orthwood got back to winning ways with victory over in-form Tooting & Mitcham as Nthey set about getting back amongst the Ryman League Division Two front-runners. Woods started brightly with Lawrence Holmes sending low ball across the face of the goal and Rene Street heading over, but also survived a scare at the other end when Lee Carroll’s mishit clearance fell at the feet of Conrad Kane, whose 30-yard effort sailed over the unguarded goal. Northwood continued to threaten, Keith Boreham and Mark Barnard going close, before the former’s low shot was deflected into his own net by Gary Whelan to give the Woods the lead on 16 minutes. Chances continued to be created at both unstoppable ends, Carroll saving well from Kane and Boreham shot from the edge of the box. Chelsea fielded a development team which featured a number of youth internationals and would provide a stern test for a Northwood squad in the early stages of their pre- season preparations under new manager Dean Barker. Woods warmed to their task and opened the scoring on 11 minutes as Miguel Matos sent over a hanging cross which was headed home by James Ewington. Chelsea looked to respond and threatened through Charlie Brown and George McEachan but Northwood goalkeeper Luke Sheldrick was on hand to deny both and protect his side’s lead. Northwood continued to ask questions in an impressive first-half display and Ewington went close to increasing the lead but was unable to lift the ball over the advancing Karlo Ziger in the Chelsea goal. And Ben Pattie was the next to go close as his low shot flew narrowly wide of the target. Woods’ rearguard, well marshalled by captain Carl Pearce, was coping comfortably with what the visitors had to offer and Sheldrick continued to enjoy a fine afternoon on his Northwood debut as he saved bravely at the feet of Brown. Chelsea made a number of changes during the half-time break and they were soon on the offensive after the resumption as Sheldrick turned Jacob Maddox’s shot round the post before the Australian stopper produced another fine save to deny Daishawn Redan. Northwood proceeded to make a number of substitutions as Barker sought to give his whole squad a run out and the changes coupled with the stifling heat slightly interrupted the flow of their play. PHOTOS: JAMES BROWN REPORT: ROBIN PIPER MATCH REPORT he Woods stepped up their pre-season Tpreparations as they pitted themselves against fellow step 4 opponents for the first time. Woods were quickly into their stride with Callum Ferguson rattling the woodwork with a 25 yard effort before James Ewington intercepted an attempted back-pass but the angle was too tight as he shot into the side-netting. And it was no surprise as Northwood took the lead on nine minutes when Ben Pattie latched onto Emmanuel Melford-Rowe’s floated ball into the box to calmly rolling the ball past keeper Paul Varnica for his seventh pre-season goal. However, the lead lasted less than a minute as the Ducks punished some slack defending with Gary Jones heading home the equaliser. Woods continued to carry an attacking threat with Pattie trying his luck with a couple of long range efforts while Melford- Rowe dragged his shot wide following a strong run the United box. At the other end, Coalan Doyle had to deal with a shot from Harry Jones while Aaron Berry might have done better after being afforded a free header. The play proceeded to flow from end to end for the remainder of an entertaining opening period; Pattie, Ben Andreos and Jerome Slew having opportunities for the hosts while Doyle was on hand to deny Harry Jones. Having finished the opening period on the front foot, Woods would have been hoping to kick on after the restart. However, three minutes into the second half, Woods’ defence allowed Jamie Keen time and space to pick his spot and put the Ducks ahead. Northwood proceeded to create a plethora of chances as they looked to get back into the game with Pattie, Ewington and Andreos all going close. THE NEW SEASON There was a certain relief walking out of NLP Towers at 9:30pm last Saturday night. Another summer had been negotiated, August is here and competitive football is finally back. The off-season is a busy one for us as we aim to keep producing engaging articles people will enjoy reading and, I hope, we have once again managed to do that. While there might not be a full programme of matches for a few weeks, there’s always something going on in Non-League football once the regular season finishes at the end of April. The play-offs get into full swing immediately, then there’s all the finals to cover, restructuring, league constitutions, league constitutions part two, transfers, fixtures, FA Cup, Trophy and Vase draws and, eventually, pre-season matches. But there’s nothing quite like that first Saturday of the new campaign. Where everyone turns up, level on points, full of hope and ambition, with fans wondering, ‘Could this be our year?’ New players have been signed, stands have had a lick of paint and there’s grass in all the goalmouths – although this year much of it will be parched! I imagine there will be some expensive water bills dropping on the doormats of clubs in the near future as groundsmen battle against the heat. Of course, we’ve had the World Cup to tick us over too and with England going deep into the competition, the excitement and feel-good factor has been palpable. Non-League football can really benefit from the national side having a good competition too. And there was plenty to be proud of for this level of the game with Jordan Pickford’s loan spells at Darlington and Alfreton taking up many column inches, along with Nick Pope’s Bury Town beginning and the well-told tale of Jamie Vardy. Who knows where Tue 10 Jul Burnham (F) Away W 4-0 Pattie, Munday, Ewington, Akinola the players kicking off over the Sat 14 Jul CHELSEA XI (PBMT) HOME W 1-0 Ewington coming weeks will end up in a few Tue 17 Jul Sun Sports (F) Away W 4-0 Melford-Rowe, Andreos 2, Anum years’ time. 30 Northwood v Tooting & Mitcham United | Saturday 11th August 2018 SIN BINS Could we see the use of Sin Bins throughout the Non-League Pyramid in the future? Last season the FA trialled the punishment across 31 leagues at various levels and this year that will be expanded with the plan for every Step 7 and below league to use them from 2019-20. The FA chose to use sin bins solely for dissent. Did you know that one in four yellow cards is given for that offence? And last season’s Pilot showed a significant reduction of 38 per cent. It seems to be tackling the problem. The hope is sin bins will change behaviour because it will have an immediate impact. Backchat will see a player spend 10 minutes on the sidelines (eight minutes for games of 80 minutes or less) and will harm the team straightaway, rather than receive a booking and carry on. The FA’s Head of Judicial Services, Mark Ives, answered questions on the system as part of our monthly NLP column with the governing body. He explained how the FA are governed by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) when it comes to laws of the game. At the moment, they are only allowed to introduce it at the grass-roots level. But should that change, I wonder if we’ll see it higher up the ladder. If it works, which it seems to, that can only be a good thing. PRE-SEASON 2018
