Panthers loaded up for Six-Man Shootout By Doug Radunich Two local student athletes have been selected to play in the Wyoming/Nebraska Six-Man Shootout’s third-annual all-star football game in Kearney, Neb. this summer. Wyoming’s 2014 roster includes Saratoga’s Tate Stinson and Ryan Malone. Hanna-Elk Mountain-Medicine Bow’s Roy Tomkins will also play for the team. The team is selected by nominations from every six-man football coach in Wyoming and Nebraska. Matthew Jensen, this year’s Team Wyoming Head Coach, said the 2014 Wyoming team features players from all across the state, who will play a team of high school seniors from Nebraska. Last year Jensen also coached Meeteetse’s varsity football team, which brought home the 2013 State 1A Six-Man Football Championship. “This year’s team has players from almost every corner of the state, from Meeteetse to Hulett, Saratoga to Dubois, and all places in between,” Jensen said. “They are not just selected because of their athleticism, they are also exemplary young men that have represented their communities and schools for the past four years.” Malone said the team is made up of 18 seniors who were nom- inated, and later chosen for the team, from football coaches around the state. “Our coaches nominate for us, and I think all the coaches around the state vote on the seniors they want,” Malone said. “It’s just for all the seniors from the state, and then coaches who are coaching the Wyoming Team voted on who they wanted. Pretty much any senior was eligible for it, and we have to raise $500 apiece to play, which is $9,000 for the team.” Stinson said it would be interest- ing to play on a team with players he has competed against before. “I think it will be fun to play with the guys that we’ve played so hard against, and just play football,” he said. “It will be fun to compete with them and meet new guys from around the state and Nebraska. We’ll go out a week before the game, and have a week- long practice with the team. We’ll do whatever the coach says to win.” Malone said he is hoping their home state can pull another win for a third time. “This will be third year for it, and Wyoming is 2-0 right now,” he said. “It’s a big rivalry game, and now we’re going for 3-0. The coach coached a state championship team, so he knows what he’s doing.” The game takes place at noon o n June 28 in Kearney, Neb.

Spiering takes second at Midwest tourney Staff Report Saratoga High School soph- omore Thatcher Spiering took home second place from the Midwest Classic Nationals Wrestling Tournament. Spiering competed in the 16-and-under division during the tournament, which took place April 5-6 in Kearney, Neb. He lost his second round match 2-4 to Jordan Britton, the 2014 Wyoming State Champion at 138 pounds, but Spiering beat Britton in the consolation semifinals by pinning him in overtime. Spiering won his third place match, which allowed him to challenge the second place winner, Dustin Papa, for true second. Spiering pinned Papa in the first period. “Thatcher wrestled real- ly well and showed a lot of guts coming all the way back through the consolation bracket to win the true second title,” said Luke Spiering, Thatcher’s father. “He went 8-1 for the Courtesy photo tournament and looks forward Thatcher Spiering holds his second-place trophy and to using this experience going certificate from the Midwest Classic Nationals Wrestling forward into next year’s high Tournament in Kearney, Neb. school season.” Below are the individual Spiering won in sudden victo- (Pin 1:47) round results for Spiering’s ry- won over Jordan Britton Consolation Round 2 - Spi- matches: (Torrington Wrestling Club) ering won by pin over Caine SV-1 5-3 Haarberg (Chase County Wres- Second Place Match - Spi- Consolation Round 5 - Spi- tling Club) (Pin 0:27) ering won by pin over Dustin ering won by decision over Caleb Championship Round 2 Papa (David City Wrestling Haskell (Madison) (Dec 5-0) - Jordan Britton (Torrington Club) (Pin 2:29) Consolation Round 4 - Spi- Wrestling Club) won by decision Third Place Match - Spier- ering won by pin over Nathan over Spiering (Dec 4-2) ing won in sudden victory- won Morris (Longmont) (Pin 0:43) Championship Round 1 - over Brady Brott (Team Valley) Consolation Round 3 - Spi- Spiering won by pin over Joel SV-1 2-0 ering won by pin over Sebastian Hines (North Bend Matcats) Consolation Semifinal - Berg (Skilly Mat Slammers) (Pin 1:09) WE DON’T JUST PROMISE Platte River Basin Advisory AWARD-WINNING FEATURES Group PUBLIC Meeting April 24, 2014 @ 6:00 p.m. YOU CAN USE, LIKE: AnSci/Molb Bldg, 19thSt. (N. or Go where the Arena Auditorium), Laramie, WY 3 LOCAL NEWS & GOVERNMENT REPORTING Topics to be discussed: 3 LOCAL SPORTS COVERAGE • Spring Flow Forecast – USBR 3 A FORUM FOR YOUR OPINION Easter Bunny • Platte River Basin Plan Update – WWDO 3 SPECIAL SECTIONS: • Platte River Basin Plan Groundwa- The Sno-Rag, The Christmas Candle, Winter Sports Section, ter Final Report – WSGS Santa Letters, Chariot Race Preview, Hats off to Ag, Graduation • Wyoming’s Water Strategy – Nephi Guide, The Platte Valley Adventure Guide, Back-to-School Guide, shops!
