted. Never before has a environmental protest group seen so much quick popularity and success. It is fair to say by now the police in this country probably view Extinction Rebellion as a expensive nuisance. After all, when you grid lock up large parts of London, glue yourself to underground trains, you’re not going to be very popular with the commuters that use them. Having said that Extinction Rebellion succeed in bringing large parts of London to a permeant halt. They did inconvenience the police, they did trigger the largest spate of mass arrests in one place, and they did park a pink boat in Oxford Circus for a week and shut everything down. The Police did make arrests and did remove demonstrators, but not with the normal effect at pervious protest. Watching a Policeman nicely ask a demonstrator to move on lasted forty minutes, then finally when it came to making a arrest most often the protesters were carried away to a police van. But as fast as one protester leaves another protester takes their place and so begins again the long-winded process of attempting to remove the demonstrators from their area they are occupying. This slow means of removing demonstrators proved to work in favour of the protesters. By the end of the day I was there at Oxford Circus the Police and made very little progress and the Extinction Rebellion Protesters were still there glued to their pink boat.

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Apollo British Domestic Security Policy and Communist Subversion: 1945-1964 William Styles Corpus Christi College, University of Cambridge September 2016 This dissertation is submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy William Styles British Domestic Security Policy and Communist Subversion: 1945-1964 This thesis is concerned with an analysis of British governmental attitudes and responses to communism in the United Kingdom during the early years of the Cold War, from the election of the Attlee government in July 1945 up until the election of the Wilson government in October 1964. Until recently the topic has been difficult to assess accurately, due to the scarcity of available original source material. However, as a result of multiple declassifications of both Cabinet Office and Security Service files over the past five years it is now possible to analyse the subject in greater depth and detail than had been previously feasible. The work is predominantly concerned with four key areas: firstly, why domestic communism continued to be viewed as a significant threat by successive governments – even despite both the ideology’s relatively limited popular support amongst the general public and Whitehall’s realisation that the Communist Party of Great Britain presented little by way of a direct challenge to British political stability. Secondly, how Whitehall’s understanding of the nature and severity of the threat posed by British communism developed between the late 1940s and early ‘60s, from a problem considered mainly of importance only to civil service security practices to one which directly impacted upon the conduct of educational policy and labour relations.

1 Palimpsest World: The Serpentine Trail of Roy Frankhouser from the SWP, the KKK, and the “Knights of Malta” to Far Beyond the Grassy Knoll1 Introduction In the summer of 1987 the National Caucus of Labor Committees (NCLC) submitted a document in a legal action that attempted to prove that Roy Frankhouser, a well-known KKK member and Lyndon LaRouche‘s longtime paid ―security consultant,‖ was highly connected inside the CIA. The document, ―Attachment 2,‖ began: During 1974-75, Roy Frankhauser [sic], claiming to be working on behalf of the CIA, established contact with the NCLC. In approximately June 1975, Frankhauser submitted to three days of intensive debriefings, during which time he provided details of his employment with the National Security Council on a special assignment to penetrate a Canada-based cell of the Palestinian terrorist Black September organization, and other aspects of his CIA career dating back to his involvement in the Bay of Pigs.2 Frankhauser said he served as the ―babysitter‖ for [Mario] Garcia- Kholy [sic], one of the Brigade leaders who was to have a high government post in a post-Castro Cuba.3 Subsequently, NCLC researchers found a brief reference in PRAVDA citing a 1962 expulsion of one ―R. Frankhauser‖ from a low-level post at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow on charges that he was spying.4 The NCLC reference to a ―R. Frankhauser‖ being in Moscow in 1962 as somehow relevant evidence that Roy E. Frankhouser was working for the CIA suggests just how much we have entered the Mad Hatter‘s World.

A number of reasons for this - the summer holidays, a typewriter breakdown - but mainly (a) just a lot of pressure from other areas, and (b) an enormous mountain of copy to be handled. In effect Nos 6 and 7 have been typed simultaneously. We should be back on schedule for No 7. No 6 marks the end of year 1. We will produce a comprehensive name/subject index for each six issues but we make no promises when we will get it out. Part of the first index has been done but it is a time-consuming chore. Of course, if there is someone out there who just adores doing indexes, we'd like to hear from you. At the end of the first year we can say that, mostly due to the cheap printing deal we get from the VOICE we are not yet in debt - but getting closer with each issue. We think the Lobster is pretty good by any standards, and for 60p per issue, is ridiculously good value.

Henze, Croom Helm, London 1984 These two books cover the same ground, more or less, and have the same thesis: the KGB used the Bulgarians, who used Agca to shoot the Pope. Sterling's is much the more impressive of them, better documented, more detailed and just generally more convincing. Henze's is thin, padded out with barely relevant material (80 pages on previous Soviet calumnies, for example). Maybe Sterling just had more time - Henze published ahead of her - and maybe, as a working journalist, she is just better at the job. For whatever reason, Henze's little book is going to get buried by Sterling's, and it is hers I will concentrate on. As with her last book, The Terror Network, much of her 'evidence' is attributed to unidentified police and intelligence officers. This bothered me less than it did with The Terror Network.

This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Taylor & Francis in Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television on 17/08/17, available online: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/01439685.2017.1331630 THIS FILM IS RESTRICTED: THE TRAINING FILMS OF THE BRITISH SECURITY SERVICE Dr Shane O’Sullivan (Kingston University) School of Performance and Screen Studies Penrhyn Road Kingston upon Thames Surrey KT1 2EE Tel: 020 8417 9000 ext: 67091 Mob: 07931 107944 email: [email protected] Abstract In 1962, following a series of spy scandals, the Security Service and the Central Office of Information (COI) created a security education campaign to raise awareness of the Soviet espionage threat to state and industrial secrets, and to provide security training for military and civilian personnel handling classified material. Several instructional films were commissioned, using fictional scenarios to dramatize the Cold War threat to security personnel. This paper will examine four of these declassified and highly inventive films – It Can’t Happen to Me (1962), Persona Non Grata (1964) and The Lecture (1968), produced by James Carr’s World Wide Pictures; and Any One of Us (1970), directed by Seafield Head for Verity Films. Drawing on COI production files at the National Archives and the films themselves, I explore the making and underlying message of these long-neglected and highly stylized pieces of Cold War propaganda; how they anticipate key texts of the sixties spy genre like The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965); and how they compare to American security education films from the same period.
