Thursday, February 1, 2018 Black History Month 2018 Featured Exhibit & Speaker The ’68 Exhibit 10am-3pm University Center 217

Speaker - Khalid el-Hakim, FSU alumnus, Founder and Curator of the “Black History 101 Mobile Museum” 11am-11:50am University Center 217

About the '68 Exhibit: The newest exhibit titled ’68, from the award-winning archive of the Black History 101 Mobile Museum, features over 150 original artifacts of memorabilia that is focused on the major events and personalities on the 50th anniversary year of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. In addition to MLK memorabilia (including a document signed by him), there is material featuring John Carlos and Tommie Smith ('68 Olympics), Aretha Franklin, James Brown, The Jackson 5, Sly and the Family Stone, Jimi Hendrix, Arthur Ashe, , The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad, Shirley Chisholm, , The Black Panthers, and many others. The historical context of the exhibit leads up to '68 with rare material from the Trans-Atlantic slave trade and the Jim Crow era.

Khalid el-Hakim is the founder and curator of the Black History 101 Mobile Museum, a collection of over 7,000 original artifacts of Black memorabilia dating from the Trans-Atlantic slave trade era to hip-hop culture. Khalid has been called the "Schomburg of the Hip-Hop generation" because of his passionate commitment to carry on the rich tradition of the Black Museum Movement.

Tuesday, February 6, 2018 Film “Something from Nothing: The Art of Rap” (106 min) Start times: 11a.m.; 1:30 p.m. FLITE 135 Hosted by the Office of Multicultural Student Services and the FLITE Diversity Committee.

Something From Nothing: The Art Of Rap is a feature length performance documentary about the runaway juggernaut that is Rap music. At the wheel of this unstoppable beast is the film's director and interviewer Ice-T. Taking us on a deeply personal journey Ice-T uncovers how this music of the street has grown to dominate the world. Along the way Ice-T meets a whole spectrum of Hip-Hop talent, from founders, to new faces, to the global superstars like Eminem, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and . He exposes the roots and history of Rap and then, through meeting many of its most famous protagonists, studies the living mechanism of the music to reveal 'The Art of Rap'. This extraordinary film features unique performances from the entire cast, without resorting to archive material, to build a fresh and surprising take on the phenomenon that is Rap.

Tuesday, February 6, 2018 Featured Discussion “Conversations on Race: Colorism” 7pm University Center 203 Our conversation will be about prejudice and discrimination that occurs typically among people of the same ethnic or racial group, the importance of acceptance and inclusion, and discussing ways to bridge the gap.

Friday, February 9, 2018 Film “The Butler” (2h 15m) 4pm FLITE 135 Sponsored by the Ferris chapter of Phi Alpha Theta History honorary society.

The Butler is a 2013 American historical drama film directed and produced by Lee Daniels and written by Danny Strong. The film is loosely based on the real life of Eugene Allen who worked in the White House for decades, the film stars Forest Whitaker as Cecil Gaines, an African-American who is a witness of notable political and social events of the 20th century during his 34-year tenure serving as a White House butler.

Tuesday, February 13, 2018 Film & Discussion “13th” (1h 40m) 6pm OMSS Lobby FLITE 159 Sponsored by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Zeta Beta chapter.

In this thought-provoking documentary by Ava Duvernay released in 2016, scholars, activists and politicians analyze the criminalization of and the U.S. prison boom.

Tuesday, February 20, 2018 Film & Discussion “I am Not Your Negro” 6pm STARR room 235 Hosted by the FSU History Department and Phi Alpha Theta.

I Am Not Your Negro envisions the book James Baldwin never finished, a radical narration about race in America, using the writer’s original words, as read by actor Samuel L. Jackson. Alongside a flood of rich archival material, the film draws upon Baldwin’s notes on the lives and assassinations of Medgar Evers, , and Martin Luther King Jr. to explore and bring a fresh and radical perspective to the current racial narrative in America. A Discussion will take place after the film by Kimn Carlton Smith, Professor of History, Ferris State University.

Tuesday, February 27, 2018 Film “The Black Panthers – Vanguard of the Revolution” (115 min) Start times: 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. FLITE 135 Hosted by the Office of Multicultural Student Services and the FLITE Diversity Committee.

The Black Panthers – Vanguard of the Revolution is the first feature-length documentary to explore the Black Panther Party, its significance to the broader American culture, its cultural and political awakening for black people, and the painful lessons wrought when a movement derails.

Last call - Time to Pre-order Bulldog Pins!

It’s that time of year again to order Bulldog Lapel Pins. The pins can be ordered in either gold or silver and the cost is $1.00 each. We are excited to announce that they can now be ordered online. CLICK HERE to order. Just a reminder, but Bulldog Lapel Pins are only ordered once a year, so please try to anticipate what your yearly need will be for 2018 as the Alumni Office has a limited supply of extras. Pins generally arrive on campus in April and we will notify you when pick up is available. We will close the ordering on Friday, February 2, 2018.
