A Simple Critique of Dominionism
A simple critique of Dominionism There are several varieties of Dominionism flourishing today; some in conservative circles, other more extreme versions amongst Charismatics. What is Dominionism? It is the idea that the church will become so powerful that, in one way or another, will dominate the world; usually the idea is of a Christian world government. Now Dominionism is usually associated with a postmillennial eschatology; that is, a belief that Christ will return after a prolonged golden age of the church (which may or may not be 1,000 years long). However, not every postmillennialist is a Dominionist. Some Puritans held postmillennial views that supposed the church would grow increasingly in numbers and influence and effect an age of righteousness in society before the Lord returned; but they, mostly, did not teach that the church would rule the world. Reformed Dominion theology Reconstructionism The modern Reformed version of Dominionist ideas is called ‘Reconstructionism’ or ‘Theonomy’ and is taught by people like Rousas Rushdoony (now deceased), Gary DeMar, Gary North, David Chilton and Greg Bahnsen. It is a development of American Calvinism arising out of Reformed Presbyterianism. ‘Reconstructionism’ insists that the Bible (particularly the OT) must be applied to all areas of life and society reconstructed to obey this command. ‘Theonomy’ (from theos = God and nomos = law) refers to the idea that the civil laws of OT Israel are normative in all societies for all time, including death for adultery and homosexuality. The believer must keep the whole Mosaic Law to be sanctified and the civil law aspects are to be applied by the civil rulers. -

Empowering People to Change the World The One Thousand Year Reign of Christ Steve Holt © Steve Holt | TheRoad.org The One Thousand Year Reign of Christ Prayer • All of us are called to pray: “Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” • Jesus wants us to request the kingdom on earth in our prayers. • We are longing for order, stability, joy and peace. But guess what church? It will not completely happen until Christ returns and Satan is cast into the Lake of Fire. • In chapter 20 we are gazing into the Kingdom Age, the 1000 year reign of Christ. o What is the kingdom of God? In the Greek it means “the rule and reign of Christ.” o This will be an earthly utopia in which God’s will, rule and reign comes from heaven to the earth. o This Kingdom Age is described as being for 1000 years and is mentioned 6 times. o The Latin phrase is “millennium.” The word millennium is not in the Bible. o The Greek word is chilia meaning, for 1000 years, and the church is divided on this issue. Three positions on this issue are held by reputable scholars on all sides of the issue: 1. The A-millennial position- this position does not believe that there will be a literal thousand year reign of Christ. © Steve Holt | TheRoad.org !2 a. This view interprets Old Testament prophecies of a millennium as being fulfilled spiritually now in the church today. -

FAITH FOR AN IDEOLOGICAL AGE THE MORAL AND RELIGIOUS IDEAS OF SEMYON FRANK AND FRANK BUCHMAN PHILIP BOOBBYER* INTRODUCTION The challenge of secular ideology in recent centuries has given rise to various forms of religious humanism that have sought to synthesise a Christian per- spective with social and political concerns. In the mid-20th century, religious thinkers sought alternatives to fascism, communism and materialistic capital- ism, as well as calling for reconciliation and reconstruction in a war-torn world. Two contrasting, yet at the same time intriguingly similar figures, the Russian philosopher, Semyon Liudvigovich Frank (1877-1950), and the American spiritual leader, Frank Buchman (1878-1961), are the focus of this study. Although from a Jewish background, Semyon Frank was a convert to Orthodoxy. One of Russia’s so-called “legal Marxists”, he became a promi- nent intellectual opponent of revolutionary socialism, and was amongst the elite group of thinkers exiled from the USSR in 1922 on the so-called “phi- losophy steamer”.1 In exile he warned of the threats to Western democracy from both communism and materialism, and formulated, particularly in the 1940s, a social and political philosophy rooted in religious principles.2 Frank Buchman, the founder of the movement known as the Oxford Group and then Moral Re-Armament, came from a very different background. Born into a Lutheran, Pennsylvania Dutch family, he was shaped by the culture of East Coast American evangelism, as well as the Keswick movement. -

