  • Ronronnements À Monaco Les Meetings De Canots Automobiles (1903-1906)

CHAPTER 5 suggested citation: Medrano-Bigas, Pau. The Forgotten Years of Bibendum. Michelin’s American Period in Milltown: Design, Illustration and Advertising by Pioneer Tire Companies (1900-1930). Doctoral dissertation. University of Barcelona, 2015 [English translation, 2018]. THE TROJAN HORSE: IMPORTED AUTOMOBILES In the last two decades of the nineteenth century, the furor for bicycles as a personal and economical means of transport led to the invasion of the French market by English and American firms—leading to fierce commercial competition with the country’s own industries—resulting in the collapse of 1898. In the early stages of the new century the full development of the European automobile industry and in particular the French sector—with the inseparable development of the tire—produced a similar effect. However, this time it was the American market that was invaded by imported European vehicles, pre- dominantly from France. 1. Transatlantic travel on wheels Between 1890 and 1891 the first French vehicles marketed by Peugeot—one of the major bicycle manu- facturers—and Panhard et Levassor, appeared on the scene and incorporated the internal combustion engine developed by the German Gottlieb Daimler. French and German investments in technology, which would be imposed on the rest, was based on gasoline-powered engines and collided with the English and North American options, diversified between vapor, electric and gas-powered automobiles. Production data from the United States in 1899 show that there were 2,500 vehicles—about 80% of which used electric or steam engines—manufactured by around 30 companies. Between 1900 and 1901, France was by far the world’s largest automobile producer.

  • Motoring and National Victories the Gordon Bennett Cup at the Beginning of the Twentieth Century
Material Modernity(ies): Europe in Expansion Motoring And National Victories The Gordon Bennett Cup at the Beginning of the Twentieth Century Mathieu FLONNEAU ABSTRACT Every year between 1900 and 1905, the greatest European nations clashed in international motoring competitions for preeminence on the road. The industrial rivalries in this economic sector, stoked by international motoring competitions, saw France, the United Kingdom, Germany and Italy emerge as the primary leaders of the motoring revolution. These cups had at their source the media attention initiated by the American James Gordon Bennett, the owner and founder of the International Herald Tribune newspaper, which covered the events. The outlines were thus redrawn for European technical modernity, as it applied to the rapidly growing phenomenon of individual motorized mobility, whose promotion was ensured by the mass-circulating press. Gordon Bennett Cup. The “Gordon Bennett Cup,” crafted by the jeweler Aucoc, is the allegorical trophy of progress. Today it decorates the wood-paneled Gordon Bennett salon, on the mezzanine level of the Automobile Club de France building, located on the Place de la Concorde in Paris. In the early twentieth century, its conquest brought the European nations together, while setting them against each other, in an annual motor race with considerable repercussions. The portrait of James Gordon Bennett, Jr. (1841-1918)—the son of the American press magnate who founded the New York Herald—goes hand in hand with the prestigious memory of this major event—the beginnings of motor racing—as also of motoring. Before settling in Paris in 1877, on the other side of the Atlantic he became the youngest commodore of the New York Yacht Club, and won the first transoceanic race in 1866.

  • Racing Events As a Tool for Tire Promotion
CHAPTER 16 suggested citation: Medrano-Bigas, Pau. The Forgotten Years of Bibendum. Michelin’s American Period in Milltown: Design, Illustration and Advertising by Pioneer Tire Companies (1900-1930). Doctoral dissertation. University of Barcelona, 2015 [English translation, 2018]. RACING EVENTS AS A TOOL FOR TIRE PROMOTION At the end of the nineteenth century technological improvements applied to bicycles made an inexpen- sive and autonomous means of land transportation accessible to everyone. It was a new way of traveling freely, without any limitations other than the physical capacity of cyclists, the state of roads and high- ways and the robustness of the machine. The numerous cycling events were also a reflection of their boom as well as the battle between different manufacturers to demonstrate the qualities of their product. The success of a cyclist in a race meant the brand of his bicycle triumphing over the rest, not only on the track but also in the commercial field, being achievements that were exploited for promotional pur- poses. The emerging motor world rapidly picked up on the bicycle’s example. 1. The (r)evolution of the tire For the first automobile manufacturers, car racing was not only the opportunity to test the limits of their vehicles’ performance, but also a primary form of promotion. Moreover, component manufacturers producing carburetors, batteries and spark plugs, shock absorbers and tires were careful to adequately equip the automobiles. Races constituted a true and uncompromising trial ground where brand com- petitors had to constantly test, evaluate and progressively incorporate improvements in technology, with the aim of not being surpassed by their rivals.
