In the process, nutrients and energy are released to plant uptake and the higher food chain. These are the “natural soil cycles” that we attempt to manage today. Soil Profiles Soil profiles are two-dimensional slices or exposures of soils like we can view from a road cut or a soil pit. Soil profiles reveal soil horizons, which are fundamental genetic layers, weathered into underlying parent materials, in response to leaching and organic matter decomposition. Fig. 1.12 -- Soils develop horizons due to the combined process of (1) organic matter deposition and decomposition and (2) illuviation of clays, oxides and other mobile compounds downward with the wetting front. In moist environments (e.g. Virginia) free salts (Cl and SO4 ) are leached completely out of the profile, but they accumulate in desert soils. Appendix D Soil Series Descriptions Soil Series Descriptions Soil Orders Mollisols — This order covers a considerable land area of western and southern Minnesota and is the basis for the state's productive agricultural base. The formative syllable, oll, is derived from the Latin word mollis, or soft. Its most distinguishing feature is a thick, dark-colored surface layer that is high in nutrients. It occurs throughout the former prairie areas of Minnesota. The Latin term for soft in its name is descriptive in that most of these soils usually have a rather loose, low-density surface. Three suborders of mollisols occur in Minnesota: Aquolls, Udolls, and Ustolls. Alfisols — This order covers a large land area in Minnesota, part of which is now cultivated and part forested. Alf is the formative element and is coined from a soil term, pedalfer. Pedalfers were identified in the 1930s as soils of the eastern part of the United States with an accumulation of aluminum and iron. The alf refers to the chemical symbols for aluminum (Al) and iron (Fe). Alfisols are primarily fertile soils of the forest, formed in loamy or clayey material. The surface layer of soil, usually light gray or brown, has less clay in it than does the subsoil. These soils are usually moist during the summer, although they may dry during occasional droughts. Two suborders of alfisols occur in Minnesota: Aqualfs and Udalfs. Histosols — The formative element in the name is ist and comes from the Greek word histos, which means tissue. This is an appropriate association because these soils are formed from plant remains in wet environments like marshes and bogs. -

JOURNAL OF GEOSCIENCE EDUCATION 62, 691–700 (2014) The Geohistorical Time Arrow: From Steno’s Stratigraphic Principles to Boltzmann’s Past Hypothesis Gadi Kravitz1,a ABSTRACT Geologists have always embraced the time arrow in order to reconstruct the past geology of Earth, thus turning geology into a historical science. The covert assumption regarding the direction of time from past to present appears in Nicolas Steno’s principles of stratigraphy. The intuitive–metaphysical nature of Steno’s assumption was based on a biblical narrative; therefore, he never attempted to justify it in any way. In this article, I intend to show that contrary to Steno’s principles, the theoretical status of modern geohistory is much better from a scientific point of view. The uniformity principle enables modern geohistory to establish the time arrow on the basis of the second law of thermodynamics, i.e., on a physical law, on the one hand, and on a historical law, on the other. In other words, we can say that modern actualism is based on the uniformity principle. This principle is essentially based on the principle of causality, which in turn obtains its justification from the second law of thermodynamics. I will argue that despite this advantage, the shadow that metaphysics has cast on geohistory has not disappeared completely, since the thermodynamic time arrow is based on a metaphysical assumption—Boltzmann’s past hypothesis. All professors engaged in geological education should know these philosophical–theoretical arguments and include them in the curriculum of studies dealing with the basic assumptions of geoscience in general and the uniformity principle and deep time in particular. -

Name: _________________________________ Soil Texture Directions: Read, highlight, and answer the schoology questions. Until now, we have spent our time defining soil. We know that soil comes from broken down rocks and minerals that have been weathered both mechanically and chemically. We also know that soil contains a variety of parts consisting of sand, soil, clay, and humus. But what is the best soil? I’m sure you are saying loam is the best. You are right, but what exactly is loam? To understand loam, we need to understand how three parts of soil come together. If I were to ask you to draw soil, it would probably look like the image to the right. Most would just draw a pile of dirt. As we are learning though, soil is much more complex than that. Sand, Silt and Clay One of the key ways that we characterize rocks is by texture. Remember that texture refers to how something feels. It can feel grainy, rough, or smooth. Larger particles feel rough while smaller particles feel smooth. For soil, we also use texture to help characterize the type. The texture of soil, just like rocks, refers to the size of the particles that make up the soil. The terms sand, silt, and clay refer to different sizes of the soil particles. Sand, being the larger size of particles, feels gritty. Silt, being moderate in size, has a smooth or floury texture. Clay, being the smaller size of particles, feels sticky. Look at the figure to the right. The size of the circle is relative to each size particle. -

Abstract Carbon pool and carbon flux measurements of different habitats were made in the high Arctic coastal tundra of Spitsbergen. The studied catchment was situated on the exposed west coast, where westerly winds produce daily precipitation in form of rain, drizzle and fog. The storage of organic carbon in the catchment of Eidembukta amounts to 5.98 kg C m-2, mainly within the lower horizons of deep soils. Between 5.2 - 23.6 % of the carbon pool is stored in plant material. During the cold and cloudy summer of 1996, net CO2 flux measure- ments showed carbon fluxes from soil to atmosphere even during the brightest hours of the day. We estimate -2 -1 that the coastal tundra of Spitsbergen lost carbon at a rate of 0.581 g C m d predominantly as CO2-C. Carbon loss (7.625 mg C m-2 d-1) as TOC in small tundra rivers accounts only for a small proportion (1.31 %) of the total carbon loss. D HICKS, Chief Soils Engineer North Oil 'lina State Highway and Pubi Works Commission SYNOPSIS Soil surveys are made to obtain information relative to the type, extent of occurrence, and characteristics of the soils in a given area. The use of the pedological system of classification permits easy identification of the soils as to type, and knowledge of the characteristics of various soil types and previous experience with them can be utilized in planning and design. A large portion of many states has been surveyed by the Department of Agri• culture and maps are available showing the location of the various soil types. These maps may be used as guides in making soil surveys, and in many instances they contain all of the information desired. When agricultural soil maps are not available or when extreme accuracy is necessary, a soil survey must be made. The pedological system of classification can be used in making the survey by anyone with some knowledge of the system, assisted by a soil identification "key". This paper describes the use of agricultural soil maps by the North Carolina State Highway Department and a soil identification key used in making soil sur• veys IS included.
