At a time when many are questioning the soundness of the American Thoroughbred, it can=t have gone unnoticed that the latest winner of the Kentucky Derby is by Leroidesanimaux, a stallion bred in Brazil, and has a dam bred in Germany, where stallions are subject to strict soundness requirements. The only American-breds in Animal Kingdom=s first three generations are Candy Stripes, his paternal grandsire who raced in France, and Dancing Brave, the British-based superstar who sired his second dam Dynamis. American-breds are also rather scarce among the 16 horses in Animal Kingdom=s fourth generation, the exceptions being Red God, Lyphard (who appears twice), Sookera and Navajo Princess. Of these, Red God started his racing career in England, while Lyphard and Sookera raced exclusively in Europe. -

MOON= CONTINUES >RISE= in REBEL
SUNDAY, MARCH 18, 2018 >MOON= CONTINUES BARRY WEISBORD: ONE LAST LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER >RISE= IN REBEL Over 30 years ago, I got involved in the daily information business. To help facilitate more trading of stallion shares and seasons on Matchmaker, we started to provide European stakes results on our closed-end computer system delivered over modems. When Matchmaker ended, we kept the slightly expanded daily information going by subscription, and delivered by a new technology--the fax machine--calling our offering Thoroughbred Daily News. I partnered first with Dick Broadbent and the weekly Thoroughbred Times, and then Peter Brant and the Thoroughbred Record. When the ACRS ended, and I was looking for my next project, I bought out Peter and shortly thereafter moved the TDN to New Jersey where Sue Finley had joined my team during ACRS and decided to stay on. It was 1993, and neither of us had much idea of our future.
