The city found itself at the crossroads of Po- lish, Lithuanian and belated Belarusian nation building efforts. In the first phase of the war, the multi-ethnic city which was also a centre of a voivods- hip and where Poles were the majority community, came under Lithuanian authority. The Soviet military and diplomatic actions played a key role in this change. The arrival of the Soviet troops halted the extensive “Lithua- nianization” process that had begun. As a result, tensions between the Polish community and the Lithuanian state eased. The Extermination of the Jewish population the city commenced with the German invasion on 24 June 1941. Before the Soviet troops reached the Vilnius Region, the Polish Home Army (AK) gained control over the rural areas. Despite the Polish plans, Vilnius was liberated with the help of the Soviet Red Army on 13 July 1944. The relationship between the Polish and the Soviet army quickly turned hostile. Moreover, violence continued to accompany population movement. Even though the Old Town remained largely intact, the demographic profile of Vilnius altered dramatically. First, it became a Russian dominated space. Following the collectivization, as a result of the influx of the Lithuanians intensified and they gradually became the majority in the city.

  • Rehabilitation and Extension of Water Supply and Sewage Collection Systems in Vilnius (Stages 1 and 2)
Summary sheet of measure No 2000/LT/16/P/PE/001: Measure title Rehabilitation and Extension of Water Supply and Sewage Collection Systems in Vilnius (Stages 1 and 2) Authority responsible for implementation Municipality of Vilnius City, Gedimino av. 9,Vilnius, Lithuania Mayor of Vilnius, Mr Roland Paksas Email [email protected] Final beneficiary SP UAB Vilniaus Vandenys Dominikonu st 11,Vilnius, Lithuania Mr. B. Meizutavicius, Director General E.mail [email protected] Description Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania with a population of 580,000. The main drinking water and sewage networks date from the start of the 20th century and are in need of immediate repair. The expansion of the drinking water supply networks, as well as replacement of the worn out pipelines and the construction of iron removal plants (within separate complementary projects) will contribute to compliance with the EU standards for drinking water by reducing the iron content from 0.25-1.2 to 0.05mg/l. Also, some 99 percent of the Vilnius inhabitants and industries will be connected to the water supply networks. It should be noted that this is the first stage of a long term plan, for which the feasibility work has already been completed, which will result in full compliance with both water quality and waste water Directives. Component 1 Rehabilitation of a total of approximately 80km of water mains in the districts of Antakalnis, Baltupiai, Fabijoniškes, Justiniskes, Kirtimai, Lazdynai, Paneriai, Pasilaiciai, Virsuliskes, Zirmunai and the Old Town by relining of approximately 73 km of pipes ranging from less than 200mm to 1000mm diameter and replacement of some 7kms of pipes are in the utility corridors Component 2 Extension of the water supply and sewerage networks to serve the outlying areas of Gineitiskes, Traku Voke, Tarande, Bajorai, Balsiai, Kairenai, Naujoji Vilnia and Riese.

  • Brazauskas in Power: an Assessment
Brazauskas in Power: An Assessment * JULIUS SMULKSTYS The victory of Lithuania's Democratic Labor Party (LDDP) in the parliamentary elections of October and November 1992 was lamented by many in the West as the return of the former Communists to power in a country that had played a major role in the dismantling of the Soviet Union. If just a few years ago Lithuania had been the trailblazer in the struggle for independence and democracy, now it seemed to be the leader in efforts to reverse the trends that began in 1988. But to those familiar with the recent history of Lithuania, the election results had no such ominous implications. They merely reflected the growing sophistication of the voters and their reliance on democratic institutions to settle political differences and to redirect as well as to reaffirm economic, social and political reforms. It was the case of a young democracy coming into its own. As in other former republics of the Soviet Union, democratization in Lithuania had to overcome numerous obsta- cles—the most visible ones being the absence of democratic political culture, relentless pressure from Moscow and the resultant siege-like atmosphere, and the rapidly deteriorating economic conditions. One of the important forces that helped to preserve fledgling democratic institutions was the Communist Party of Lithuania (Lietuvos Komunistų Partija—LKP) and its successor, Lithuania's Democratic Labor Party. Without their early commitment, the struggle for democracy and indepen- dence in Lithuania would have been much more difficult. The meaning of the 1992 elections, therefore, can only be fully evaluated and understood in the context of the party's role in promoting change, a role that originated six years ago.

  • Bogurodzica Song
History of the Origin of the Bogurodzica Song. A Musical Monument of 1407 Ivan KUZMINSKYI History of the Origin of the Bogurodzica Song. A Musical Monument of 1407 Giesmės „Bogurodzica“ kilmė – 1407 m. muzikinis paminklas Ukraine P. Tchaikovsky National Academy of Music, ul. Architektora Gorodeckogo 1-3/11, 01001 Kyiv, Ukraine Email [email protected] Abstract In Polish musical historiography, the song Bogurodzica is considered to be the oldest artifact of Polish song culture written in a staff notation. This article attempts to study the history of this song’s emergence and distribution not only against the background of Polish musical culture of the late 14th– early 15th centuries, but also under the conditions of the Kievan Rus’ and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Firstly, the article presents the main written sources of the Bogurodzica in the 15th–16th centuries and analyzes the title, verbal text and the plot of the Bogurod- zica as well as the origins of the melody. Secondly, the text focuses on Ruthenian Court Musicians of the King Władysław II Jagiełło, musical contacts between the courts of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Vytautas and the great masters of the Teutonic Order, the place and meaning of the Mother of God churches in the Kievan Rus’, battle prayers to the Mother of God in the Ruthenian princely environment, singing to the Mother of God before battle in the Kievan Rus’ and the Ruthenian cult of the Mother of God in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. This research provides new grounds to consider the Bogurodzica as a piece of work of the ancient Ruthenian culture and suggests that eventually it could be included into the contemporary musical historiography of Ukraine, Belarus and Lithuania.
