The British House Church Movement Of The 1970s And its connection with the emergence of the Restoration Movement I have avoided writing anything on this for decades, partly because I had many more important things to write about. However, several hundred articles and books later perhaps I should now give this some attention for several reasons. The first is that there appears to be the beginnings of a sovereign move of God to establish new, informal house churches in America, Australia and England. Learning from past mistakes would be beneficial, especially as some of these groups are already beginning to make the same old errors that trapped the earlier house church movement. Secondly, some of the published books that touch on this subject ( Streams of Renewal, Peter Hocken, Restoring the Kingdom, Andrew Walker etc.) while valuable, have a few wrong perspectives, many gaps and insufficient focus on 70s house-churches. Finally, there are many current blogs and articles on the internet which receive great applause but which are hopelessly mistaken on factual matters and which draw very false conclusions. Some, written by certain influential women, even spell leader’s names wrongly, mistake sons for fathers, get important dates wrong and completely misrepresent authors, failing to understand their thesis. This ought to be remedied. So for these, and other, reasons I have decided to give my ‘tuppence- worth’. What are my qualifications for this? Well the first thing is that I was there. I was converted in the winter of 1970-71, initially being closely related to Campus Crusade for Christ, but within several months was worshipping in a newly established house-church on the South Coast. -

ABSTRACT Prayer ministry evolved from John Wimber’s five-step model for healing prayer. The one-to-one encounter practised in ministry time was the third part of the threefold structure in a Wimber Vineyard event. Wimber’s personal history included conversion in his late twenties, church leadership, and knowledge of church growth. He drew on colleagues to build a theology of worldviews, the kingdom of God, phenomena and experiences, and the supernatural. This thesis argues that using his undoubted charisma he profoundly influenced Wimber Vineyard communities, who take every opportunity to engage in prayer ministry. Wimber, often using his characteristic rhetoric taught that observable signs, phenomena and manifestations occurring during prayer ministry could be understood by the participants to signify the presence, activity and power of God. -

1 A Catholic Reflection on the New Charismatic Churches An Initial Attempt at an Ecclesial Discernment Peter Hocken Paper presented at the EPCRA conference in Riga, Latvia, Nov. 2-5, 2011 I begin with some preliminary comments. First, terminological. In the 1970s when a charismatic movement outside the existing churches was clearly developing, it was often called “non- denominational”. Today in Britain this term is rarely used, and people speaks of the “new churches” or the “new charismatic churches”. I will follow this usage, as it both accurate and simple to use. Second, this phenomenon of the new charismatic churches is now a massive worldwide occurrence. It has spread very rapidly, it is very varied in its manifestations, but there remains an evident commonality between all those groupings described by this label. This category is most clear in Europe and in North America, where the new charismatic churches are clearly different from the Pentecostal and from denominational renewal. As to the other continents, my impression is that this category retains a validity, but there are groupings that sometimes call themselves Pentecostal and sometimes charismatic. A third preliminary observation is that it is more difficult to make accurate statements about this sector globally, as the relevant scholarly literature is rather thin. As yet there are no scholarly works studying this phenomenon globally or even continentally. The countries with the most reliable data available are Britain (the works of Andrew Walker1 and William Kay2) and Ghana (the writings of Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu3). FF Bosworth and the Pentecostal Pursuit of the Supernatural
ABSTRACT Living in Bible Times: F.F. Bosworth and the Pentecostal Pursuit of the Supernatural Christopher J. Richmann, Ph.D. Chairperson: C. Douglas Weaver, Ph.D. This study examines American pentecostalism using the healing evangelist F.F. Bosworth as an interpretive lens. Bosworth’s formative experiences, long-running success, and influence on pentecostal culture situate him as a representative leader. Yet his resistance to majority doctrine and lack of durable denominational ties challenges traditional definitions of pentecostalism, driving to the conclusion that pentecostal identity lies in the pursuit of the supernatural inherited from the nineteenth-century holiness movement rather than in doctrinal markers or connections to the Azusa Street revival. Bosworth’s life story structures the dissertation, providing the most comprehensive biography of Bosworth to date. Experiences with Methodist revivalism, divine healing, and spirit-baptism reveal Bosworth as a typical pentecostal leader-in-the- making. Like numerous influential pentecostals, Bosworth had no significant connections to the Azusa Street revival. His early ministry and facilitation of a crucial revival in Dallas in 1912 established him as a leader in the young pentecostal movement, and his work with the Assemblies of God placed him in the mainstream who sought organizational stability for pentecostalism. In 1918, Bosworth publically rejected the tongues evidence doctrine, forcing his departure from the Assemblies of God. But his subsequent fame as a healing evangelist and the impact of his Christ the Healer (1924) demonstrate that he continued to represent and shape the supernaturalist impulse of pentecostalism. And while Bosworth’s British- Israel teaching was widely disparaged by full gospel believers, this teaching was embraced by many influential early pentecostals. -

The stones of the sanctuary are scattered at the head of every street. The precious sons of Zion, valuable as fine gold, how they are regarded as clay pots, the work of the hands of the potter!" Lam 4:1-2 Twice already it has happened: the stones of God's precious Temple, the place of His dwelling, have been scattered and broken. The gold, so lovingly placed in the Temple by those devoted to God, has been stolen, melted, remade into jewellry and trinkets. What a symbol of the corruption and fate of God's people! Once pure, unmixed and devoted to God alone, they shone out as something sacred and special. But when they turned their minds and hearts to other things - pagan gods, sensuality, the accession of land, and the desire for power and dominion over others - when these things corrupted the worshippers in God's Temple, it led unerringly to their downfall. Those whom the Old Testament people of God trusted to enrich their lives became instead the plunderers of their Temple, the instruments of their exile. The stones of the Temple were torn down and scattered, and the "living stones" of the Temple were also scattered, separated, enslaved and exiled far from home. The Temple Plundered Now it's happening again! We are witnessing the plunder of God's Living Temple, the Church. It is not a day of revival, as some would have you believe, but a dark day of corruption and the scattering of the stones. -

The Charismatic Movement Is a Failure
The Charismatic Movement is a Failure I have written on the failings of the Charismatic Movement (CM) many times and exposed its heresies and bad practices. However, there is growing evidence today that many members of Charismatic churches (especially in America) are disenchanted and reconsidering their position. Now is a good time to produce a paper showing why the movement is a complete failure and a disastrous problem. I will endeavour to keep this to generalities; a paper dissecting their false doctrines, messy history and practices in detail would require many books (see my book, Charismatic Catastrophe for one example). Note that I use the term CM sometimes to speak of the specific Charismatic Movement that emerged from 1960 onwards, but at other times it is an abbreviation (for brevity) for both the CM and the Pentecostal Movement which spawned it. Historical background You can find histories of the CM in many books and websites (or my book, The Origins of Pentecostalism ), so we do not need to rehash details here. The scandal of Pentecostalism The origins of Pentecostalism lie in the 19 th century, American, Wesleyan frontier revivals (where all sorts of odd behaviour was manifested), 1 the increasing secular interest in the paranormal and spirits (especially in America), mixed with the excesses of the US Holiness Movement, where tongues, trances and falling down first appeared in a large scale in the modern Christian world. 2 As the Holiness Movement dwindled, so Pentecostalism increased with some important leaders switching sides (such as Maria Woodworth-Etter). When Pentecostalism began, at the beginning of the 20 th century, it was the bad sheep of Christian denominations. -
