Good Character: Reality Television Production as Dirty Work Abstract Audiences, critics, and academics have raised significant moral concerns about reality television. The genre is commonly criticized for being exploitative, harmful, and fake. By extension, reality TV workers are morally tainted, seen as dirty workers of questionable character. This dissertation describes the sources of moral taint in reality television production and how production workers dispel this taint—making their work acceptable and even glorious to themselves and others—through everyday micro-level interaction. The data for this study comes from approximately 2 years of ethnographic observation at 2 reality TV production companies, attendance at 2 reality TV industry conferences, and interviews with 83 respondents, including reality TV production workers, television network executives, and people who auditioned to be on reality shows. Findings focus on the development process, during which production companies generate ideas for new television shows and pitch those ideas to television networks. First, I describe the development process and three significant moral dilemmas that workers face at this initial stage of production: creating negative representations (e.g.

  • Family Guy: Textual Devices and Masculine Vices
FAMILY GUY: TEXTUAL DEVICES AND MASCULINE VICES by CARSON JUSTINE KLOSTERMAN MARTIN (Under the Direction of Christine Harold) ABSTRACT As the first animated situation comedy to be “uncancelled” due to its record breaking DVD sales, Family Guy is one in several contemporary animated sitcoms attracting a predominantly male audience. This project explores the attraction of this crude, politically incorrect satire of American suburbia to nineteen to thirty-four year old males. By exposing strategies of intertextuality and self-reflexivity, this project reveals that audiences are rewarded for media saturation. Further, in continuing a tradition of television portrayals of working-class men as foolish, childish, and unmanly, Peter Griffin’s character invites the audience to mock working-class stereotypes while simultaneously solidifying their subordinate status. This project attempts to add to the current discussion of animated situation comedy as well and working-class media representations. Reality TV Intentionally Subverts Social Progress and Gender Equality Reality TV, 2013 Jennifer L. Pozner is the founder and executive director of Women in Media & News, which advocates for female viewpoints in the media, and is the editor of the WTMN blog. She published a book-length study on gender, race, and class in reality television, Reality Bites Back: The Troubling Truth About Guilty Pleasure TV, in 2010. Reality TV serves to counter social progress by placing women in roles that reinforce lingering gender stereotypes. Reality dating shows increasingly portray women as hopelessly dependent on men for support and validation, despite the fact that women are taking leadership roles in the highest levels of politics, academics, industry, and sports. This trend should be seen as a backlash against social progress and an attempt to undermine the feminist movement. • Prime Time Animation: Television Animation and American Culture
Prime Time Animation Television animation and American culture Edited by Carol A. Stabile and Mark Harrison PRIME TIME ANIMATION In September 1960 a television show emerged from the mists of prehistoric time to take its place as the mother of all animated sitcoms. The Flintstones spawned dozens of imitations, just as, two decades later, The Simpsons sparked a renaissance of prime time animation. The essays in this volume critically survey the landscape of television animation, from Bedrock to Springfield and beyond. The contributors explore a series of key issues and questions, including: How do we explain the animation explosion of the 1960s? Why did it take nearly twenty years following the cancellation of The Flintstones for animation to find its feet again as prime time fare? In addressing these questions, as well as many others, the essays in the first section examine the relation between earlier, made-for-cinema animated production (such as the Warner Looney Toons shorts) and television-based animation; the role of animation in the economies of broadcast and cable television; and the links between animation production and brand image. Contributors also examine specific programs like The Powerpuff Girls, Daria, The Simpsons, The Ren and Stimpy Show and South Park from the perspective of fans, exploring fan cybercommunities, investi- gating how ideas of ‘class’ and ‘taste’ apply to recent TV animation, and addressing themes such as irony, alienation, and representations of the family. Carol A. Stabile is associate professor of communication and director of the Women’s Studies Program at the University of Pittsburgh. She is the author of Feminism and the Technological Fix (1994), editor of Turning the Century: Essays in Media and Cultural Studies (2000), and is currently working on a book on media coverage of crime from the 1830s to the present.

  • Visions of Labour: Socialist Realism, American Reality TV and the Politics of Documentary
Visions of Labour: Socialist Realism, American Reality TV and the Politics of Documentary by Tetiana Soviak A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Comparative Literature University of Toronto © Copyright by Tetiana Soviak 2017 Visions of Labour: Socialist Realism, American Reality TV and the Politics of Documentary Tetiana Soviak Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Comparative Literature University of Toronto 2017 Abstract This dissertation considers a number of ideological visions of labour constructed through film and television. The socialist realist vision of work is considered through Soviet films of the 1930s within the context of the building of a workers’ state. This was a modernist dream of non- alienated human labour where the workers create and master the world, their labour revealing and capturing the utopian content in the now. In contrast to this utopian vision are several documentaries that depict technocratic dreams or nightmares of post-apocalyptic societies only to reveal that that future is already here for some. In the documentary central to this project, Michael Glawogger’s Workingman’s Death, workers inhabit the nowhere places of the global economy, their work unrecognizable as modern day labour. In construction of labour within global capitalism, the workers are rendered as alien and indeterminate, making identification and solidarity difficult if not impossible. The last section of the dissertation considers the vision of labour and the worker as constructed by neoliberalism not in faraway places but in our living rooms: workers competing on reality television for our entertainment. These pictures of labour reveal that work and the worker are socio-historical constructs, and that one of the central goals of emancipatory politics should be the self-representation of workers.

In order to remain at the vanguard, we are attentive to creative trends, business practices, technological advances and other changes in our medium — and, when necessary, to ensure that we remain relevant, we adapt. In 2017, we made several adjustments reflecting this imperative. At the start of the year, in acknowledgment of the prevalence and influence of dance in both scripted and unscripted programming, we expanded our board of governors with the addition of a new peer group for choreographers, who had previously joined as members of the Directors peer group. But with the increase in dance, and more opportunities for choreographers, their rising numbers warranted a new peer group of their own, bringing the number of peer groups in our boardroom to 30. Shortly afterward, we updated the rules and procedures for our marquee event, the Primetime Emmy Awards, with the creation of categories for music supervision and casting for reality series.
