  • The Iqta' System of Iraq Under the Buwayhids Tsugitaka Sato
THE IQTA' SYSTEM OF IRAQ UNDER THE BUWAYHIDS TSUGITAKA SATO* In 334 A. H. (946 A.D.), having established his authority in Baghdad, Mu'izz al-Dawla granted iqta's in the Sawad to his commanders, his asso- ciates, and his Turks. This is the formation of the so-called "military" iqta' system in the Islamic history. The appearance of the military iqta's brought about not only the evolution of the Islamic state, but also the transformation of the Iraqi society during the 10-11th centuries and of the other countries in the following periods. Nizam al-Mulk understood this as the change from bistagan (cash pay) to iqta',(1) while al-Maqrizi described as the change from 'ata' to iqta' in the same meaning.(2) As for the iqta' system under the Buwayhids, H. F. Amedroz first translated the Miskawayh's text into English with annotations,(3) and then C. H. Becker tried to realize the iqta' system in the history of 'Lehen' from the early Islamic period to the Ottoman Turks.(4) A. A, al-Duri, who studied the economic history of the Buwayhid Iraq, made clear the character of iqta' comparing it with milk (private land) and waqf, though the reality of iqta' holding remained to be investigated in future.(5) On the other hand, Cl. Cahen published the general survey of iqta' in the history of the Islamic land holding, which gave us usefull informations concerning the right and obligation of soldiers, and the fall of peasants by way of himaya (protection) and the loan at high interest.(6) We also find the general description of iqta' in the study of H.

Revisiting the Role of the Armenians in the Battle of Mantzikert by Antonios Vratimos Reti Medievali Rivista, 21, 1 (2020) <http://www.retimedievali.it> Firenze University Press Reti Medievali Rivista, 21, 1 (2020) <http://rivista.retimedievali.it> ISSN 1593-2214 © 2020 Firenze University Press DOI 10.6092/1593-2214/6790 Revisiting the Role of the Armenians in the Battle of Mantzikert by Antonios Vratimos It is well known that after Romanos Diogenes’ sound defeat at Mantzikert in 1071 A.D., the Armenians founded their own principalities in Byzantine territory. Yet, their role in the battle has not been examined systematically until now. According to Michael the Great, the patriarch of the Syrian Orthodox Church, the Armenians were the first to desert from the army. Whereas this was accepted as truth in the past, more recently historians have questioned the historicity of his statement. This study proposes to solve the problem, and concludes that the Historia of Attaleiates contains evidence that corroborates the desertion of the Armenian soldiers. Middle Ages; 11th Century; Mantzikert (battle of); Armenians; Romanos Diogenes; Tarchanei- otes/Trachaneiotes; Attaleiates; Michael the Syrian/Michael the Great. The fateful outcome of the historical encounter between Romanos Dio- genes and Alp Arslan at Mantzikert (1071 A.D.) paved the way for the expan- sion of the Seljuk Turks into Anatolia that resulted in the establishment of the sultanate of Rum. The Byzantine defeat was the sequel to the internal mach- inations of the Doukai against Diogenes. The great plethora of sources cov- ering the event is not always a benefit to an historian undertaking research.

