Students on the Move: Keeping Uprooted Kids in School

Airs Wednesday, August 14, at 8pm Like most major life transitions, moving homes has a profound and lasting impact on people’s lives. Children are often the most vulnerable, as disrupted peer relationships, stress and anxiety can impact a child’s emotional and academic development. The effects are compounded when moves are frequent or the result of instability: Research shows that the millions of children facing housing insecurity in the are more likely to struggle in school and drop out. APM reports on this in Students on the Move, the first in a series of education documentaries coming to KQED. Hear more about how housing insecurity affects children, particularly homeless children and children of migrant farmworkers, and what we can do to help them succeed in school.

Climate One: Cities for the Future

Airs Thursday, August 8, at 8pm Ask any Bay Area resident: Cities are experiencing a growth spurt. We’ve seen it in the competition for housing, skyrocketing rents, the influx of traffic and the new developments popping up left and right. It’s hard not to worry about the sustainability of this growth trend when more than half of the global population lives in urban centers and another 2.5 billion people are expected to join them there by 2050. Climate One brings us a conversation with architect Jan Gehl, who helped turn into a more pedestrian- friendly place and has influenced urban planning globally with his people-centered approach to urban design. Gehl provides insight on designing sustainable cities that can withstand the challenges of climate change and rapid population growth.
