Costa. Since, they have been discovered at some 20 sites, ranging in age from the Middle Villafranchian (Costa S. Giacomo, with both Anancus arvernensis and Mammuthus (Archidiskodon) meri- dionalis), to the Late Pleistocene (S. Anna near Veroli, with Mammuthus primigenius). Most of the relevant faunal record, however, is of Middle Pleistocene age, and is characterised by Elephas antiquus. This species was discovered, most notably, at several archaeological sites, in association with Acheulean industry, starting with Fontana Ranuccio near Anagni, which is dated to c. 450 ka bp by K/Ar. At such sites, bones of Elephas antiquus were sometimes knapped to produce bone tools, including bone handaxes. 1. PROBOSCIDEA IN THE VALLE LATINA Stephanorhinus cfr. Ci aiutano a sistemarci (per fortuna c’è ancora qualche posto comodo) ed in breve tempo anche noi siamo pronti per la prima visita dei luoghi. Ci avviciniamo al gruppo raggiungendoli sotto la Torre di Cicerone (in ristrutturazione e praticamente invisibile per i ponteggi allestiti e perchè completamente al buio).

Microzonation studies, (hereinafter MS) are widely recognized as a useful tool to investigate the variation of earthquake-induced ground shacking as a function of the geological and geotechnical characteristics of the shallow soil layers. Moreover the results of MS can be used as an instrument for urban planning. Even though already performed after seismic events in Italy both at local scale as for the 1976 Friuli event and a regional scale, as for the Umbria-Marche event of September 1997, MS studies become a standard procedure in Italy following the L’Aquila (Mw 6.3) event of April 2009 and now they are required in the areas most prone to high level of seismicity. The MS is regulated by the guidelines promoted by the Civil Defence Department (DPC) since 2008 (Gruppo di lavoro MS, 2008) and contemplates studies at three different stages of detail the simplest one being indicated as MS of level 1 (hereinafter MS1). In MS the use of recorded seismic events, either strong and weak motion types, is indicated as a useful tool for evaluating the seismic response of a site. Moreover the analysis of the recorded seismicity can be used to verify and confirm the amplification factors found using numerical modelling of seismic response as required by MS guidelines.

Historical Legacy and Policy Effectiveness: the Long-Term Influence of pre-Unification Borders in Italy Giovanna D’Adda Guido de Blasio April 2014 Abstract This paper investigates the interplay between cultural traditions and policy effectiveness. It explores the differential impact of a large development program (Cassa per il Mezzogiorno), implemented for four decades, starting in the 1950s, to stimulate convergence between Italy’s South and the more developed North, on municipalities with different histories. Namely, we consider a sample of municipalities located on either side of the historical border of the Kingdom of Sicily, whose legacy is considered, from Putnam (1993) onwards, to be a prime-facie cause of Southern Italy’s underdevelopment. Having been part of the Kingdom of Sicily is associated with a negative impact of development policies, but only when the allocation of development funds through the Cassa per il Mezzogiorno suffered from low quality of governance and was driven by political considerations rather than by efficiency ones.
