Originally lead by vocalist Robert Kampf, DESPAIR issued their debut album, History of Hate, in 1988, but he exited the band before their next full-length so he could concentrate his energy on Century Media, the future label powerhouse he founded that year. The group then hired former APOSTASY vocalist Andreas Henschel as Kampf’s replacement and released their critically acclaimed sophomore full-length, 1990’s Decay of Humanity. ARTIST: DESPAIR TITLE: Beyond All Reason By the time the band went into Tonstudio Mohrmann in Bochum, Germany to record their next album, LABEL: Divebomb Records guitarist Waldemar Sorychta emerged as a force to reckon with, in front and behind the scenes. The CAT#: DIVE108-2 guitarist seized the producer reigns on 1991’s Beyond All Reason, a well-rounded onslaught of thrash and FORMAT: CD more traditionally minded heavy metal that is the finest moment in their discography. As fierce as Beyond GENRE: Thrash Metal All Reason proved to be, it was sadly their swan song. Satan’s Gift)—DEATHROW’s early years laid a foundation of relentless Teutonic thrash. In 1988, however, guitarist Thomas Priebe was replaced with Uwe Osterlehner, which ushered in a much more technical and dynamic approach for the group’s third album, Deception Ignored. ARTIST: DEATHROW Four years later, having severed ties with Noise Records, 1992’s Life Beyond became DEATHROW’s lone TITLE: Life Beyond outing as a part of the growing roster of West Virginia Records (run by Andy and Sabina Classen from Holy LABEL: Divebomb Records Moses). Having decided that Deception Ignored may have been overly complex in hindsight, the quartet CAT#: DIVE110-2 opted to streamline their approach for album number four: injecting Deception Ignored’s intricacy and FORMAT: CD melody with a dose of focused, aggressive thrash from their early roots—a fitting end to the “second GENRE: Thrash Metal phase” of DEATHROW’s career. BOX LOT: 30 SRLP: $18.98 Now, nearly 25 years later, Divebomb Records is proud to present this expanded reissue of DEATHROW’s UPC: 711576011023 EXPORT: No Restrictions Life Beyond—fully remastered by Jamie King at The Basement Recording, and including a slew of archival photographs direct from the band plus full lyrics as well as a brand new essay by Andrew Westerhouse (of TRACK LIST: NoEcho.net) with participation from guitarist, Uwe Osterlehner. Soldiering on through a revolving door of guitar players across three demos, the group solidified its core lineup of Mario Atencio (bass/vocals), Cris McCarthy and Tom Perry (guitars), and Patrick Short (drums) leading up to their sole full-length offering, From The Darkest Depths Of The Imagination. ARTIST: SILENT SCREAM Originally released in 1992 by Tombstone Records, From The Darkest Depths Of The Imagination’s eight tracks TITLE: From The Darkest Depth Of The put forth a meaty, midpaced style of thrash—reminiscent of other high-level early-’90s gems such as Imagination (Deluxe Edition) DEVASTATION’s Idolatry and DARK ANGEL’s Time Does Not Heal. This is perhaps no coincidence, as the LABEL: Divebomb Records sessions were produced by none other than the legendary Gene Hoglan of Dark Angel—who also contributed CAT#: DIVE111-2 lyrics and a guitar solo to two of the album’s choice cuts. FORMAT: CD Death/Thrash Metal GENRE: Divebomb Records is now excited to present From The Darkest Depths Of The Imagination in a deluxe BOX LOT: 30 edition format: newly remastered by Jamie King and featuring their first demo,Thanatopsis; as well as a SRLP: $18.98 UPC: 711576011122 retrospective interview, plus unseen photos from the band’s archives. PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

I initially considered that being so close to members of the band for years that have spanned from before Pagan Altar was formed to the present day would not make me objective enough in my approach. Having been an ex-drummer with the band, in fact the first, an association that I am extremely proud of, I suppose my natural tendencies and inclinations would lean towards looking at the band through rose coloured glasses. I have therefore tried to observe and analyse the whole situation from a totally detached viewpoint, but human nature being what it is, some of my own opinions and observations have probably crept in and become incorporated within some of the analytical assumptions. I have refrained from mentioning myself in the Bio, this is not due to any pretence at a misguided view of modesty that I might have but because I genuinely feel that any major achievements made by the band were after my departure.

  • Anders Nyström, Katatonia, on „The Fall of Hearts“
Anders Nyström, Katatonia, on „The Fall of Hearts“, new band-members and touring plans »It’s a play between light and dark, if you don’t have the light, you won’t see the dark« Prior to the release of the tenth Katatonia album The Fall of Hearts on the 20th of May, I had the chance to speak to guitar player Anders Nyström about the recordings and the songwriting of the album, new band members and touring plans of the swedish kings of dark melancholic progressive metal. Zur deutschen Übersetzung des Interviews Anders, the upcoming Katatonia album „The Fall of Hearts“ will mark the first ‘fully distorted’ release since 2012’s highly acclaimed „Dead End Kings“ (excluding the live release „Last Fair Day Gone Night“, 2014). Having worked on the ‘metal-less’ 2013 re-imagining of Dead End Kings entitled Dethroned„ & Uncrowned“ (2013) and extensive subsequent acoustic tours culminating in the Live DVD release of „Sanctitude“ last year, how much has this rather long absence from fully plugged heaviness influenced the songwriting for The Fall of Hearts? I think, by doing the many „Dethroned & Uncrowned“ and „Sanctitude“ acoustic gigs and album we opened up a new door for our audience to choose, to get familiar with, to accept a new sound of Katatonia. We never tried to claim or anything that this was the indication of our new style. It was just a little side experiment to show that we have more sides than just one in Katatonia. We also could show a softer more lushy acoustic side that would still sound like Katatonia.

! Formed in 1985, by singer/bassist Mem V. Stein and guitarist Ray Mensh, EXUMER went on to release two albums in 1986 (Possessed by Fire), and 1987 (Rising from the Sea), that are regarded as some of the most cult thrash metal releases ever to come out of Germany. EXUMER was also one of the first thrash metal acts to capture exotic, foreign markets like Poland and Brazil, where their albums were domestically released in the 1980s. The subsequent tours that followed those releases secured the band live shows in front of thousands of fans and an unusually large following outside of Germany. Plagued by line-up changes and internal turmoil the band broke up in 1990, and did not perform live, with the exception in 2001 at the prestigious Wacken Open Air Festival, until 2009. Mem and Ray decided to re-activate EXUMER in 2008, and the band embarked on their first tour since 1988, where they played 5 shows in April/May of 2009. The "5 Nights of Fire Tour", took the band through Europe (Germany, Holland, Greece), and the USA, where they headlined the "Thrasho de Mayo Festival", in front of 1300 fans in Los Angeles. More live dates and tours followed in 2010 and in 2011, EXUMER completed writing and arranging material for their first new album in 24 years. The band chose Waldemar Sorychta (Grip Inc., Therion, Sodom, Moonspell, etc.), to produce their 10-track strong, hard hitting CD; Fire & Damnation. Released worldwide via Metal Blade Records in April of 2012, Fire & Damnation catapulted EXUMER back in the forefront of the international music markets and the following live assaults in 2012 & 2013; only further cemented the band's cult status among the ranks of classic thrash metal acts in the world! EXUMER has embarked on tours and festivals in Mexico, South America and Europe since the release of Fire & Damnation, and finally released their first official video clip to the title song of their latest album, shot entirely in Sao Paulo/Brazil in 2012.
