These comprise taxonomic research and Red List assessments, monitoring of populations and the status of habitats, monitoring of introduced species and research into their ecology and research into the status of pollinators. Further research is required on the effects of invasive species, identification of key pollinators and the effects of climate change. Red List assessments are given for threatened Mollusca, Orthopteroidea and Lepidoptera. Keywords: invertebrate conservation, invasive species, pollinators, Red List assessments, taxonomy In 2001, a meeting was held in Washington to investigate the practicalities of developing a global strategy for invertebrate conservation. This ‘Invertebrate Scoping Workshop’ proposed 8 main actions needed for the full integration of invertebrates in the planning and conservation assessments of the World Conservation Union (IUCN) (IUCN/SSC/CBSG 2001). To date, these have only been partially implemented due at least in part to a lack of funding. The recommendations are being implemented at a local level in Seychelles and this provides an indication of the relevance of these actions to developing conservation action. Taxonomic Specialist Groups of IUCN’s Species Survival Commission cover only a small proportion of the world’s invertebrates. -

Massachusetts Vulnerability Assessment 2016 Species of Greatest Conservation Need Animal Species Profiles Prepared by Toni Lyn Morelli and Jennifer R. Smetzer June 2016 1 Preface These species profiles were produced for the 2016 Massachusetts Rapid Assessment Protocol of their Species of Greatest Conservation Need (SGCN). Each profile summarizes what is known about specific SGCN species responses to climate change to date and anticipated under future scenarios and highlights where other factors are expected to exacerbate the effects of climate change. This information was obtained through a systematic review of the peer-reviewed literature, primarily using the ISI Web of Knowledge to search for papers on each species related to “climate”, “temperature”, “drought”, “flood”, or “precipitation”. A substantial amount of information was available from the Massachusetts Climate Action Tool, a project produced by Scott Jackson, Michelle Staudinger, Steve DeStefano, Toni Lyn Morelli, and others. In addition, Staudinger et al.'s 2015 Integrating Climate Change into Northeast and Midwest State Wildlife Action Plans was an important resource for these reports, including work by Colton Ellison and Stephen Jane. Ashton Moths and mountains: diversity, altitude and latitude Moth assemblages have been widely used to examine patterns of beta-diversity in forest ecosystems. This thesis aims to expand and test the generality of results obtained as part of the IBISCA-Queensland Project (Investigating Biodiversity of Soil and Canopy Arthropods-Qld) which examined patterns of diversity in a large sub-set of night-flying moths along an altitudinal gradient in subtropical rainforest. The permanent IBISCA-Qld transect, located in Lamington National Park (NP), in south-east Queensland, Australia, spans altitudes from 300 to 1100 meters above sea level (m a.s.l.) within continuous rainforest. Along this transect, moth assemblages showed strong altitudinal stratification. A number of species were restricted to the Nothofagus moorei dominated cloud forest around 1100m a.s.l., and may be the most threatened by climatic change. The IBISCA-Qld Project produced a set of moth species that could be included within a predictor set of taxa that may be useful for future monitoring of the impact of global warming on forest biodiversity. -
Insect Species Described from Alfred Russel Wallace's Sarawak Collections
Malayan Nature Journal 2006, 57(4), 433 - 462 Insect species described from Alfred Russel Wallace's Sarawak collections ANDREW POLASZEKl* and EARL OF CRANBROOK2 Abstract In just over a year spent in Sarawak (1854-1856) Wallace collected over 25,000 insect specimens; by his estimate, these represented over 5,000 species. About two-fifths of these were beetles, and over 200 of these were formally described in the 1850's and 60's, largely by 1.S. Baly and F.P. Pascoe. Nearly 400 species of moths from Wallace's Sarawak collections, including over 100 new genera, were described by Francis Walker. Fredrick Smith described 150 Hymenoptera from these collections, and taking into account Diptera and Hemiptera from the same collections, this brings the total number of insect species described to well in excess of 1,000. INTRODUCTION Alfred Russel Wallace has a reputation as an extremely prolific collector of plants and animals from many parts of the world, notably the Amazon Basin and the Malay Archipelago. His relatively brief period collecting in a geographically limited area of Sarawak on the island ofBomeo dramatically illustrates his abilities as a co llector and field taxonomist, able to recognise differences between species across a huge range of diverse insect orders. Wallace in Sarawak Alfred Russel Wallace arrived in Sarawak on 1st November 1854 and left on January 25th 1856 (Wallace, 1869). In a little more than a year, and in a rather limited geographical area of southwestern Sarawak (fig. 1), with the aid of Charles Allen and various local assistants, Wallace collected and shipped back to London more than 25,000 insect specimens. -

It originated in America and differentiated in America, Africa, and Asia. About 132 species of Vanilla have now been accepted since the discovery of the genus. Within the Vanilla genus, leaflessness has appeared at least three independent times, in Africa, Asia, and America as an adaptation to drought conditions. The South-West Indian Ocean (SWIO) region, a biodiversity hotspot for orchids, is home to seven leafless species. Chloroplast markers failed to differentiate species within this recent SWIO clade. Morphological traits used for description are very similar between species and do not provide reliable identification. Moreover, some of the species have overlapping flowering periods and geographic distribution in Madagascar, increasing the probability of finding some sympatric species and, therefore, hybrids. -

Rahamathulla Division of a Entomology, Kerala Forest Research Institute Peechi 680 653, Trichur, Kerala Received on April 30, 1993 Abstract: Insect species diversity with reference to moths was studied in representative forest habitats (viz., disturbed but well regenerating and relatively undisturbed) in the Silent Valley National Park, Preliminary data suggested rich species diversity in well regenerating forests (3.42 & 1.9)as compared to those subject to disturbances like incidence of fire (0.43). Maximum number of moths collected belonged to the families Pyralidae, Noctuidae, Geometridae and Arctiidae. Some families like Lasiocampidae Bombycidae and Gelechidae were only poorly represented. In general, the fauna bearsa close resemblanceto that of Sri Lanka although it is characterised by the presence of several endemic species having affinities with the Malayan elements. Altogether 318 species of moths belonging to 19 families were recorded in this study.
