  • 1 This Isn't Paradise, This Is Hell: Discourse, Performance and Identity in the Hawai'i Metal Scene a Dissertation Submitte
1 THIS ISN’T PARADISE, THIS IS HELL: DISCOURSE, PERFORMANCE AND IDENTITY IN THE HAWAI‘I METAL SCENE A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE DIVISION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI‘I AT MĀNOA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN AMERICAN STUDIES DECEMBER 2012 By Benjamin Hedge Olson Dissertation Committee: Kathleen Sands, Chairperson David E. Stannard Vernadette Gonzalez Roderick Labrador Helen J. Baroni Keywords: metal, popular music, popular culture, religion, subculture, Hawai‘i 2 Abstract The island of Oahu is home to probably the most ethnically diverse metal scene in the United States. Contemporary Hawai`i prides itself on being a “model of multiculturalism” free of the racism and ethnic strife that is endemic to the continent; however, beneath this superficial openness and tolerance exist deeply felt class, ethnic, and racial tensions. The metal scene in Hawai`i experiences these conflicting impulses towards inclusion and exclusion as profoundly as any other aspect of contemporary Hawaiian culture, but there is a persistent hope within the metal scene that subcultural identity can triumph over such tensions. Complicating this process is the presence of white military personnel, primarily born and raised on the continental United States, whose cultural attitudes, performances of masculinity, and conception of metal culture differ greatly from that of local metalheads. The misunderstandings, hostilities, bids for subcultural capital, and attempted bridge-building that take place between metalheads in Hawai‘i constitute a subculturally specific attempt to address anxieties concerning the presence of the military, the history of race and racism in Hawai`i, and the complicated, often conflicting desires for both openness and exclusivity that exist within local culture.

With recent appearances in JackAss, The Bonnie Hunt Show and next in Rob Reiner's new movie Alex and Emma, the legendary King of Confetti, Rip Taylor, has been introduced to a new generation of fans, which is another reason he has a star on Hollywood Boulevard for movies, film and television. Although most of his new admirers don't realize it, Rip Taylor has dazzled audiences worldwide in a career that has spanned over forty years. A master of comedic timing and consummate showman, Rip has headlined in Las Vegas, appeared on hundreds of television shows, played the lead in various plays and musicals, and frequently taken a dramatic turn in feature films. It is no exaggeration to say that Rip Taylor has succeeded in every facet of the entertainment industry. The phenomenon that is Rip Taylor began when Ed Sullivan could not remember the young comedian's name; he introduced Rip as "The Crying Comedian." Ed Sullivan accidentally stumbled upon Rip's niche, and after that appearance Rip found himself booked solid for months. This taught the young performer the importance of having a memorable hook. Bright costumes, outrageous props, wacky wigs and colorful confetti soon followed - and Rip Taylor became a pop culture sensation. Rip is one of television's most recognizable celebrities. A guest star with over 2 ,000 television appearances under his belt, Rip brought his wild energy to The G ong Show, Password, The Merv Griffin Show, The Mike Douglas Show, T he Tonight Show, Late Night with David Letterman and to the coveted c enter square on Hollywood Squares.

PUB TYPE Reports Research (143) Speeches/Meeting Papers (150) EDRS PRICE MF01/PCO2 Plus Postage. DESCRIPTORS *Childrens Television; Content Analysis; Preschool Education; *Programming (Broadcast); Television Research IDENTIFIERS Sesame Street ABSTRACT Following a content analysis, 85 children's programs were assigned a pacing index derived from the following criteria:(1) frequency of camera cuts;(2) frequency of related scene changes;(3) frequency of unrelated scene changes;(4) frequency of auditory changes;(5) percentage of active motion;(6) percentage of active talking; and (7) percentage of active music. Results indicated significant differences in networks' pacing overall and in the individual criteria: the commercial networks present the bulk of the very rapidly paced programming (much of it in the form of cartoons), and those networks devoted primarily to educational programming--PBS and The Learning Channel--present very slow-paced programs. • Response to This Article About the Hasbro/Discovery Hub Shift In
Response to this article about the Hasbro/Discovery Hub shift in power...which turned into another my long-winded, thoughtful rants: http://online.wsj.com/articles/discovery-to-take-control-of-the-hub-network- 1410979842 Well, that's...somewhat shocking. From what I can tell, the Hasbro/Discovery partnership in The Hub has been an amazing success. I watch the channel almost every day. Most of its programming is--and has been, for the past 3.5 years--excellent. From the original series (FiM, Pound Puppies, Strawberry Shortcake, LPS, Dan Vs., Aquabats Super Show, Family Game Night, Care Bears, Transformers, Haunting Hour), to all the other wonderful shows/sitcoms (oh my goodness!! Tiny Toon Adventures, Animaniacs, Goosebumps, Laverne & Shirley, Happy Days, Mork & Mindy, Step By Step, Who's the Boss, Family Ties, The Facts of Life, Sister, Sister, Sabrina, Atomic Betty, etc.), to the extremely well-chosen family movies (I loved it when they aired the Homeward Bound films, All Dogs Go to Heaven 2...today I saw Spaceballs...and they've just made so many other great movie picks every season.) They've been an outstanding example of listening to your viewers and giving them what they want. Even their misfires and middle-of-the-road shows are more than bearable (SheZow, animated Sabrina, Teenage Fairytale Dropouts, Kid President, Parents Just Don't Understand, and such.) If Hasbro were to grow dissatisfied with controlling six hours of its toy-based cartoons daily on Hub (which seems like a fair deal they've cut, tbh), and moved them over to Cartoon Network or Disney...well, at least the shows would still continue on, and be a MASSIVE boon to either of those channels.
