Objectivity, Interdisciplinary Methodology, and Shared Authority
ABSTRACT HISTORY TATE. RACHANICE CANDY PATRICE B.A. EMORY UNIVERSITY, 1987 M.P.A. GEORGIA STATE UNIVERSITY, 1990 M.A. UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN- MILWAUKEE, 1995 “OUR ART ITSELF WAS OUR ACTIVISM”: ATLANTA’S NEIGHBORHOOD ARTS CENTER, 1975-1990 Committee Chair: Richard Allen Morton. Ph.D. Dissertation dated May 2012 This cultural history study examined Atlanta’s Neighborhood Arts Center (NAC), which existed from 1975 to 1990, as an example of black cultural politics in the South. As a Black Arts Movement (BAM) institution, this regional expression has been missing from academic discussions of the period. The study investigated the multidisciplinary programming that was created to fulfill its motto of “Art for People’s Sake.” The five themes developed from the program research included: 1) the NAC represented the juxtaposition between the individual and the community, local and national; 2) the NAC reached out and extended the arts to the masses, rather than just focusing on the black middle class and white supporters; 3) the NAC was distinctive in space and location; 4) the NAC seemed to provide more opportunities for women artists than traditional BAM organizations; and 5) the NAC had a specific mission to elevate the social and political consciousness of black people. In addition to placing the Neighborhood Arts Center among the regional branches of the BAM family tree, using the programmatic findings, this research analyzed three themes found to be present in the black cultural politics of Atlanta which made for the center’s unique grassroots contributions to the movement. The themes centered on a history of politics, racial issues, and class dynamics. -
A Time to Heal: Using Art As an Aid to Trauma Recovery
Handbook of Trauma and Loss !1 A Time to Heal: Using Art as an Aid to Trauma Recovery The ultimate goal of all art is relief from suffering and the rising above it. Gustav Mahler Since the beginning of time, the arts have always been indispensable voices for both protest and solace of trauma. In every era artists — be they poets, dancers, musi- cians, sculptors, painters, cartoonists, filmmakers —have crafted in various forms or me- dia, their responses to tragic events. At the time of this writing, terrorist attacks are ram- pant all over the world. In explicit detail, television, newspapers and social media report breaking news of disasters man-made and natural. Here in Boston, we endured the marathon bombing, following the trauma connected to the national 9/11 event. (Two of the hijacked flights that slammed into the World Trade Center towers originated in Bos- ton.) In responses to such events, and as a way to help people cope with what hap- pened, spontaneously conceived art forms were offered to the public. For example, out- side their offices in downtown Boston, architects placed wooden blocks, colored markers and other art supplies on the sidewalk inviting passersby to help design and construct the block sculpture memorial evolving in the building’s lobby (Figure 1). ! ! In recent decades, US third-wave authors have arranged their own unhappy marriage in that their major publications reflect an attempt to wed poststructuralism with intersectionality theory. -

Each state‘s relative share of these programs is described. The geographic themes, patterns, and images from these programs are analyzed, with an emphasis on identity in five American regions: the Mid-Atlantic, New England, the Midwest, the South, and the West. The dissertation concludes with a comparison of television‘s senses of place to those described in previous studies of regional identity. iii For Sue iv CONTENTS List of Tables vi Acknowledgments vii 1. annual report 2006-2007 INTRODUCTION Last year, our signature Readings/Workshops program continued its nationwide expansion, made possible by our successful capital campaign in 2006, which enabled us to establish an endowment to bring the program to six new cities. In 2007, we began supporting writers participating in literary events in Washington, D.C. and in Houston. In Washington, D.C., we funded events taking place at venues, including Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind, Edmund Burke High School, and Busboys & Poets. We also partnered with Arte Publico Press, Nuestra Palabra, and Literal magazine to bring writers to audiences in Houston. In addition to the cities noted above, our Readings/Workshops program supports writers and organizations throughout New York State and California, and in Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, and Seattle. Last year, we provided $215,050 to 732 writers participating in 1,745 events. Poets & Writers Magazine celebrated its 20th anniversary last year and offered a number of helpful special sections, including a collection of articles on the increasingly popular MFA degree in creative writing. The magazine also took a look at writers conferences, including old favorites like Bread Loaf and Yaddo, as well as some newer destinations—the Macondo Workshop for Latino writers and Soul Mountain for African American writers. We also offered “The Indie Initiative,” our annual feature on small presses looking for new work, and “Big Six,” a snapshot of the country’s largest publishers of literary books. Our Information Services staff continued to provide trustworthy and personalized answers to hundreds of writers’ questions on topics ranging from vanity presses to literary agents. -

Discovering untold aspects of Sartre's private and political life, Cohen-Solal weaves together all the elements of an exceptional career.
