I am a huge fan of Robert Jordan. Perused by the luscious and shameless Sularia, the mighty warrior challenges a magic-spawned menace that cannot die: the invincible Simulacrum of Albanus. From the glory of fabled Aghrapur capital of Turan, to the demon-haunted wastes of the Blasted Lands, Conan proves himself the greatest hero of a bygone era of high adventure. I feel a bit strange to read this book because I always reading ''. The Desert people are reminiscent of the Aiel, etc. The main character is unlikable. There is no depth storyline in this book. I don't really like this book. View all 9 comments. Feb 21, Michael rated it liked The Conan Chronicles 1. This is what I refer to as my "dessert reading;" the kind of pulpy, high action that I resort to after a certain hour of the night when I am just to tired to deal with the subtlties in Plutarch or Shakespeare or the histories. Given my recent readings in history, I suspect that the character of Conan invented by Robert E. Howard and continued here by Robert Jordan is a much less complex sort of human being than those who actually lived in those times. But when I've just pulled a couple of forty This is what I refer to as my "dessert reading;" the kind of pulpy, high action that I resort to after a certain hour of the night when I am just to tired to deal with the subtlties in Plutarch or Shakespeare or the histories. The Conan Chronicles 1 when I've just pulled a couple of forty hour shifts and it's closing on midnight, I am not in the mood for plots I have to guess at--give me a good formula with variations much like a good classical riff of Ravel's Bolero--and characters I have to work to understand. I'll save that for times when I am fresh, wide awake, and looking for some mental stimulation. I liked these The Conan Chronicles 1 novels: they range over a wide territory, the action keeps The Conan Chronicles 1, and the characters, if not deep, are quirky. There probably aren't any lessons to be learned here. After all, how could stories about courageous individuals trying their best to survive in a world full of greedy merchants, corrupt leaders, raving priests, mad cultists and servile minions possibly provide The Conan Chronicles 1 for those of us dealing with modern reality? Maybe I better sharpen that sword, just in case. View 2 comments. Dec The Conan Chronicles 1, Michael rated it it was amazing. Innkeeper, hast your serving wench sunk her legs The Conan Chronicles 1 a bog? It is I, Conan, that stands before you. Fetch me ale, man, or end this hour shorter by a head!! I just made that up. Hah The Conan Chronicles 1. But these stories were great. Really excellent. Apparently several writers have done them. Conan just rambles around what appears to be a fictional, fantastical, magical Babylon, kicks ass, takes what he wants, fights wizards, drinks, and hangs with hookers. And saves naked damsels from The Conan Chronicles 1 to vile de Crom! And saves naked damsels from sacrifice to vile demons sometimes. Never boring. Feb 03, Carol Storm rated it liked it. Conan actually meets a bunch of Beatnik college kids and sets them straight! Aug 17, H. I read this omnibus around the time it came out and was nonplussed. I walked back in not expecting them to be either. But Jordan is The Conan Chronicles 1 very fine storyteller. He may not quite get Conan, but his Conan is charismatic and clever, not just strong. I think I would probably have rather seen Jordan write an older Conan. That was of course a theme Jordan would return to, and you see hints of several themes that Jordan would explore much more fully in his own epic fantasy: prophecy, the twisting of rumor, politics, a battle of The Conan Chronicles 1 sexes. The romance is very much in the vein of the bodice ripper. This sort The Conan Chronicles 1 thing works much better in The Wheel of Time, where it is toned way down, there are many, many female POV characters, and the whole battle of the sexes thing is baked right into the worldbuilding. But his Conan books feature his finest prose, especially the latter books. He gets a The Conan Chronicles 1 overambitious with the vocabulary, but the results The Conan Chronicles 1 be beautiful. Mitchell also did the map for The Wheel of Time. Conan the Invincible This is the only mediocre original Conan story that Jordan wrote. Unfortunately, it was also his first. Tor got the rights to Conan and wanted to put a book out very quickly thereafter to capitalize on the movie. They were right, but Conan the Invincible really shows as a rush job. I would say skip it entirely, but the one thing it is notable for is introducing the secondary characters Karela and Hordo, each of whom appear again. Conan the Defender This was the only book The Conan Chronicles 1 remember much of from reading the first omnibus back in the late 90s. It is still my favorite book from the first omnibus, and vies with Conan the Victorious for my favorite overall of The Conan Chronicles 1 Jordan pastiches. I can even forgive Conan losing a fight to a soft nobleman with a magic sword. The cult leader who serves as the villain is a nice twist on the usual evil sorcerer, and his Khitan bodyguards were a highlight when I first read the book and a highlight now. Arrows sliced through the space where they had stood, toward the man in black. Dec 30, Chip Hunter rated it really liked it. This is a collection of three Conan books by Jordan that were originally published in the early 's. Jordan does a fair job of representing one of the all-time-favorite heroes, portraying him as the hard, no-nonsense, lover of gold