It does this through defining of Holy Spirit terms, a study on the Holy Spirit in John, and word studies on different words throughout John. The conclusion of the paper shows that the Holy Spirit could not indwell the disciples before the glorification of Jesus and gives evidence to show why this could not occur. The Historical Denial of the Free Offer Modern Calvinist leaders who teach the free offer usually claim that they have support from historic Reformed theology. This is false. They frequently claim that Calvin supports their position and that the chief Reformed standards justify their claims. All this is false also. Historic Calvinism, both in its accepted standards and as expressed by its main theologians, denies the free offer; indeed, it would recognise the teaching of modern free offer preachers as Amyraldism, and condemn it as error. Now such is the lack of knowledge on these matters amongst today’s churchgoers that my claims here must be evidenced. I am happy to comply with this to demonstrate the truth. This paper is written to show what the foremost Reformed standards and theologians teach regarding the free offer. What is the free offer? The free offer is the teaching that: 1. God has a good intent to reprobates. 2. God loves all men without exception. 3. God desires, and even wills, the salvation of all men. 4. God gives grace to all men to some degree. To this the following is at least implied: 1. The atonement of Christ is universal in scope; he died for all. 2. Conversion is conditioned upon the will of the sinner. The Arminian basis of this theology is plain to see. Where does this come from? This teaching was once restricted to those who followed the school of Moses Amyraut (or Amyrald, 1596-1664) who sought to unite the universalism of Lutherans with the sovereign particularity of Calvinists. -

Packer's introduction to a 1958 reprint of John Owen's, The Death of Death in the Death of Christ (Banner of Truth: London) The Death of Death in the Death of Christ (Owen Works, X:139:148) is a polemical piece, designed to show among other things, that the doctrine of universal redemption is unscriptural and destructive of the gospel. There are many, therefore, to whom it is not likely to be of interest. Those who see no need for doctrinal exactness and have no time for theological debates which show up divisions between so- called evangelicals may well regret its reappearance. Some may find the very sound of Owen's thesis so shocking that they will refuse to read his book at all, so passionate a thing is prejudice, and so proud are we of our theological shibboleths. But it is hoped that this classic may find itself readers of a different spirit. There are signs today of a new upsurge of interest in the theology of the Bible: a new readiness to test traditions, to search the Scriptures and to think through the faith. It is to those who share this readiness that Owen's treatise is now offered, in the belief that it will help us in one of the most urgent tasks facing evangelical Christendom today - the recovery of the gospel. -

David Naugle ~ Dallas Baptist University Center for Informed Faith G5 ~ Houston, Texas November 7, 2009 "Calvinism and Baptists—Friends or Foes?" Thank you, Dr. Timothy George. It is a distinct honor for me to participate in this discussion with you, and I thank Dr. Denison for this marvelous opportunity. For my prepared remarks, Dr. Denison has asked me to do two basic things: First, he has asked me to “demonstrate” the arguments typically opposed to classical soteriological Calvinism. Second, he has graciously invited me to set forth my own perspectives on the matter of Calvinism as I see it. So I proceed to my first task, to “demonstrate,” and I take it, neither as a scientist or lawyer, but perhaps as an accountant would, the arguments often marshaled against the Calvinistic doctrines of sovereign grace. Seven complaints that adversaries often raise against Calvinism came to mind and they are these: 1. Calvinism lopsidedly emphasizes the sovereignty of God to the neglect of His other attributes, especially His love and goodness, thereby neglecting the time-honored centerpiece of the Protestant Reformation on justification 1 by faith. 1 If we understand God in His simplistic totality as a whole and not emphasize one aspect of His being at the expense of another, we should regard God as simultaneously and completely sovereign and just, and also loving and good. The Scriptures say so. Regarding sovereignty and justice, Psalm 103: 19 states: “The Lord has established His throne in the heavens//And His sovereignty (or kingdom) rules over all.” Deuteronomy 32: 4 adds: “The Rock! His work is perfect//For all His ways are just//A God of faithfulness and without injustice//Righteous and upright is He.” Similar teachings are found in Romans 2:11; 1 Timothy 1: 17; Revelation 1: 8. -

LeFavor Unto the Thousandth Generation Contrary to popular belief, eschatology drives, or at least affects in large measure, one’s evangelical beliefs and efforts. For example, millions of professing Christians believe in a rapture which envisions an escape from tribulation. They ask: How could God allow His church to suffer? Such thinking leaves God’s people unprepared for trials and, for the most part, socially irresponsible. However, Christ tells us to expect tribulation (Jn 16:33) and even rejoice in it (Mt 5:12; cf. 1 Pet 4:12). Another prominent error in the church, which correlates to and is driven by rapture theology, presents us with a separate saving program for the ethnic nation of Israel, leading many Christians, in large measure, to fall short in their evangelistic efforts to Jews. The purpose of this study is threefold: First, to confront issues like these with biblical truth and demonstrate from biblical studies, church history and systematic theology that the phrase “Great Tribulation” is a technical term referring to the end time trial which has already been set in motion by Christ’s first advent and will culminate with His second advent (Acts 14:22; 1 Cor 11:25; Rev 7:14).
