4 French History and Civilization Colin Jones As I take my battered, now coverless, spine-half-broken copy off the shelf, I discover that the 60th anniversary of the publication of George Rudé’s The Crowd in the French Revolution is also the 50th anniverary of my purchasing it. The physical dilapidation of my personal copy is tribute not just to the passage of time but also to my frequent consultation over the years of this pioneering volume in the tradition of “history from below” — the Revolution, as Rudé with modest punctiliousness put it, “seen as it were from below”.1 Reflecting, I wonder whether I purchased the book just after I had seen Rudé — my only sighting in fact — deliver a lecture Oxford in that year, dressed in an elegantly cut three-piece suit which made him look more like a natty city gent than the radical historian and activist. Certainly, I was at the lecture and bought the book because I was studying the French Revolution and because 1969 happened to be one year after 1968, so “revolution” and “history from below” were not only in the air — they were also entering the bloodstream of the historical profession. Rudé was, after all, one of the “five musketeers” — along with Richard Cobb and Albert Soboul (the two very much Rudé co-workers), and Edward Thompson and Eric Hobsbawm — who were making this kind of approach to the past a central preoccupation of the discipline in Anglo- French circles for decades to come. Time has dealt Rudé’s influential volume some very telling blows. -
Why the Biography of Raymond Carr
Historicizing the Historian: Writing the life of Raymond Carr* María Jesús González DVENTURERS, ARTISTS, CERTAIN INTELLECTUALS, novelists, kings A and queens, as well as politicians and revolutionaries of all kinds seem to be natural subjects for biography. When I decided to write the biography of the historian Sir Raymond Carr (b. 1919), I thought, quite naively, that it was a slightly eccentric thing to do.1 I soon realized that I had entered a walled garden in which there grew a number of similar plants that fed on memory: historians’ autobiog- raphies, égo-histoires, interviews,2 the customary potted biography one finds in Festschriften,3 as well as biographies of historians writ- ten by other historians. There has been a steadily increasing output of the latter since 2000. In 2010, the year the Spanish edition of my bi- ography of Carr was published, five other historians were the sub- jects of monograph-length biographies in the English language alone.4 Not all historians are comfortable with the genre, and one of the doubters was E.H. Carr (no relative of Raymond). Despite his dictum “before the history study the historian” and despite being a biographer himself, E.H. 15 Plumb 1226 15/11/2004 10:41 Page 268 JOHN PLUMB 15 Plumb 1226 15/11/2004 10:41 Page 269 John Harold Plumb 1911–2001 SIR JOHN PLUMB, who died on 21 October 2001, having celebrated his ninetieth birthday two months before, had been in ill health for some time —but in rude health for a great deal longer. To his friends, and also to his enemies, he was always known as ‘Jack’, and he invariably published over the uncharacteristically tight-lipped by-line of J. H. Plumb. On both sides of the Atlantic, the many obituaries and appreciations rightly drew atten- tion to his memorable character and ample wealth, to his irrepressible vitality and unabashed delight in the good things of life, to the light and the dark of his complex and conflicted nature, and to the ups and downs of his professional career. They also stressed his equivocal relationship with Cambridge University (where he failed to gain an undergraduate scholarship, but was Professor of Modern British History from 1966 to 1974), his nearly seventy-year-long connection with Christ’s College (where he was a Fellow from 1946 to 1978, Master from 1978 to 1982, and then again a Fellow until his death), and his latter-day conversion (if such it was) from impassioned radical to militant Thatcherite. And they noted the human insight and sparkling style that were the hallmarks of his best work, his lifelong conviction that history must reach a broad audience and inform our understanding of present-day affairs, and his unrivalled skills in nurturing (and often terrifying) youthful promise and scholarly talent.1 1 Throughout these notes, I have abbreviated Sir John Plumb to JHP, and C. -

a Migrations of the Holy: Explaining Religious Change in Medieval and Early Modern Europe Alexandra Walsham University of Cambridge Cambridge, United Kingdom How do we conceptualize and explain religious change in medieval and early modern Europe without perpetuating distorting paradigms inherited from the very era of the past that is the subject of our study? How can we do justice to historical development over time without resorting to linear grand narratives that have their intellectual origins in the very movements that we seek to comprehend? In one way or another, this challenging question has inspired all my published work to date, which has focused on the ways in which early mod- ern society adapted to the religious revolutions that unfolded before it. My work has explored the ambiguities, anomalies, and ironies that accompany dramatic moments of ideological and cultural rupture. It has sought to bal- ance recognition of the decisive transformations wrought by the Protestant and Catholic Reformations with awareness of the complexities and contra- dictions that characterized their evolution and entrenchment in practice. It has been marked by a consuming interest in the currents of continuity that tempered, mediated, and even facilitated the upheavals of the early mod- ern era. One consequence of this preoccupation with analyzing how and why cultures are held in tension and suspension during critical phases of transition is that I have been very much less effective in acknowledging and accounting for religious change itself. This is my Achilles’ heel as a historian, and one that I share with a number of other historians of my generation. -

Smug Britannia: The Dominance of (the) English in Current History Writing and Its Pathologies PETER BALDWIN 1 Richard Evans, in his recent inaugural lecture as Regius Professor of Modern History at Cambridge, claimed that British historians are more cosmopolitan than their continental European colleagues. They write more about other nations and they participate more in debates abroad. If true, this is a provocative assertion, raising the question as to why some cultures are curious about the world, while others rest self-contentedly in themselves. If restless curiosity about the world is laudable, then it is rare that a prominent historian trumpets the virtues of his country. Only in the nineteenth century did historians proclaim national pre-eminence, practically as part of their jobs. For Evans praises not just his colleagues. His tribute is to the cultural curiosity of the English-speaking world. ‘Anglophone societies’, he approvingly quotes a colleague, ‘seem to be fundamentally as interested in the pasts of other cultures as they are in their own’ (p. 8). Much of the book into which Evans’s lecture was padded (Cosmopolitan Islanders: British Historians and the European Continent, Oxford, 2009)isgivenoverto summaries of modern British historiography and excerpts from colleagues’ emails. The interesting parts are quantitative. He has classified historians in the UK and US, France, Germany and Italy – whether they work on their national histories, on foreign countries, or on both. English-speaking historians, Evans shows, are much more active in writing the history of other countries than is true – mutatis mutandis – on the continent. Over half of Italian historians are working on their own nation. -

I owe him much. © Olwen Hufton stenton qos 12/2/02 9:44 am Page 3 I in this university in the late sixties when the concern emerged to construct a past for women, the largest missing presence as it then seemed in the canon. It was a good time to be at Reading. Expansion was the order of the day and no one talked about economic crises. There was a mar- velous clutch of medieval and early modern European historians and the wider political framework was one of optimism that change was on the agen- da. Jim Holt, now Sir James Holt, was a creative and energetic head of depart- ment. Academics did not live in the straitjackets of QAAs and RAEs: and per- sonality and diversity rather than uniformity seemed the desiderata. Debts were modest at both the institutional and the student level. Reading was pop- ulated by many amiable ghosts and resonated with stories of how a fledgling university was developed. There was more than a soupcon of eccentricity.1 The Stenton lecture was founded to keep alive both a medieval tradition and preserve the memory of a man (and his wife) who distinguished medieval British History for several decades and were critical in the shaping of the History department at Reading.