and women that Robert E. Howard introduced so long ago. These stories are nothing like Jordan's later work with the epic Wheel of Time series, but they are not meant to be. Nov 05, Stephen rated it it was amazing Shelves: pulpysorcerous-swordskings-of-badassiafantasyshort-fictionsingle-author-collections, I have not read all of the stories in this collection so this review is for the stories listed below. These are the first Conan stories I have ever read and I did not go into them with really high expectations despite the great reviewsthinking they would be dated and kind of cheesy. However, given the significant influence Robert E. Howard, in general, and Conan, in particular, has had on the fantasy genre, I thought it was time I read at least a few for historical purposes. With 5. They are inventive, combine great world-building with memorable characters and are a ton The Conan Chronicles 1 fun. I plan to read them all taking breaks to read other things so the stories do not run together. I loved it and thought it was suberb. P Lovecraft Cthulu mythos. It is that "connection" that I think makes the Conan "world building" The Conan Chronicles 1 incredible. A great story and one in which Conan has a true love interest. Jan 29, Damian Dubois rated it it was amazing Shelves: By Crom! That was the easiest 5 stars The Conan Chronicles 1 have ever given to a book. The best word to describe these works? This was pure, unadulterated joy from start to finish and has probably been the most enjoyable book I've read in a long time. More, more, more please! View all 4 comments. Mar 31, Will Sargent rated it it was amazing The Conan Chronicles 1 top-of-pile. Some grumble that the collected works The Conan Chronicles 1 dodgy patch ups by Sprague du Campe, but I like it all. I love the exotic settings and Jack Vance-like magicians who must be out-thought and often lay traps for our mighty, all-conquering warrior. I don't agree that it is mysogynistic, either, as the women characters are strong and often toy with Conan's weaknesses. If one looks deeper than the contextual and necessary savagery of prehistoric man, one finds independence, personal responsibility, individual freedom, and amorality ethics from environment and perspective, not from edict. Freedom from authority, freedom from civilization, and freedom from god. Even where gods may actually exist, Conan would sooner curse them than bow to them. Conan lives with an unbridled passion and vigor that comes from tru Conan the Cimmerian presents humanity at its best. Conan lives with an unbridled passion and vigor that comes from true independence and a fearless understanding of what he is human, animal, a creature whose only true obligation is to BE. Far from being a dusty relic of the bygone age he inhabits, Conan represents a future that we are still reaching for where humanity realizes itself, its potential, and its inherent freedom. Apr 24, Isca Silurum rated it liked it. Amusing stuff. A feminist standard I imagine, read once a year to fuel the fires. Nov 11, Todd rated it really liked it. It was fun to re-read Howard after 31 years or so, and realize the Conan stories can reinvigorate, at least for a few hours, the 13 year-old-boy in all of us. Plus, where else are you going to find purple prose gems like "lizards of desolation"? Of course, after such a long haul with the brutish Cimmerian, you do realize each story is essentially the same--Conan rescues a lithe mostly naked damsel in distress from a wizard or monster or both, usually in a lost city or on some The Conan Chronicles 1 island. Nov 07, Ian Banks rated it really liked it Shelves: adventurefantasyclassicsanthology. At last - the Howard reread yields up some genuinely and consistently fabulous writing. Conan is probably Mr Howard's best character and the one he The Conan Chronicles 1 most faithfully for: there are few generic stories here, almost all feel as though they were written for the panther-like, mightily-thewed Cimmerian. The Conan Chronicles 1 only tales holding this back from 5 stars are the ones published after his death that hadn't benefitted from a rewrite or editorial opinions. These are great yarns and a barrel of fun to read. View 2 comments. May 11, Marlene rated it liked it. If you've seen the movie, Conan the Barbarian, you'll be in for a shock when you read this book. Strong and intense just like the movie; this story portrays Conan as intelligent, well versed The Conan Chronicles 1 the art of war and espionage and out to build an empire. I really liked this one. Aug 29, Graham The Conan Chronicles 1 it it was amazing Shelves: anthologyfantasypulp. The collected stories are bookended by a great little map, an examination of Conan's world by the author himself, and an afterword by Jones which ably sets the scene. A wonderfully gruesome climax finishes things off nicely. The traditional climax offers all the gory action you could wish for. It's straightforward and to the point. There's an epic The Conan Chronicles 1 in the story of a regal usurper and a desert tribe uprising. Different and fresh are the keywords I'd choose. Nothing to dislike about this one. The gory magical action is deftly described here, and the pacing never slows down for a second over the odd pages. I say unfortunately because it's a real cracker, with a different protagonist for once — the great Amalric — and plenty of interest going on. May 14, Branimir rated The Conan Chronicles 1 did not like it Recommends it for: Noone. Shelves: scifi-fi. Conan seckati. Conana, ne Kroma. Kroma boli neka stvar. Likovi su karikature.
