“Taxis” is a Greek word meaning “order” or “arrangement.” It is the root of “”: the science of describing species and fitting them into evolu- tionary order on the tree of life. Each of the six oil paintings in a series called taxa explores one aspect or dynamic of conservation. Each species was carefully researched. Each of the six paintings took nearly a year to com- plete. All are painted to scale, at life size, and are depicted as accurately as possible. The image used here, trade, from 2001, shows species of plants and whose wild populations are depleted by collection for legal, il- legal, and unregulated markets. In- depth study of a single species can yield a world of information: each life cycle is deeply entwined with that of others in its community. The more we learn about the intricacies of one organism and its ecosystem, the more we see the limits of our current knowledge. The more we discover, the more we comprehend our responsibility for every other living thing. Oil paintings can last for centuries. I use accuracy, attention to detail, craft, and research to send a snapshot of our current view of humans’ re- lationship to the rest of nature into the future: a modern momento mori.
