A key to the nine species, along with synonymies, descriptions, distributions, and figures for all species are given. Meromacrus melansoni BLATCH spec, nov., is described and one new synonym is proposed (Meromacrus panamensis CURRAN, 1930 = Milesia laconica WALKER, 1852). As part of the effort to document the biodiversity of Costa Rica, we here describe a new species of Meromacrus and provide additional details on the eight other Mesoamerican species. The genus Meromacrus is endemic to the New World the included species ranging from the southern United States to northern Argentina. -

Pollinator Portraits 2017 Photos: © Martin C D Speight Text: Martin C D Speight This guide has been assembled by the National Biodiversity Data Centre Pollinator portraits 2017 These portraits are not of bees, but of flies – European hoverflies, to be precise. In the landscape, hoverflies are small and can flit by unobserved. In the portraits we see them larger than life and can examine them at leisure. You are invited to send the portraits to friends and colleagues. Not so well known as bees, hoverflies play their own, and slightly different role in pollination. They are significant pollinators of various fruit trees and some other crops, like oil-seed rape. They also pollinate many wild flowers, including rare species not normally visited by bees. Hoverflies can be found in a very wide range of terrestrial and freshwater habitats. As larvae about a third of them feed on greenfly, other plant bugs, or small caterpillars and are recognised as helping to prevent epidemic greenfly infestations in cereal crops like winter wheat. Another equally large group of species is plant-feeding; these hoverflies mine leaves, stem- bases, rhizomes, tubers, bulbs or corms of herb layer plants. The rest of them grow up on a diet of bacteria, algae or other micro-organisms, usually in water or damp situations of some sort. Almost without exception, as adults hoverflies feed on nectar and pollen, visiting the flowers of a very wide range of trees, shrubs and herb layer plants, including pollen-only flowers like those of grasses, sedges, oak trees and poppies. The names of the hoverflies depicted in each portrait, along with brief notes, are included at the end of this document. -

Data on 1,477 Syrphid occurrences and floral associations from three years of pollinator collection (2017-2019) in the Southern Illinois region of Illinois, United States, are here compiled and analyzed. We collected 69 species in 36 genera off of the flowers of 157 plant species. While a richness of 69 species is greater than most other families of flower-visiting insects in our region, a species accumulation curve and regional species pool estimators suggest that at least 33 species are yet uncollected. -

PREFACE Eight years ago the author of the present work published a small volume in which he attempted to tabulate the families and more important genera of the diptera of the United States. The extra- ordinary activity in the investigation of our dipterological fauna within the past few years has, however, largely destroy- ed its usefulness, and it is hoped that this new edition, or rather this new work, will prove as serviceable as has been the former one. While the Central and West Indian faunas are preeminently of the South American type, there are doubt- less many forms occurring in tlie southern states that are at present known only from more southern regions. C. 20560 USA ([email protected]) Abstract A new genus and species of flower flies are described from the Australian biotic region (Austalis Thompson & Vockeroth, type Eristalis resolutus Walker; Austalis rhina Thompson (Solomon Is.)). A key is provided to the groups of the subtribe Eristalina, along with nomenclatural notes and checklist of genus-group names. Five genus-group names and 1 species-group name are synony- mized (Pseudomeromacrus Li, 1994 = Eristalinus (Merodonoides Curran, 1931)); Cryptoeristalis Kuznetzov 1994 = Eristalis (Eoseristalis Kanervo, 1938)); Paramesembrius Shiraki 1930, Klossia Curran, 1931 & Catacores Hull, 1944 = Kertesziomyia Shiraki, 1930; Eristalis maritima Hull, 1945 = Austalis resoluta (Walker, 1858)). Key words: Taxonomy, Syrphidae, key, Australian Region, rat-tailed maggots Introduction Eristaline flower flies are among the most common and conspicuous flower flies. These flies are common pollinators almost wherever flowers are found, being absent only in truly arid areas and the Polar Regions. The larvae of eristaline flower flies are filter feeders in all kinds of aquatic media. Occasionally these larvae are accidentally swallowed by humans, thus, causing myiasis. Otherwise, the larvae contribute to the purification of water by filtering out microorganisms and other products. These flies are currently placed into 16 genera and 400 species. -

In his immediate family, Prof. Williston stood as a conspicuous figure, as a scholar, a man of research, and one who by an innate superiority made himself what he was. For he owed little to his forebears other than the heritage of those sterling qualities which have made New Englanders in general so vital a force in the evolution of our national character and prestige; his scientific tendencies were an individual characteristic, and he stands as the only recorded Williston to follow lines of scientific research. Williston's father, Samuel Williston, was a blacksmith, and, although a man of considerable native ability, was totally untrained in the affairs of book men. He possessed, however, that pioneer spirit which impelled so many eastern men to migrate to the developing West and seek in a new environment the elusive fortune which the East did not provide. Hence, while Will- iston was born in Boston, his development, in so far as environment exerted a control, was due almost exclusively to the stimulating conditions of the newly invaded West. Here he spent his boyhood.
