The essay’s specific aim is to transform carnivorous appetites by subverting the integrity of America’s national gastronomic emblem – the hamburger. The article examines how hamburgers are unsustainable food system commodities that exacerbate state-sanctioned climate change, analyzes the underpinnings of ecophobic beef literature—specifically the graphic narrative—that serves as state propaganda, and shows how American comics can alternately promote sustainability nexuses by creating awareness of how food systems impact climate change. Likewise, theories of animation often foreground its disruptive potential. Taking an interdisciplinary approach that encompasses girlhood studies, animation studies, and screen studies, this article analyses the representation of the two main girl characters, Tina and Louise Belcher, in the animated sitcom Bob’s Burgers (2011–present). Taking this concept of mutability as its central focus, it argues that animation is an ideal medium for representing girlhood, given its disruptive potential and non-linear capacities, whereby characters are often frozen in time. With no commitment to aging its young female characters, Bob’s Burgers is instead able to construct a landscape of girlhood that allows for endless reversal, contradiction and overlap in the experiences of Tina and Louise, whose existence as animations reveals girlhood as a liminal space in which girls can be one thing and the other – gullible and intelligent, vulnerable and strong, sexual and innocent – without negating their multifarious experiences.

Good Character: Reality Television Production as Dirty Work Abstract Audiences, critics, and academics have raised significant moral concerns about reality television. The genre is commonly criticized for being exploitative, harmful, and fake. By extension, reality TV workers are morally tainted, seen as dirty workers of questionable character. This dissertation describes the sources of moral taint in reality television production and how production workers dispel this taint—making their work acceptable and even glorious to themselves and others—through everyday micro-level interaction. The data for this study comes from approximately 2 years of ethnographic observation at 2 reality TV production companies, attendance at 2 reality TV industry conferences, and interviews with 83 respondents, including reality TV production workers, television network executives, and people who auditioned to be on reality shows. Findings focus on the development process, during which production companies generate ideas for new television shows and pitch those ideas to television networks. First, I describe the development process and three significant moral dilemmas that workers face at this initial stage of production: creating negative representations (e.g.

  • Family Guy: Textual Devices and Masculine Vices
FAMILY GUY: TEXTUAL DEVICES AND MASCULINE VICES by CARSON JUSTINE KLOSTERMAN MARTIN (Under the Direction of Christine Harold) ABSTRACT As the first animated situation comedy to be “uncancelled” due to its record breaking DVD sales, Family Guy is one in several contemporary animated sitcoms attracting a predominantly male audience. This project explores the attraction of this crude, politically incorrect satire of American suburbia to nineteen to thirty-four year old males. By exposing strategies of intertextuality and self-reflexivity, this project reveals that audiences are rewarded for media saturation. Further, in continuing a tradition of television portrayals of working-class men as foolish, childish, and unmanly, Peter Griffin’s character invites the audience to mock working-class stereotypes while simultaneously solidifying their subordinate status. This project attempts to add to the current discussion of animated situation comedy as well and working-class media representations. • Little Girls and the Things That They Love”
1 “Little girls and the things that they love”: My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, Audience, Identity, and the Privilege of Contemporary Fan Culture Ewan Kirkland Abstract: The recent generation of My Little Pony has received popular and academic attention due to its visible following of young male enthusiasts. This article explores the so- called Brony phenomenon in terms of gender and age, cult spectator practices, fandom, masculinities, and the kinds of participatory culture with which the new series is associated. Despite the apparent transgression of men enjoying a television show clearly coded as being for young girls, the article argues that Brony practices reproduce many male-centered aspects of fan media consumption in a manner that recuperates the femininity of the brand according to masculine values and cultures. The femininity of the thirty-year-old series is placed in historical and theoretical context, illustrating parallels between current and earlier incarnations of the franchise and its continuities with other women-centered popular media. Particularly significant here is the program’s emphasis on female friendship. Yet such “gynocentric” qualities and the series’ affinity with young viewers might have been eroded in recent episodes. This is partly through the incorporation of more masculine genres, but also in the increasing address of the show to its online fandom, an audience employing channels of expression from which young people are effectively excluded. These developments function to marginalize the series’ core audience—“little girls”—in a process of appropriation and redefinition that ultimately serves the interests of a more visible and powerful demographic. Keywords: Brony, fandom, male privilege, My Little Pony Introduction At the 2012 BronyCon, a convention for adult and adolescent male fans of the animated series My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic (MLPFIM, syndicated, 2010–), showrunner Lauren Faust addressed a cheering crowd in a heartfelt expression of gratitude.
