In descriptive studies, where the source and target texts are the main primary sources (“primary text products”), “extra-textual” sources are looked at with “circumspection” (Toury 1995:65). However, in historical research methodologies they are central. This article examines the use and value of archives, manuscripts and, especially, translator papers, post-hoc accounts and interviews in producing a history of translation and translators. -

Is There a Future for Italian Microhistory in the Age of Global History?
Is There a Future for Italian Microhistory in the Age of Global History? Francesca Trivellato In the late 1970s and 80s, particularly after the appearance of Carlo Ginzburg’s The Cheese and the Worms (1976) and Giovanni Levi’s Inheriting Power (1985), Italian microhistory shook the ground of established historiographical paradigms and practices. Since then, as Anthony Grafton put it, “Microhistories have captivated readers, won places on syllabi, been translated into many languages – and enraged and delighted their [the authors’] fellow professionals” (2006, 62). Are the questions that propelled Italian microhistory still significant or have they lost impetus? How has the meaning of microhistory changed over the past thirty years? And what can this approach contribute nowadays, when ‘globalization’ and ‘global’ are the dominant keywords in the humanities and the social sciences – keywords that we hardly associate with anything micro? In what follows, I wish to put forth two arguments. I suggest that the potential of a microhistorical approach for global history remains underexploited. Since the 1980s, the encounter between Italian microhistory and global history has been confined primarily to the narrative form. A host of studies of individuals whose lives traversed multiple linguistic, political, and religious boundaries has enjoyed considerable success among scholars and the broad public alike. These are predicated on the idea that a micro- and biographical scale can best portray the entanglement of cultural traditions produced by the growing contacts and clashes between different societies that followed the sixteenth- century European geographical expansion. They also reflect a greater comfort among historians and the general reader, perhaps most pronounced in Anglophone countries, with narration rather than social scientific analysis. -

In particular, we examine the phenomenon of war in its broader socio-economic context between the emergence of the modern nation-state and the end of World War II. Students are required to do all the reading. Student are required to make a group presentation in class on the readings for one class (25% of the grade), and there will be one big final (75%). Course Requirements Participation and a presentation in the seminar comprises 25% of your grade. A final exam counts for 75%. The final exam is given during the period scheduled by the University. In particular instances, students may substitute a serious research paper for the final. Students interested in the research paper option should approach me no later than one week after the mid-term. Chairperson Dr. Victor Bailey Date approved: April 6, 2012 iii ABSTRACT Many observers of British national identity assume that decolonization presaged a crisis in the meaning of Britishness. The rise of the new imperial history, which contends Empire was central to Britishness, has only strengthened faith in this assumption, yet few historians have explored the actual connections between end of empire and British national identity. This project examines just this assumption by studying the final moments of decolonization in Africa between 1959 and 1963. Debates in the popular political culture and media demonstrate the extent to which British identity and meanings of Britishness on the world stage intertwined with the process of decolonization. A discursive tradition characterized as the “Whiggish vision,” in the words of historian Wm. Roger Louis, emerged most pronounced in this era. This vision, developed over the centuries of Britain imagining its Empire, posited that the British Empire was a benign, liberalizing force in the world and forecasted a teleology in which Empire would peacefully transform into a free, associative Commonwealth of Nations. -

4 French History and Civilization Colin Jones As I Take My Battered, Now
4 French History and Civilization Colin Jones As I take my battered, now coverless, spine-half-broken copy off the shelf, I discover that the 60th anniversary of the publication of George Rudé’s The Crowd in the French Revolution is also the 50th anniverary of my purchasing it. The physical dilapidation of my personal copy is tribute not just to the passage of time but also to my frequent consultation over the years of this pioneering volume in the tradition of “history from below” — the Revolution, as Rudé with modest punctiliousness put it, “seen as it were from below”.1 Reflecting, I wonder whether I purchased the book just after I had seen Rudé — my only sighting in fact — deliver a lecture Oxford in that year, dressed in an elegantly cut three-piece suit which made him look more like a natty city gent than the radical historian and activist. Certainly, I was at the lecture and bought the book because I was studying the French Revolution and because 1969 happened to be one year after 1968, so “revolution” and “history from below” were not only in the air — they were also entering the bloodstream of the historical profession. Rudé was, after all, one of the “five musketeers” — along with Richard Cobb and Albert Soboul (the two very much Rudé co-workers), and Edward Thompson and Eric Hobsbawm — who were making this kind of approach to the past a central preoccupation of the discipline in Anglo- French circles for decades to come. Time has dealt Rudé’s influential volume some very telling blows. -

Focusing on a crucifix widely associated with the Battle of Lepanto (1571) on display in the cathedral of Barcelona, the article outlines a material microhistory. Microhistorians’ sense for the complexity of the past, the problems of historical knowledge, the implications of doing history, and their experiments with narratives help to draft reflective and provocative narratives about the past life of objects – and their consequences for the present. The material microhistory of the Lepanto crucifix in Barcelona shifts traditional perspectives. -

The Society for Army Historical Research Annual Booklist 2019-2020
The Society for Army Historical Research Annual Booklist 2019-2020 www.sahr.co.uk In the hope of spreading knowledge of new favourites and proven classics from the world of military publishing, the Society asked a number of military historians from various backgrounds for their book recommendations. This year, the brief was for five favourite books on the British Army (including Imperial, Dominion, and Commonwealth forces). Contributors were also asked to suggest one topic for a book that does not exist but ought to be written: it is hoped that there may be someone amongst the recipients of this list who will take up the challenge and help fill some of the remaining gaps in the existing scholarship. 1 Professor Ian Beckett retired as Professor of Military History from the University of Kent in 2015. He has held chairs in both the UK and US including as the Major General Matthew C. Horner Distinguished Professor of Military Theory at the US Marine Corps University, Quantico, Virginia. A Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, he was Secretary of the Army Records Society from 1990 to 2000 and Chairman of its Council from 2001 to 2014. A Vice President of the Friends of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, he has been Secretary of the Buckinghamshire Military Museum Trust since its inception in 1985. He has been a member of the Society’s Templer Medal Sub-committee and is currently one of the judging panel for the New York Historical Society’s annual $50,000 Gilder Lehrman Military History Prize. His work has centred on British auxiliary forces, the First World War, and the late Victorian Army.
