Best Laid Plans Best Laid Plans 1010TH TH ANNIVERSARYANNIVERSARY EXHIBITION EXHIBITION (2017 (2017-2018) - 2018) 10TH ANNIVERSARY EXHIBITION (2017-2018) ABOUT THE COLLECTION | Alasdair Nichol

X The first time I visited the Norwood it was after midnight, not long after ithad PRESENTS opened and following a Burns Supper which my wife Susi and I hold annually in our home in late January.

The supper is a celebration of the life and works of Scotland’s greatest poet Robert J o h n B e l l a n y Burns ( for the uninitiated, think ‘Auld Lang Syne’, ‘Best laid plans of mice and men’ M a r t i n B o y c e etc) and involves poetry reading, many toasts and the consumption of copious amounts of haggis and Scotch whisky. Naturally, due to the circumstances I was L e x B r a e s wearing my kilt when I first stepped through the doors. Susi and I became members J o h n B y r n e shortly thereafter and it has been like a second home to us ever since and the scene of many an enjoyable - occasionally raucous - evening and some memorable parties. S t e v e n C a m p b e l l

S t e p h e n C o n r o y When Alan kindly asked whether we would be interested in curating the annual exhibition - the 10th anniversary no less! - the die seemed to have been cast and the K e n C u r r i e theme was immediately apparent to us - . J e r e m y D e l l e r Not only had Alan and I both studied at Scottish art schools in the early 80’s ( H a m i s h F u lt o n and respectively) but Susi and I had met through a mutual connection to D o u g l a s G o r d o n School of Art, alma mater to many of the artists featured in the exhibition. In true Scottish Calvinist style, predestination was clearly at work. H i l l & A d a m s o n Entitled ‘Best Laid Plans’, as a nod to the aforementioned Rabbie Burns, the J i m L a mb i e exhibition features many of the leading artists to have emerged from the Scottish S t u a r t M a c k e n z i e contemporary art scene. Some with international reputations, a few past winners of the prestigious , and others better known within Scotland. Stylistically, C r a i g M u l h o l l a n d there are examples of the New Figuration associated with the of I s h b e l M y e r s c o u g h Art in the 1980’s through to more conceptual works including installations and animation as well as artworks created this year, some specifically for the exhibition. T o b y P a t e r s o n

J o n S c h u e l e r Susi and I very much hope it will entertain, inform and engage the membership of the Norwood and bring some our favorite artists to a wider audience. We plan to be on D a v i d S h r i g l e y hand on a regular basis to discuss the works on the walls and answer any questions A l i s o n W a t t that members may have.