  • Fatimid-Buyid Diplomacy During the Reign of Al-Aziz Billah
The Institute of Ismaili Studies * FÓimid-BÔyid Diplomacy During the Reign of Al-Az¯z billh (365/975- 386/996) Shainool Jiwa Abstract It is a coincidence of history that perhaps the greatest sovereign of the Fatimid dynasty, al- ‘Aziz billah, and the most powerful representative of Buyid rule, ‘Adud al-Dawla, were contemporaries. It was in the time of these two great rulers that Fatimid-Buyid diplomacy reached its high watermark. This article seeks to examine the reasons for the inception and termination of diplomacy between these two powers. Keywords Fatimid, Buyid, initiation of diplomacy, Abd al-Dawla, al-Aziz, strengthening Buyid rule, terminating the alliance Introduction The emergence of the FÓimids in North Africa ushered in a major revolution in the Islamic world. For the first time in Muslim annals, there were two rival caliphates, the active and expanding caliphate of the FÓimids and the waning authority of the `Abbsids of Baghdad, effectively controlled by their BÔyid protectors. When the FÓimids moved east to Egypt (in 358/969), interaction between these two caliphates became inevitable. It is a coincidence of history that perhaps the greatest sovereign of the FÓimid dynasty, al-`Az¯z billh, and the most powerful representative of BÔyid rule, `Aud al-Dawla (338/944-372/983), were contemporaries. It was in the time of these two great rulers that FÓimid- BÔyid diplomacy reached its high-water mark. Prior to `Aud al-Dawla's appearance on the political scene at Baghdad and after his departure from it, the other BÔyid am¯rs were too involved in interfamilial strife to have any contact – friendly or otherwise - with the FÓimid ruler al-`Az¯z.

  • Marius Canard (1888-1982): a Bio-Bibliographical Notice
MARIUS CANARD (1888-1982): A BIO-BIBLIOGRAPHICAL NOTICE BY FARHAD DAFTARY HE death in September 1982 of emeritus Professor Marius Canard, T at the ripe age of ninety-three, has taken from our midst a French savant of international eminence. A leading Islamist and an accom- plished Byzantinist, Canard was perhaps the last of that generation of French orientalists who spent the greater part of his academic career in North Africa and played a decisive role in furthering our knowledge of Islamic history and civilization. Marius Canard was born on 26 December 1888 at the small village of Dracy-Saint-Loup, in the Morvan region of central France, where his father was a schoolmaster. After completing his secondary education at the College Bonaparte in the nearby town of Autun, he enrolled at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lyon, where he earned his licence de lettres. It was there that Canard became aware of his interest in oriental languages and had his first contact with Arabic; attending the classes of Gaston Wiet (1887-1971), the then newly appointed professor of Arabic, Persian and Turkish at Lyon. Having obtained his aggrega- tion in grammar, which qualified him for a teaching career in the French state-supported secondary schools, the lycee system, M. Canard became a professor in 1913 at the Lycee de Toulon. But soon afterwards in August 1914, following the outbreak of World War I, the young Professor Canard abandoned his teaching position at Toulon and, like so many of his compatriots, enlisted in the army. He had started riding horses from an early age, thus allowing him to join the 16th cavalry regiment at Beaune.

  • Cilician Armenian Mediation in Crusader-Mongol Politics, C.1250-1350
HAYTON OF KORYKOS AND LA FLOR DES ESTOIRES: CILICIAN ARMENIAN MEDIATION IN CRUSADER-MONGOL POLITICS, C.1250-1350 by Roubina Shnorhokian A thesis submitted to the Department of History In conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada (January, 2015) Copyright ©Roubina Shnorhokian, 2015 Abstract Hayton’s La Flor des estoires de la terre d’Orient (1307) is typically viewed by scholars as a propagandistic piece of literature, which focuses on promoting the Ilkhanid Mongols as suitable allies for a western crusade. Written at the court of Pope Clement V in Poitiers in 1307, Hayton, a Cilician Armenian prince and diplomat, was well-versed in the diplomatic exchanges between the papacy and the Ilkhanate. This dissertation will explore his complex interests in Avignon, where he served as a political and cultural intermediary, using historical narrative, geography and military expertise to persuade and inform his Latin audience of the advantages of allying with the Mongols and sending aid to Cilician Armenia. This study will pay close attention to the ways in which his worldview as a Cilician Armenian informed his perceptions. By looking at a variety of sources from Armenian, Latin, Eastern Christian, and Arab traditions, this study will show that his knowledge was drawn extensively from his inter-cultural exchanges within the Mongol Empire and Cilician Armenia’s position as a medieval crossroads. The study of his career reflects the range of contacts of the Eurasian world. ii Acknowledgements This project would not have been possible without the financial support of SSHRC, the Marjorie McLean Oliver Graduate Scholarship, OGS, and Queen’s University.

120 TŐSÉR MÁRTON KÉTFRONTOS HARC: BIZÁNC ÉS A BESENYŐ ÉS SZELDZSUK TÁMADÁSOK A XI. SZÁZAD KÖZEPÉN Fighting on two fronts: Byzantium and the Pecheneg and Seljuk attacks in the mid-11th century There is a sizeable literature on the decline of the Byzantine Empire which started in the mid- 11th century, but there is hardly anything available in Hungarian on the military history references of the topic. The paper explores the causes of the decline of Byzantium and of the nomadic migration, and analyses the fightings of the mid-11th century. At the time of Basileios IIʼs death in 1025 the power of the empire was still at its peak, it looked as if nothing could shake its position. By Constantine IXʼs death in 1054 the empire had seriously weakened – the fall is generally associated with Manzikert (1071), but in fact the unsuccessful battles in the Balkans against the Pechenegs (1048–1053) was already an ill omen. The great empire, previously thought to have been unshakable, was not able to defeat the nomadic peoples settling in its territory. This fact brought about a loss of prestige as well as a serious financial loss, for both the western and eastern armies of the empire made great sacrifices in the fighting. It was at the same time that the Seljuks appeared at the eastern borders, whose incursions caused serious damages in the region, too. Later on the Seljuks lead raids further to the west and their settling in Anatolia later was possible partly because of the fact that the Byzantine borders were left open earlier.

In preparing the thirteen volumes of the Catalogue of Oriental and Indian Coins I was frequently at a loss for chronological lists. Prinsep’s Useful Tables, edited by Edward Thomas, was the only trustworthy English authority I could refer to, and it was often at fault. I generally found it necessaiy to search for correct names and dates in the Arabic historians, and the lists of dynasties prefixed to the descriptions of their coins in my Catalogue were usually the result of my own researches in many Oriental authorities. It has often been suggested to me that a reprint of these lists would be useful to students, and now that the entire Catalogue is published I have collected the tables and genealogical trees in the present volume. : VI PREFACE The work is, however, much more than a reprint of these tables. I have not only verified the dates and pedigrees by reference to the Arabic sources and added a number of dynasties which were not represented in the Catalogue of Coins, but I have endeavoured to make the lists more intelligible by prefixing to each a brief historical introduction.

  • Vernon, C., 'Dressing for Succession in Norman Italy: the Mantle of King
1 Vernon, C., ‘Dressing for Succession in Norman Italy: The Mantle of King Roger II’, Al- Masāq: Journal of the Medieval Mediterranean, 2018. DOI: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/09503110.2018.1551699 The subject of this article is the mantle of the kings of Sicily, now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Made in Palermo in the 1130s, it is often known as the mantle of Roger II. Following his coronation in 1130, King Roger II saw the need to ensure the succession of his sons. As part of his strategy to consolidate dynastic succession, Roger invested his sons with important titles in the mainland regions of the kingdom. This article has two parts: the first part discusses the materials used to make the mantle, the journeys they took to reach Sicily and the diplomatic and commercial relationships necessary to acquire them. The second part argues that the mantle may have been made for the investiture ceremonies of the king’s sons and examines how the materials and their exoticism shaped the ceremonial meaning of the garment. Key words: textiles, Palermo, Sicily, investiture, silk, pearls, gold, Byzantine, Norman. So many medieval textiles have arrived in the twenty-first century in fragments, often translucent, colours faded and edges frayed, demanding that we take imaginative leaps to see them as they once were. Rarely do we encounter a medieval garment in such good condition as the mantle of the kings of Sicily (figure 1). Even reproduced in poor-quality images it is arresting, surprising and impressive. In person, in its home in Vienna it elicits awe and wonder.
