The Earliest Settlements at Eutresis Supplementary
THE EARLIESTSETTLEMENTS AT EUTRESIS SUPPLEMENTARYEXCAVATIONS, 1958 (PLATES 40-53) E UTRESIS in Boeotia, investigated by Hetty Goldman in the years 1924-1927, continues to be a principal source of our knowledge of the Bronze Age on the Greek mainland. It is a rich, well-stratified site; the excavations were conducted with skill and precision; and the definitive publication1 provides an admirably clear report of what was found. Although much of the hill was left untouched in the campaigns of the 1920's, the areas examined were sufficient to furnish reliable information about the Mycenaean and Middle Helladic settlements and about the remains of the three principal stages of Early Helladic habitations. Only the very earliest strata, lying on and just over virgin soil, proved relatively inaccessible. These were tested in six deep pits; 2 but owing to the presence of later structures, which were scrupulously respected by the excavators, the area at the bottom of the soundings was limited, amounting altogether to no more than 45 square meters. Two of the shafts revealed circular recesses cut in the hardpan, apparently the sites of huts; and the earliest deposits contained broken pottery of Neolithic types, mixed with relatively greater quantities of Early Helladic wares.3 The nature and significance of these earliest remains at Eutresis have been sub- jects of speculation during the past generation of prehistoric research. In the spring of 1958 Miss Goldman visited the site with the authors of this report and discussed the question again. It was agreed that a further test of the most ancient strata was worth undertaking, and a suitable region was noted for another deep sounding, con- siderably larger than any of the pits that had been excavated in 1927. -

Archaic Eretria
ARCHAIC ERETRIA This book presents for the first time a history of Eretria during the Archaic Era, the city’s most notable period of political importance. Keith Walker examines all the major elements of the city’s success. One of the key factors explored is Eretria’s role as a pioneer coloniser in both the Levant and the West— its early Aegean ‘island empire’ anticipates that of Athens by more than a century, and Eretrian shipping and trade was similarly widespread. We are shown how the strength of the navy conferred thalassocratic status on the city between 506 and 490 BC, and that the importance of its rowers (Eretria means ‘the rowing city’) probably explains the appearance of its democratic constitution. Walker dates this to the last decade of the sixth century; given the presence of Athenian political exiles there, this may well have provided a model for the later reforms of Kleisthenes in Athens. Eretria’s major, indeed dominant, role in the events of central Greece in the last half of the sixth century, and in the events of the Ionian Revolt to 490, is clearly demonstrated, and the tyranny of Diagoras (c. 538–509), perhaps the golden age of the city, is fully examined. Full documentation of literary, epigraphic and archaeological sources (most of which have previously been inaccessible to an English-speaking audience) is provided, creating a fascinating history and a valuable resource for the Greek historian. Eucalyptus, Israel, invasive species, native species, insect pests, natural enemies Abstract. The fi rst successful Eucalyptus stands were planted in Israel in 1884. This tree genus, particularly E. camaldulensis, now covers approximately 11,000 ha and constitutes nearly 4% of all planted ornamental trees. Here we review and discuss the information available about indigenous and invasive species of insects that develop on Eucalyptus trees in Israel and the natural enemies of specifi c exotic insects of this tree. Sixty-two phytophagous species are recorded on this tree of which approximately 60% are indigenous. The largest group are the sap feeders, including both indigenous and invasive species, which are mostly found on irrigated trees, or in wetlands. The second largest group are wood feeders, polyphagous Coleoptera that form the dominant native group, developing in dying or dead wood. Most of the seventeen parasitoids associated with the ten invasive Eucalyptus-specifi c species were introduced as biocontrol agents in classical biological control projects. None of the polyphagous species recorded on Eucalyptus pose any threat to this tree. The most noxious invasive specifi c pests, the gall wasps (Eulophidae) and bronze bug (Thaumastocoris peregrinus), are well controlled by introduced parasitoids. -

Introduction Since several thousand years ago, humans have been manufacturing linen, wool, cotton, and silk to be used as fibrous materials for clothing. In 繊維 (sen’i ), which is the word for “fiber,” the Chinese character 繊 (sen ) is a unit for decimal fractions of one ten-millionth (equal to approximately 30 Ǻ), while 維 (i) means “long and thin.” Usually, fibers are several dozen µ thick, and can range from around one centimeter long to nigh infinite length. All natural materials, with the exception of raw silk, are between several to several dozen centimeters long and are categorized as staple fibers. Most synthetic fibers are spun into filaments. Figure 1 shows how a variety of textile product forms are interrelated. Short fibers are spun into cotton (spun) yarns, whereas filaments are used just as they are, or as textured yarns by being twisted or stretched. Fabric cloths that are processed into two-dimensional forms using cotton (spun) yarns and filament yarns include woven fabrics, knit fabrics, nets, and laces. Non-woven fabrics are another type of two-dimensional form, in which staple fibers and filaments are directly processed into cloths without being twisted into yarns. Yet another two-dimensional form is that of films, which are not fiber products and are made from synthetic materials. Three-dimensional fabrics and braids are categorized as three-dimensional forms. This paper discusses spinning, or the process of making staple fibers into yarns, and winding, which prepares fibers for weaving.
