THE BIGGEST SHOW ON EARTH: The U2 360- Degree Tour and its implications on the Concert Industry An Undergraduate Honors Thesis by Daniel Dicker Senior V449 Professor Monika Herzig April 2011 Abstract The rock band U2 is currently touring stadiums and arenas across the globe in what is, by all accounts, the most ambitious and expensive concert tour and stage design in the history of the live music business. U2’s 360-Degree Tour, produced and marketed by Live Nation Entertainment, is projected to become the top-grossing tour of all time when it concludes in July of 2011. This is due to a number of different factors that this thesis will examine: the stature of the band, the stature of the ticket-seller and concert-producer, the ambitious and attendance- boosting design of the stage, the relatively-low ticket price when compared with the ticket prices of other tours and the scope of the concert's production, and the resiliency of ticket sales despite a poor economy. After investigating these aspects of the tour, this thesis will determine that this concert endeavor will become a new model for arena level touring and analyze the factors for success. Introduction The concert industry handbook is being rewritten by U2 - a band that has released blockbuster albums and embarked on sell-out concert tours for over three decades - and the largest concert promotion company in the world, Live Nation. This thesis is an examination of how these and other forces have aligned to produce and execute the most impressive concert production and single-most successful concert tour in history.

Blue & Lonesome, el seu últim àlbum, va arribar com un fantàstic accident, o com Keith Richards va dir amb el seu gran somriure, ?va ser com si un ésser diví ens hagués manat que el féssim?. No fa pas tants anys que els Rolling Stones encara respectaven aquella regla no escrita al món del rock que deia que per sortir de gira, l'excusa era tenir un nou disc per presentar, i així va passar amb les grans gires mundials desprès d'editar Steel Wheels (1989), Voodoo Lounge (1994), Bridges To Babylon (1997) i A Bigger Bang (2005). En general, la gent dona poc valor a aquests àlbums, en part potser perquè feien l'efecte de ser més una excusa per sortir de gira (que és on fan cash), que discos amb prou entitat com per recordar, jo soc més de la opinió, tot i que tinc clar que no son obres mestres, que son d'un nivell molt alt. Chuck Leavell Biography (Pdf)
About Chuck Leavell Chuck Leavell has been pleasing the ears of music fans for more than 30 years now. His piano and keyboard work has been heard on the works of Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, The Black Crowes, George Harrison, The Allman Brothers Band, The Indigo Girls, Blues Traveler, Train, Montgomery-Gentry, Lee Ann Womack and many, many more. In addition to being a well established pianist/artist in the music industry, Leavell is also a published author, long time tree farmer, co- founder of the popular website The Mother Nature Network, and keeps busy with his advocacy work on behalf of the environment. At the age of 13, Chuck got the opportunity to see Ray Charles in concert. He recalls, “Ray and the band played an incredible show, and it had such an impact on me that I made up my mind there and then that that was what I wanted to do. I decided that night what I wanted as my career.” When he was 15, Leavell made his way to Muscle Shoals, AL, and the legendary studios there, where he played on several records, including Freddy North’s soul classic Don’t Take Her, She’s All I’ve Got. In 1969 Chuck moved to Macon, GA, where Southern music impresario Phil Walden had recently opened Capricorn Records and studio. There he worked his way through the ranks recording and touring with Alex Taylor (brother of James Taylor), Dr. John, country legend Kitty Wells, The Marshall Tucker Band and others. In 1972 having just turned 20 years old, Leavell was asked to join the Allman Brothers Band.
