This has been a subject of contention over the years by a number of critics. The need for objectivity and its relation lack of realities exhibited by the poets in their inability to define a particular role thereby limiting the expression is something which needs to be discussed (Martel, 2011). At this juncture the researchers would like to quote Squarotti who indicated that in modern Italian poetry there is still an ongoing battle to liberate the subject matter from the tyranny of the "subject" himself. This can be observed from the comment on search for “a punto di vista diverso dall'io come fonte del discorso poetico”. Along with this aspect there is also recurrence of the themes related to concept of the poet being considered as a "vate" one who is inspired by a divine power or one who narrates in a quasi-prophetic voice. This type of poetry is also quite common in modern Italian poetry as observed from the works of Ungaretti to Pasolini. Nevertheless this also in its broad outlook is found to form a part of the phenomenon of a "rifiuto dell'io" which dominates this period as the search of the poet to express himself (Ó Ceallacháin 2007). Along with this concept of subjectivity there has been a great deal of involvement of egocentricity at its extreme limits and is often presented with a poetic voice which is completely subjective. With the impact of the world wars and the industrialization there was a change from lyrical subjectivity to poetic realism (Payne, 2004). There were some poets who engaged directly in the objective reality of the world and moved away from the subjective impact of the same on their lives. With this background in mind the authors now delve into more specific themes between the years 1900s to early 1950s. The classification presented by Ó Ceallacháin (2007) has been used to discuss the same. These classifications are not very clear and may overlap periods at different points. Avant Garde Experimentation (1900-1920): This period extends from the beginning of the century to the end of the First World War when there was an in depth range of innovation and experimentation (Lorenzini, 1999). This phenomenon has been identified to lead to the use of a label "avanguardia storica” dealt with the work of futurists (Moroni and Somigli, 2004). Some of the most popular poets in this era included the famous Corazzini, Marinetti and Campana. The views presented by these authors presented contrasting temperaments among varying authors strongly drawn from the views of symbolists of the 19th century (Mazzoni, 2002). The poetry by Govoni, Corazzini and Gozzano (Mengaldo, 1978) can be identified to be dominated by the theme of melancholy. However their works also presented the first significant challenge associated with the perception of crisis in terms of ideological and artistic certainties. A very good example is the declaration of " Io mi vergogno.si, mi vergogno d'essere un poeta" by Gozaano indicating his shame. Similar presentations by Corazzini and Govoni indicate that there was a great deal of crisis as well as uncertainty which had befallen the society as a whole due to the rapid urbanization brought about by industrialization and consumerism (Govoni 2000, Corazzini 1978). Thus it can be concluded that most poets in this era had different views in terms of intellectual themes, poetic subjectivity. ITALIAN POETRY IN THE MODERN TIME - 1900 TO POST SECOND WORLD WAR 2 Lyrical introspection (1915-1945): This generation is often identified as the Hermetic Generation and was marked by the publishing of the book "La Poesia ermetics" by Francesco Flora (1936) wherein the use of the term hermetic marked the beginning of a long process of critical discussion. In his critical review Flora indicates that modern Italian poetry maybe considered being obscure and sterile and is dependent on the French symbolist tradition (Payne, 2004).

From Short Story to Film: Wayne Wang’s Film Adaptation of “A Thousand Years of Good Prayers” Wei Miao* ABSTRACT This article focuses on Wayne Wang’s film adaptation of contemporary US-based migrant writer Yiyun Li’s short story “A Thousand Years of Good Prayers.” I will first briefly recount Yiyun Li’s life story as it emerges through her published articles and interviews, although I am primarily concerned with how these autobiographical fragments provide a way to unlock Wayne Wang’s film A Thousand Years of Good Prayers, for which Li developed the screenplay. The expansion of the original short story into a feature-length film allows for a more vivid representation of the long-term emotional consequences of the political and social violence of the Chinese totalitarian regime. At a glance, the alternatives the film seems to present are, on the one hand, a life of silence under political totalitarianism, or on the other, migration to a developed western country that boasts democracy and freedom of speech. On closer inspection, however, it is revealed that the decision to be made between silence and speech is not an easy one, particularly in terms of familial intimacy.     INTRODUCTION Dalit Literature: Dalit writing is a post-Independence literary phenomenon. The emergence of Dalit literature has a great historical significance. The causes and effects leading to the age-old existence of oppression and despair of the lives of marginalized class of nation’s vast population are also observed in many other parts of the world. Arjun Dangle has defined Dalit literature as: “Dalit literature is one which acquaints people with the caste system and untouchability in India… It matures with a sociological point of view and is related to the principles of negativity, rebellion and loyalty to science , thus finally ending as revolutionary .” Most of the marginalized groups all over the world have a similar system of oppression but the titles are different as per the class and class divide. In India it was under the pretext of the Cast and in the western World it was under the name of the Race. Inequality was the main source of this marginality which led to insecurity, injustice and exploitation. Marginalized sections were always on the periphery and distanced from the power centers. In this research work the main objective is to draw similarities between the politics of Caste and Race in Indian Dalits and the American Blacks. Dalits were always on the marginalized ‘other’ side of the Indian society. So when they started voicing after centuries of silence, about themselves, we have the literature depicting assertion of human rights, self-pride, revolt against social injustice, chronicles of personal and collective suffering, and hopes and aspirations for a new society devoid of discrimination.

Though it is difficult to define translation in specific words, one can give various definitions to show the different ideas related to translations. Oxford dictionary of English language defines translation as ‘The action or process of turning something from one language into another”. It is true that dictionary is not basically meant to define terms like translation. Yet the dictionary has used the word ‘something’ which needs to be explained here. According to this defmition anything from a simple word to a work of art can be covered under this term translation. This covers a vast area and may mislead the basic concept of translation as we view it generally. Catford has defined it as “translation is the replacement of textual material of one language in another language”. According to this defmition material is replaced. A work of art does not contain only material. It has style and diction in it, which needs to be taken into consideration in translation.

But since Kerala culture is built through the legends of 'vadakkanpattukal' (ballads of the north), 'thekkanpattukal' (ballads of the south), 'pulluvarpattukal' (traditional songs of pulluvar community), 'Mappilapattukal' (traditional songs by the Islamic community) and such other 'pattu' school of poetry and the vast array of myths and legends that form the crux of Dravidian and Aryan ancestry, there could never be a total deviation. Colonialism left its deep imprint upon almost all wakes of Kerala history and literature was no exception.

  • The State, Democracy and Social Movements
    The Dynamics of Conflict and Peace in Contemporary South Asia This book engages with the concept, true value, and function of democracy in South Asia against the background of real social conditions for the promotion of peaceful development in the region. In the book, the issue of peaceful social development is defined as the con- ditions under which the maintenance of social order and social development is achieved – not by violent compulsion but through the negotiation of intentions or interests among members of society. The book assesses the issue of peaceful social development and demonstrates that the maintenance of such conditions for long periods is a necessary requirement for the political, economic, and cultural development of a society and state. Chapters argue that, through the post-colo- nial historical trajectory of South Asia, it has become commonly understood that democracy is the better, if not the best, political system and value for that purpose. Additionally, the book claims that, while democratization and the deepening of democracy have been broadly discussed in the region, the peace that democracy is supposed to promote has been in serious danger, especially in the 21st century. A timely survey and re-evaluation of democracy and peaceful development in South Asia, this book will be of interest to academics in the field of South Asian Studies, Peace and Conflict Studies and Asian Politics and Security.     Freedom’s Songs: Collective Voices in the Struggle for Freedom Jazz from A to Z Workshop for History, Language Arts and Performing Arts Educators October 2012 Goals of Jazz from A to Z • Enrich the historical and cultural knowledge of students and teachers through an integrated study of both jazz music and American/World history. • Develop and maintain historical thinking in history classes and activities. • Empower students and teachers with skills and knowledge of jazz in its historical context so as to have a meaningful experience with works of music • Enhance student musical performances Objectives of Jazz from A to Z • History students will create jazz/civil rights projects for National History Day to be displayed during JAM@MAC. The historical topics of the projects will relate to the NHD theme of “Turning Points in History: People, Ideas, Events.” Students will be evaluated using the National History Day rubric. • Student jazz bands will perform at the Essentially Ellington Regional Festival on April 4, 2013 at Mesa Arts Center and be evaluated using Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington competition rubric. • Teachers will create a lesson plan that integrates music and NEA Jazz in the Schools in their curriculum. Objectives of the Workshops • Students and teachers will analyze and interpret music (gospel, jazz, freedom songs and popular songs) as a primary source while examining the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and early 1960s.. • Students and teachers will determine the role of music as a cultural mirror in the 1950s and early 1960s.. • Students and teachers will assess the function of music as an agent of social change during the Civil Rights Movement.

    MODERNISM, POSTMODERNISM, CREATIVITY, AND COLONIALISM IN MALAYALAM LITERATURE M.G.S. Narayanan It has become fashionable among critics to indulge in the fireworks of modernist and post-modernist Jargon, obviously in a bid to perplex tile poor reader. The modernist and the post-modernist in the West invented then- new phraseology to convey something different from their existing tradition, some new experience related to social change in the twentieth century, following the two World Wars which shattered all values and banished all finer sentiments from life. They were the victims of then’ own enlightenment faith in progress, equality and peace. Then’ predicament was unenviable. This agony gave birth to cynicism about human nature and the future of civilization. Bookish Indian scholars who never went through the hell and horror of such European war-experience, but blindly aped their counterparts in the West, cut sorry figures in their comic roles as critics. Tile pretentious and hollow preaching shows the distance between them and the realities of life among the people. The artist, the poet, the fiction writer has to be an organic part of life in the society in which lie lives and moves, breaths and thinks, and shared the passion of human existence. Living in an ivory tower, or pretending to live there, is an act of snobbery in a fools’ paradise, - no, in a fools’ inferno, if there is one. In Kerala, fortunately for us, we had a bunch of writers who were steeped in tile passions, witch moved the people - poverty, betrayal in love, inequality, dishonesty, perversion, ambition, disillusionment and frustration.
