Scott Campbell certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: PERFECTION, WRETCHED, NORMAL, AND NOWHERE: A REGIONAL GEOGRAPHY OF AMERICAN TELEVISION SETTINGS Committee: Chairperson* Date approved: ii ABSTRACT Drawing inspiration from numerous place image studies in geography and other social sciences, this dissertation examines the senses of place and regional identity shaped by more than seven hundred American television series that aired from 1947 to 2007. Each state‘s relative share of these programs is described. The geographic themes, patterns, and images from these programs are analyzed, with an emphasis on identity in five American regions: the Mid-Atlantic, New England, the Midwest, the South, and the West. The dissertation concludes with a comparison of television‘s senses of place to those described in previous studies of regional identity. iii For Sue iv CONTENTS List of Tables vi Acknowledgments vii 1. • Representations of Redface: Decolonizing the American Situation Comedy's "Indian"
REPRESENTATIONS OF REDFACE: DECOLONIZING THE AMERICAN SITUATION COMEDY'S "INDIAN" Dustin S. Tahmahkera A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2007 Committee: Lynda Dixon, Advisor Bradford Clark Graduate Faculty Representative Don McQuarie Angela Nelson © 2007 Dustin Tahmahkera All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Lynda Dixon, Advisor This study critically analyzes the thematic development of representations of redface, or of playing “Indian,” by non-Native characters in live-action and animated American sitcoms. Predominantly White characters have played “Indian” to reeenact nostalgic colonialist versions of historical events, to gain fame and fortune deceptively, to be honorary members of a tribe, to acknowledge heritage through a distant “Indian” relative, and to be in “Indian” clubs. This dissertation also discusses the dehumanizing roles of rare on-screen “Indians” as cultureless dupes or subservient, vanishing Natives who legitimize and authenticate non-Indigenes’ constructions of redface. Representations of redface in American sitcoms, from their appearance in the 1951 I Love Lucy “The Adagio” to the 2006 The Suite Life of Zack and Cody “Boston Tea Party,” have largely defined the sitcom’s “Indian.” The result is a redface collective that emphasizes the recurring visibility of (mis)leading “Indian” players that represent, or stand in for, the mostly invisible Indigenes. American sitcoms have set forth a restricted logic on how “Indians” in comedic television should appear. In turn, this limited logic of the sitcom’s “Indian” transmits a narrow, non-fully human view of real Indigenes to non-Indigenous and Indigenous audiences.

  • Happy Days Star Donny Most to Headline 'ART' at the St. Jacobs Country Playhouse
Happy Days Star Donny Most to Headline ‘ART’ at the St. Jacobs Country Playhouse All-Star Cast for Drayton Entertainment Fall Production Wednesday, August 28, 2019 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – After successfully presenting George Wendt in Death of a Salesman and Cindy Williams in Thoroughly Modern Millie, Drayton Entertainment has once again accomplished a major casting coup. Popular television actor Donny Most, best known for his role as jokester Ralph Malph on the classic sitcom Happy Days, will play Serge in the not-for-profit professional theatre company’s upcoming production of the hit play ‘ART’. The production will run at the St. Jacobs Country Playhouse from October 2 to October 20. “Donny Most remains one of Hollywood’s most cherished television actors. In addition to his memorable role as funny-guy Ralph Malph on Happy Days, he’s appeared as a guest star on countless other TV shows, and built an equally impressive career as a stage performer,” says Alex Mustakas, Artistic Director of Drayton Entertainment. “Based on the incredible response when George Wendt was in St. Jacobs in 2017, I recommend that patrons buy tickets as soon as possible.” Happy Days was a defining sitcom of the ‘70s and ‘80s, airing 255 half-hour episodes from 1974 to 1984 spanning eleven seasons. Set in the mid-1950s, the hit show chronicled the escapades of Milwaukee teens Richie Cunningham (Ron Howard) and his best buddies, Ralph Malph (Donny Most), Potsie Webber (Anson Williams), and definitive cool-guy Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli (Henry Winkler). Developed by legendary director and producer Garry Marshall, the popularity of Happy Days resulted in several spin-off series, eight books, a musical, and a variety of merchandise.
