Meols Cop High School Weekly Bulletin Week Ending Inclusive Excellence for ALL Friday 25th November 2016 Reminder of Early Closure and Inset Day Next Week [from 2 bulletins ago] Friday December 2nd is an Inset Day on our calendar, so the school will be closed for students on that day. The night before is our Reward’s Evening for the ex year 11 students who left us last year. The event will be in school this year and not Southport Theatre and other events will follow for current students in the summer term. School will close early on Thursday 1st December at 2.10. so that our Teaching Assistants and Teaching Staff can receive additional training as a group at the same time. Apologies in advance. Sad Farewell Today sees the last day at Meols Cop for Miss McQueen before she joins the staff at Highfield school in Blackpool as subject leader for English! Miss is one of the first teachers in the NW to be ‘parachuted’ into failing and coasting schools as part of a government initiative to employ outstanding teachers in the most needy areas of the country. Sophie McQueen joined us 8 years ago helping out in music before qualifying with us as a full time teacher of both music and drama. She then gained promotion to become subject leader for performing arts and has made a significant contribution to our school in terms of both her classroom teaching and her extra-curricular clubs and performances. The highlights for me have been the Shakespeare festivals and the power of ‘My Mother Said’ alongside some of the vast improvements the choir has made under her tutelage. Winning the Southport Music Festival last year was testament to the hours of after school work Miss put into the choir and performing arts in general. Sophie is a reflective teacher, always keen to improve and collaborate and she has taken on a huge challenge in her next role. I know that she has the drive and skills to make the most of this new post and to make the changes that will ensure the students and staff at Highfield are able to enjoy and achieve success in their English lessons. Good luck and thank you from all at Meols Cop. Almost Newly Wed! Mr Abram, who students will know as the man in the finance office, gets married tomorrow! We wish the new Mr and Mrs Abram a lovely day and a happy future married life. Congratulations Wes! SEND Ofsted A huge thank you from me to all of the staff, students and parents who supported MCHS when the HMI visited us this week. There were lots of volunteers to speak to the inspectors and to cover duties when senior staff were involved in the meetings. Year 11 Revision Evening What a great turn out there was for both sessions of our interactive revision sessions this Tuesday night. Thank you to mums and dads for supporting your children and to all of the teachers who organised, led and supported. So much has changed following on from the latest research re learning and memory and I hope that year 11 learning ‘sticks’ in the trial examinations which begin in 2 weeks! Myself and Miss O’Callaghan have worked hard to get this off the ground and we are regularly discussing issues around added sugar with students; both in lessons and during form time activities. In conjunction with this, we would now like to draw your attention to the term health and how this can be achieved by your son/ daughter taking part regularly in after school sports clubs. Being healthy can be defined as: “A state of complete mental, physical and social well-being; not merely the absence of illness or infirmity”. So being healthy isn’t just about being free from a disease or illness, but about a holistic approach to our mental, physical and social well-being. There are a million and one different reasons as to why we should all exercise on a regular basis and a few of these are highlighted below. Mental benefits include: improved confidence relief of stress/tension (often caused by exam pressure) relief of stress related illness Physical benefits include: improved fitness improved body shape improved posture Social benefits include: meeting people making friends socialising with friends Also being a member of a sports club and regularly participating in sport will develop personal qualities from: co-operation – working with others competition – testing yourself against others physical challenge – testing yourself against the environment or your best performances aesthetic appreciation – recognizing quality of movement in a performance So as the winter starts to draw in and the nights are becoming darker we always notice a drop in our after school clubs. Please encourage your sons/ daughters to continue coming to after school clubs and if you need to see what’s on please refer to the PE timetable. In particular, GCSE PE handball on a Monday (years 10 and 9), girls hockey and boxing on a Tuesday and girls archery (years 8-10) on a Wednesday, appear to be the worst hit so your help and support with this is really appreciated. Mrs Piearce-Swift SE PE Year 10 Super Stars A massive well done to the GCSE PE students from Mrs Piearce-Swift and Mr Easom’s class who have made a fantastic start to GCSE PE in particular with the theory side of the course which is now worth 60%. Keep up the hard work and make sure you are all attending handball training on a Monday. Meols Cop High School Weekly Bulletin Week Ending Inclusive Excellence for ALL Friday 25th November 2016 Congratulations Emily James for achieving the dance star of the month award, displaying; 100% enthusiasm, creativity and commitment to dance in and outside of lessons.
