The syndicate that races Animal Kingdom is composed of 20 shares, so once you start adding spouses, children, relatives, and friends,man- aging the social aspect of a partner- ship can be a demanding job. Irwin said someone bought an interest be- fore the Derby at a valuation of $2- million. Homebred winner What made Animal Kingdom’s classic triumph particularly reward- ing for Irwin and Team Valor is that Animal Kingdom is a homebred, and Team Valor has not been in the breeding end of the business for long. The homebreds are the result of fillies and mares that had been raced by Team Valor and retired as broodmares. (See sidebar on Team Valor’s breeding operation.) Irwin started his entrepreneurial foray into the sport first by form- ing Pacifica in 1978, buying and selling horses, and in 1987 formed Clover Racing with newspaper handicapper Jeff Siegel, with the object of buying racehorses in training and then syndicating them and managing their careers. The partners enjoyed some high- profile success with such horses as Prized, winner of the 1989 Breeders’ Cup Turf (G1), and Political Am- bition, winner of the 1987 Holly- wood Derby (G1). Clover eventually turned into Team Valor in 1992, and in 1997, Team Valor brought to the Derby Captain Bodgit, winner of the Florida Derby (G1) and Wood Memorial Stakes (G2). “I had utter confidence in the horse,” Irwin said of Captain Bodgit. “I really did not think he would lose. I knew how good [eventual winner] Silver Charm was and I knew that when you came to him, he just didn’t quit.
