It was a very difficult deci- sion, but I knew it would change my life altogether. I left behind my family, my friends, my dreams. The seductive quality of nuevo tango and the bandoneon play such an important role, they embody a central character in the story. Some say that the opera is a metaphor for tango and the city of Buenos Aires, with Maria herself being the personification of the tango. The surrealist plot is conveyed with the words of a narrator character and poet, El Payador, and his antithesis El Duende, an Argentinian goblin-spirit from South American mythology whose powers cause the loss of innocence. The opera, separated into two parts, first tells the story of the young Maria, her struggles on earth, and ultimate demise. The libretto states she “was born on the day God was drunk.” In the second part of the opera, we explore her existence as “Shadow Maria,” experiencing the dark underworld of Buenos Aires.

    Conociendo a fondo a Horacio Ferrer ¿Quién es Horacio Ferrer? Dentro de los famosos que viven en Recoleta, el poeta Horacio Ferrer es realmente un vecino ilustre, que vive en el Hotel Alvear, uno de los 20 hoteles más importantes del mundo. Horacio Ferrer nació en Montevideo el 2 de junio de 1933. Hijo de padre uruguayo y madre argentina, que se conocieron en un veraneo montevideano (así lo dijo Ferrer). Se quedaron a vivir en Montevideo y cuando Horacio tenía un mes, cruzaron el río en el Vapor de la Carrera, y vinieron a Buenos Aires para mostrarle su familia argentina. Desde muy pequeño ha estado conectado con la cultura y el arte y a corta edad, ya escribía versos, obras para títeres y algo después, milongas que cantaba acompañándose con guitarra. Un tío materno le enseñó a sacar tangos "de oído" y también fue el encargado de hacerle conocer la noche porteña. Sus primeros tangos surgieron a comienzos de los '50. En 1954 fue el fundador del Club de la Guardia Nueva, a partir del cual conoció a Troilo y a Piazzolla. Tras abandonar sus estudios de arquitectura ingresó como redactor a los suplementos del matutino montevideano "El Día", y por pedido de Troilo escribió La última grela. En 1967 graba los poemas de su "Romancero canyengue" para el sello argentino independiente Trova, acompañado por la guitarra de Agustín Carlevaro. Ese disco provoca que Piazzolla lo invite a escribir juntos, lo que harán intensamente hasta 1973. Así surge, como primer gran fruto, la operita "María de Buenos Aires", que en 1968 estrenan, en la sala Planeta, de Buenos Aires, Piazzolla con su orquesta de diez músicos, las voces de Héctor de Rosas y Amelita Baltar, y el propio Ferrer como recitante en el papel de El Duende.

LA POÉTICA DEL TANGO EN MARÍA DE BUENOS AIRES CAROLINA MOLINA FERNÁNDEZ Universidad de Extremadura Resumen Este artículo propone una lectura de María de Buenos Aires, una particular ópera que compusieron en 1968 el escritor uruguayo Horacio Ferrer y el músico argentino Astor Piazzolla. Desde los presupuestos de la Literatura Comparada, se indaga en los vínculos de la música y la palabra a partir de las diversas soluciones estilísticas de la obra. Tras una aproximación a la dualidad de sus estrategias musicales (ritmos binarios, acordes clá- sicos y disonancias contemporáneas…), se revisan las imágenes sacroprofanas y algunos de los procedimientos que «dibujan» con palabras lo expresado por la música. A modo de poética, el argumento de la ópera pretende legitimar esa peculiar manifestación cul- tural que es el tango; por ello el artículo pone especial atención en subrayar el modo en que se hermanan la alta esfera operística, con sus textos literarios y codificadas armonías, y el mundo arrabalero de una música «popular». Abstract This paper proposes a particular reading of María de Buenos Aires, an opera play com- posed by uruguayan writer Horacio Ferrer and Argentinian musician Astor Piazzolla in 1968. From the perspective of comparative literatures, links between music and language are researched into according to different stylistic arrangements in the play. After ap- proaching duality in its musical strategies (binary rhythms, classic beats, and contemporary dissonances), sacred/profane images are revised.

    Nota biográfica de Horacio Ferrer Poeta, recitador, historiador. Nace en Montevideo el 2 de junio de 1933, hijo de Alicia de Ezcurra, cantante lírica, argentina nacida en Buenos Aires en 1896 y de Horacio Ferrer Pérez, brillante docente y educador uruguayo nacido en Montevideo en 1907. Estudia ingeniería, arquitectura, dibujo, teatro y bandoneón. Estrena con versos y música suyos El tango del alba; en ciclos de la radiofonía oficial inicia novedosamente el estudio de los estilos del tango; inaugura el canal 5 de TV del estado recibiendo el premio Ariel al mejor programa de 1962 por su serie Apuntes e imágenes para una historia del tango; publica en libro Cronicón canyengue de Fray Milonga cuentos publicados en el diario “El Pais”; graba en disco en Buenos Aires para “Trova” sus poemas del Romancero canyengue con la guitarra de Agustín Carlevaro, ambos libros con una estética vanguardista del lunfardo y el español ciudadano del Río de la Plata. Por el Romancero canyengue, su primer libro de poemas, Astor Piazzolla lo elige para colaborar con él durante veinte años, revolucionando el tango cantado en temas, personajes y estética. “Lo que Piazzolla es a la música del tango, Horacio Ferrer lo es a la poesía” ha dicho José Gobello. La operita María de Buenos Aires, representada hasta hoy en cien ciudades de treinta países, y el oratorio El pueblo Joven, estrenado con Susana Rinaldi en Jerusalem, más los tangos Balada para un loco —estimado entre los tangos más célebres de todos los tiempos— Balada para mi muerte, Preludio para el año 3001, Preludio para la Cruz del Sur, El gordo triste, Oblívion, Fábula para Gardel, Pepe Cascabel, Libertango, Soledad, Milonga del trovador, Mi loco bandoneón, Bocha, La última grela, Canción de las venusinas, Existir, Chiquilín de Bachín, son parte de sus setenta títulos con música de Piazzolla de perdurable éxito mundial.

Modern Tango World has survived many trials and tribulations. But, we are still here. I am very happy to say that the audience for modern tango music has substantially grown over the past two years. Modern music is now accepted as part of most of the major events, although it is still called ‘alternative’ and confused with ‘non-tango’. It has become common practice to play an 80-20% mix of ‘traditional’ vs. ‘non-traditional’ at many milongas. At festivals, there are often seperate rooms or evenings set aside for ‘non-traditional’ tango. All of this has led me to believe that we do truly live in the Golden Age of tango. Tango has spread around the world in the same way that it did during La Guardia Vieja in the 1920s & 30s. New tango songs are being written in almost every country. Old songs are being given new orchestrations. Modern pop songs are being revised and turned into tangos. It’s happening all around the world. The Internet and Facebook have given tango a worldwide platform to stand on. Contemporary tango dance performers and dancers have found audiences almost everywhere in the world.

Función actual Director de la Orquesta del Tango de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, Dirección General de Música, Ministerio de Cultura. Actividad en el sector privado Su nombre y el del tango de Buenos Aires están asociados desde principios de los años 70’ a figuras como Horacio Salgán, Astor Piazzolla, Enrique Francini o Héctor Stamponi. Desde los años 80 también a los proyectos de Astor Piazzolla y Horacio Ferrer en la ópera “María de Buenos Aires” y a Juan Carlos Copes con el Ballet Argentino en numerosos escenarios de USA, Centroamérica, Brasil, Uruguay, España, Francia, Dinamarca, Suecia, Noruega, Finlandia y Japón. Realizó una importante actividad en Buenos Aires, siendo hitos memorables su presentación junto a la orquesta de Frank Sinatra bajo la dirección de Don Costa y su notable participación en la película “Sur” del director argentino Fernando “Pino” Solanas junto al cantante Roberto Goyeneche. Durante los años 1988 y 1991, en extensas giras por todo Japón, presenta su espectáculo “Tanguísimo” con su orquesta el “Octeto de Buenos Aires”. Desde los 90 se incorpora al circuito de la música clásica internacional interpretando como solista piezas del repertorio para bandoneón y orquesta como el “Concierto de Bandoneón” o los “Tres Tangos” de Astor PIazzolla, junto a numerosas orquestas y directores en los escenarios de Inglaterra, Suiza, Austria, Alemania, España, Francia, Canadá y USA, así como también en el Teatro Colón de Buenos Aires. En diciembre del 97’ realiza una importante gira en USA presentando el disco “Soul of the Tango “, sobre música de Astor Piazzolla bajo el nombre de “Yo-Yo Ma and Friend” en Seattle, Los Ángeles, Miami, Washington y New York, junto al violoncellista Yo-Yo Ma.
