The Taxonomy of the Procellariiformes Has Been Proposed from Various Approaches

The separation of Hydrobatidae from all other taxa including Diomedeidae agrees with other precedent works. The resultsof the present study support the basic Procellariidclassification system. However, two points stillneed further study. The firstpoint is that Fulmarus diverged earlier from the Procellariidsthan did the Diomedeidae. The second point is the position of Puffinuspacificus which appears more closely related to the Pterodroma petrels than to other Puffinus species. These points are discussed. Introduction The taxonomy of the Procellariiformes has been proposed from various approaches. The earliest study by Forbes (1882) was made by appendicular myology. Godman (1906) and Loomis (1918) studied this group from a morphological point of view. The taxonomy of the Procellariiformes by functional osteology and appendicular myology was studied by Kuroda (1954, 1983) and Klemm (1969), The results of the various studies agreed in proposing four families of Procellariiformes: Diomedeidae, Procellariidae, Hydrobatidae, and Pelecanoididae. They also pointed out that the Procellariidae was a heterogenous group among them. Timmermann (1958) found the parallel evolution of mallophaga and their hosts in Procellariiformes. Recently, electrophoretical studies have been made on the Procellariiformes. Harper (1978) found different patterns of the electromorph among the families. Bar- rowclough et al. (1981) studied genetic differentiation among 12 species of Procellari- iformes at 16 loci, and discussed the genetic distances among the taxa but with no consideration of their phylogenetic relationships. -

The Save Our Shearwaters (SOS) program was created in 1979 to address this issue and to date has recovered and released to sea more than 30 500 fledglings. Although the value of the program for animal welfare is clear, as birds cannot simply be left to die, no evaluation exists to inform post-release survival. We used satellite transmitters to track 38 fledglings released by SOS and compared their survival rates (assessed by tag transmission duration) to those of 12 chicks that fledged naturally from the moun- tains of Kaua‘i. -

The avifauna of the entire park, which consistsof these two districts,is the subjectof this paper. No recentstudies have focusedintensively on the distributionand abun- dance of birds in Haleakala National Park. Dunmire (1961) listed and describedthe bird speciespresent in Haleakalaand Hawaii Volcanoesnation- al parks, but gave little detailedinformation on distributionand abundance. The unpublishedreport (Warner1967) of an expeditionto KipahuluValley (now partly includedin the Kipahulu Districtof HaleakalaNational Park) describedthe rediscoveryof two endemicspecies of Hawaiian forestbirds, but no other avifaunalsurveys of Kipahulu took place until we began the work describedhere. Since our work was completed, the U.S. Fish and WildlifeService has also completed its surveys of forestbirds on the islandof Maul (Scottet al. ms.), but theircoverage of the park wasless comprehensive than ours, and they were unable to surveyareas repeatedly or at different seasonsof the year. In 1975 the Cooperative National Parks Resources StudiesUnit (CPSU) funded researchersat the Universityof Hawaii to con- duct inventoriesof the biotain Hawaii'stwo nationalparks. -

First documented at-sea records of “intermediate morph” Soft-plumaged Petrel Pterodroma mollis and clarification of polymorphism in the species. Marine Ornithology 43: 161–164. The Soft-plumaged Petrel is a gadfly petrel that occurs widely across the southern oceans and exhibits plumage polymorphism. Pale- bellied individuals make up the vast majority of the species, while dark individuals are relatively rare. Intermediate forms are rarer still and, according to some authors, known only from museum specimens. We describe a number of at-sea records of intermediate-plumaged individuals seen off southwest Western Australia, including a previously undocumented streaked variant. Our observations indicate that plumage polymorphism within the species covers a continuous spectrum of variation between typical pale and wholly dark individuals. Threats to both species include light attraction and fallout, collisions with power lines and other structures, predation by invasive animals, and habitat degradation. Both species were assumed to be extirpated from the island of Oahu despite limited survey effort. We used survey data from Kauai (both species) and Maui (Hawaiian Petrel only) to model suitable habitat and light conditions. We then projected this model onto Oahu to identify potential survey sites. From April to September of 2016–2017, we deployed automated acoustic recording units at 13 potentially suitable sites across Oahu. We detected Newell’s Shearwaters at 2 sites; one on the leeward slopes of Mount Kaala in the Waianae Mountains and another at Poamoho in the Koolau Mountains. -

Status and Occurrence of Murphy’s Petrel (Pterodroma ultima) in British Columbia. By Rick Toochin and Louis Haviland. Submitted: April 15, 2018. Introduction and Distribution The Murphy’s Petrel (Pterodroma ultima) is a seldom seen seabird species that is listed by Bird Life International (2016) and IUCN (2016) as Near Threatened. This species breeds on islands of the Tropical Pacific Ocean from the Pitcairn Island group (Henderson Island, Oeno Island, and Ducie Island) (Murphy and Pennoyer 1952); the Tuamotu Island group (Mururoa Island and Fangataufa Island); islets of Rapa (Austral group) (Garnett 1984); and Manui in Gambier group (Thibault 1988); Easter Island and Salas y Gomez, Chile (Flores et al. 2014); and possibly on Cook Island (Gill 1996); and the Juan Fernandez Islands (Flood et al. 2016). In the Pitcairn Islands, an estimated 2,500 (± 500) bred on Henderson, 12,500 (± 2,500) on Oeno, and 250,000 (± 29,000) on Ducie (Brooke 1995). Following rat eradication on Oeno in 1997, the population there had grown to at least 25,000 pairs in 2013 (IUCN 2016) In the Tuamotu Islands, colonies occur on Mururoa and Fangataufa (Holyoak and Thibault 1984), although these may have disappeared owing to nuclear tests and the recent construction of an airstrip (IUCN 2016). In the Austral Islands, it breeds only on a limited number of islets off Rapa where the population was estimated at 10-100 pairs in 1990 (Thibault and Varney 1991). In the Gambier Islands, proof of breeding was found for the first time on Manui and numbers were estimated at 5-10 pairs (Thibault and Bretagnolle 1999). -
Movement Patterns of Hawaiian Petrels and Newell's Sheatwaters

Blaha3 Abstract: We studied movements and distribution and abundance of endan gered Hawaiian Petrels ('Ua'u [Pterodroma sandwichensis Ridgway]) and threat ened Newell's Shearwaters ('A'o [Puffinus auricularis newelli Henshaw]) on the island of Hawai'i in May-June 2001 and 2002. We recorded radar targets of either species at 14 of the 18 sites but recorded no birds visually at any site. Movement rates of petrels and shearwaters were very low (0-3.2 targets per hour) over all except one of the sites (Waipi'o Valley: 25.8 targets per hour). We saw radar targets moving from shortly after sunset throughout the rest of the sampling, suggesting that both petrels and shearwaters were present. Highest movement rates occurred 1-2 hr after sunset, when primarily Newell's Shear waters are flying. Timing of evening movements suggests that Hawaiian Petrels fly over the northern and southern parts of the island and may dominate on Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. In contrast, timing suggests that Newell's Shear waters fly over essentially the entire island (except in the southwestern part, where no birds appear to occur), dominate numerically in the Kohala Moun tains, and occur in low numbers on Mauna Loa, in the Puna District, and on the northern slopes of Mauna Kea. Evening flight directions were predominantly inland at all sites except four. The limited radar data suggest that a substantial population change did not occur in the Puna District from 1995 to 2001-2002. -

Phillips6, Francis Zino4,7 & Jacob González-Solís1 Received: 30 September 2015 The conservation status and taxonomy of the three gadfly petrels that breed in Macaronesia is still Accepted: 03 March 2016 discussed partly due to the scarce information on their spatial ecology. Using geolocator and capture- Published: 22 March 2016 mark-recapture data, we examined phenology, natal philopatry and breeding-site fidelity, year-round distribution, habitat usage and at-sea activity of the three closely-related gadfly petrels that breed in Macaronesia: Zino’s petrel Pterodroma madeira, Desertas petrel P. deserta and Cape Verde petrel P. feae. All P. feae remained around the breeding area during their non-breeding season, whereas P. madeira and P. deserta dispersed far from their colony, migrating either to the Cape Verde region, further south to equatorial waters in the central Atlantic, or to the Brazil Current. The three taxa displayed a clear allochrony in timing of breeding. Habitat modelling and at-sea activity patterns highlighted similar environmental preferences and foraging behaviours of the three taxa. Finally, no chick or adult was recaptured away from its natal site and survival estimates were relatively high at all study sites, indicating strong philopatry and breeding-site fidelity for the three taxa. The combination of high philopatry, marked breeding asynchrony and substantial spatio-temporal segregation of their year-round distribution suggest very limited gene flow among the three taxa.
