A simple critique of Dominionism There are several varieties of Dominionism flourishing today; some in conservative circles, other more extreme versions amongst Charismatics. What is Dominionism? It is the idea that the church will become so powerful that, in one way or another, will dominate the world; usually the idea is of a Christian world government. Now Dominionism is usually associated with a postmillennial eschatology; that is, a belief that Christ will return after a prolonged golden age of the church (which may or may not be 1,000 years long). However, not every postmillennialist is a Dominionist. Some Puritans held postmillennial views that supposed the church would grow increasingly in numbers and influence and effect an age of righteousness in society before the Lord returned; but they, mostly, did not teach that the church would rule the world. Reformed Dominion theology Reconstructionism The modern Reformed version of Dominionist ideas is called ‘Reconstructionism’ or ‘Theonomy’ and is taught by people like Rousas Rushdoony (now deceased), Gary DeMar, Gary North, David Chilton and Greg Bahnsen. It is a development of American Calvinism arising out of Reformed Presbyterianism. ‘Reconstructionism’ insists that the Bible (particularly the OT) must be applied to all areas of life and society reconstructed to obey this command. ‘Theonomy’ (from theos = God and nomos = law) refers to the idea that the civil laws of OT Israel are normative in all societies for all time, including death for adultery and homosexuality. The believer must keep the whole Mosaic Law to be sanctified and the civil law aspects are to be applied by the civil rulers. -

Theological Reflections on the Charismatic Movement – Part 1 Churchman 94/1 1980 J. I. Packer I My subject is a complex and still developing phenomenon which over the past twenty years has significantly touched the entire world church, Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican and non-episcopal Protestant, at all levels of life and personnel and across a wide theological spectrum.1 Sometimes it is called Neo-Pentecostalism because, like the older Pentecostalism which ‘spread like wildfire over the whole world’2 at the start of this century, it affirms Spirit-baptism as a distinct post-conversion, post-water-baptism experience, universally needed and universally available to those who seek it. The movement has grown, however, independently of the Pentecostal denominations, whose suspicions of its non-separatist inclusiveness have been—and in some quarters remain—deep, and its own preferred name for itself today is ‘charismatic renewal’.3 For it sees itself as a revitalizing re-entry into a long-lost world of gifts and ministries of the Holy Spirit, a re-entry which immeasurably deepens individual spiritual lives, and through which all Christendom may in due course find quickening. Charismatic folk everywhere stand on tiptoe, as it were, in excited expectation of great things in store for the church as the movement increasingly takes hold. Already its spokesmen claim for it major ecumenical significance. ‘This movement is the most unifying in Christendom today’, writes Michael Harper; ‘only in this movement are all streams uniting, and all ministries -

The British House Church Movement Of The 1970s And its connection with the emergence of the Restoration Movement I have avoided writing anything on this for decades, partly because I had many more important things to write about. However, several hundred articles and books later perhaps I should now give this some attention for several reasons. The first is that there appears to be the beginnings of a sovereign move of God to establish new, informal house churches in America, Australia and England. Learning from past mistakes would be beneficial, especially as some of these groups are already beginning to make the same old errors that trapped the earlier house church movement. Secondly, some of the published books that touch on this subject ( Streams of Renewal, Peter Hocken, Restoring the Kingdom, Andrew Walker etc.) while valuable, have a few wrong perspectives, many gaps and insufficient focus on 70s house-churches. Finally, there are many current blogs and articles on the internet which receive great applause but which are hopelessly mistaken on factual matters and which draw very false conclusions. Some, written by certain influential women, even spell leader’s names wrongly, mistake sons for fathers, get important dates wrong and completely misrepresent authors, failing to understand their thesis. This ought to be remedied. So for these, and other, reasons I have decided to give my ‘tuppence- worth’. What are my qualifications for this? Well the first thing is that I was there. I was converted in the winter of 1970-71, initially being closely related to Campus Crusade for Christ, but within several months was worshipping in a newly established house-church on the South Coast. -

It is like a mustard seed . ” —MARK 4:30-32 The Mustard Seed Foundation is a Christian family foundation established in 1983 under the leadership of Dennis W. Bakke and Eileen Harvey Bakke. The Foundation was created as an expression of their desire to be faithful stewards of the financial resources entrusted to them, to bring together the Christian members of their extended families into common ministry, and to advance the Kingdom of God. The Foundation provides grants to churches and Christian organizations worldwide that are engaged in Christian ministry including outreach, discipleship, and economic empowerment. The Foundation also awards scholarships to Christians pursuing advanced educational degrees in preparation for leadership roles in both the Church and society. All directors and staff of the Mustard Seed Foundation are committed followers of Jesus Christ and affirm the Lausanne Covenant. Not only is such a testimony a cause for praise, but where the Church has declined in zeal and faithfulness, it may be a means of revival and recovery. “Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen…”. In an address, given on 17th March, 2012 at the South-West Ministers’ Fraternal at Beacon Park Baptist Church, Plymouth, Mr Francis ‘Mick’ Harris recounted the vital spirituality of Christian believers in the 1950’s, compared with the spiritual desolations and howling wasteland now seen in most of the churches today, and, in so doing, has done faithful service to the cause of Christ in the world. As the title suggests, he contrasts the vapid form of ‘New Evangelicalism’ of today with the solid ‘Old Evangelicalism’ of yesteryear, viz. his own generation. While not suggesting that all that was done then in worship was as one might have wished, this address seeks to show the remarkable drift that has occurred from a relatively God-fearing, doctrinally sound Church, that held to a providentially preserved Bible, to one which has, in practice, generally removed “the ancient landmark” and left the “old paths” given to us by the Lord of the Church in Holy Scripture. -

ABSTRACT Prayer ministry evolved from John Wimber’s five-step model for healing prayer. The one-to-one encounter practised in ministry time was the third part of the threefold structure in a Wimber Vineyard event. Wimber’s personal history included conversion in his late twenties, church leadership, and knowledge of church growth. He drew on colleagues to build a theology of worldviews, the kingdom of God, phenomena and experiences, and the supernatural. This thesis argues that using his undoubted charisma he profoundly influenced Wimber Vineyard communities, who take every opportunity to engage in prayer ministry. Wimber, often using his characteristic rhetoric taught that observable signs, phenomena and manifestations occurring during prayer ministry could be understood by the participants to signify the presence, activity and power of God. -

But it is also a very challenging book. Therefore I do not advise anybody to read it who desires to remain in cosy isolation. The central figure of the book is the Holy Spirit and its purpose is to call the Church to a new understanding of the need for true community—a community in which we are prepared to share our talents, our possessions, and our home. My reason for writing this foreword is that I have had personal experience of the community described in these pages. Eighteen months ago Graham Pulkingham lectured to the clergy and lay people of my Diocese. When the lectures had been given, he came to tell me he believed that the Holy Spirit was calling him to come to Britain and to work in my Diocese.
