Meols Cop High School Weekly Bulletin Week Ending Inclusive Excellence for ALL Friday 24Th May 2019 Meols Cop High School Weekly Bulletin Week Ending Inclusive Excellence for ALL Friday 24th May 2019 Today, we bid a fond farewell to a long and loyal servant to our community; David Jones, our Head Teacher leaves us after very nearly 40 years at Meols Cop. Joining in 1980, David served as a newly qualified teacher of history and PE. He arrived in Southport after a very sheltered life in East Manchester; his accent is still distinctive and whilst he speaks fondly of his years in the shadow of the High Peak, David is very much now a Southport man and more importantly, he very proudly has Meols Cop running through his veins. David taught mainly history back in the 1980’s and as time passed, his leadership qualities were recognised by the school and he took on the role of Head of Department. Always ready for the next challenge, David sought leadership openings wherever possible which gave him the chance to work with ever growing numbers of students, parents and fellow professionals. This drive and ambition still burns brightly today and spending just a few moments in his company is enough for anyone to see his passion for the success of the children and parents of the community which is his home. To this day, David will tell you that the most enjoyable part of any day are those moments when he has the privilege to be able to work with the students in the classroom, to share with them stories of the past and try to help them make sense of the world around them. Many of our parents have been taught by David over the years and this is so very obvious on those wonderful evenings when the doors are opened wide to welcome in so many of the important members of our community. Ever present and perennially popular, David is always very proud to extend parents a warm welcome and a chance for them to share their own school memories with him. We will miss his unique personality which is so apparent on such evenings. David, as those who know him will attest, is a very passionate person and never more so than in the classroom where he has sharpened his skills in his desire to be the best teacher he can. It has always been evident that his students, past and present, have an affection for him and in addition, he has earned the highest regard from his peers on the national stage with many colleagues admiring the work he has done in the field of learning and teaching in his role as Deputy Head Teacher, pioneering novel approaches which have been recognised and adopted by so many, often several years later. Many of the practices at Meols Cop are cutting edge, a result of the direction that David has steered the school over a number of years. In 2015, David was appointed Head Teacher. Under his leadership, our students, parents and staff have experienced many obligatory changes within the education system that have had a direct impact on school and at a time when it was needed most, his altruistic approach to his work and to life, has served us all well. As Head Teacher, David has encouraged colleagues to embrace change, to set new trends and to not fear failure, he has maintained his compassionate warmth and his desire to make things better for everyone connected with Meols Cop and also in the wider community through the extended support work that he has implemented and fostered with other schools across the country. David is still very keen to discuss his sporting life with anyone who wishes to listen and it is very clear that when his conversation gathers momentum, so does his competitive nature and before long, that familiar glint in the eye of every passionate person begins to intensify. We have no doubt that this will serve him well as the next chapter of his life begins. And so, we thank Mr Jones, for being the dedicated newly qualified teacher who ended his single- school career as its equally dedicated Head Teacher. Thank you for all the years in between and for all of the thousands of lives that you have affected in this community. Meols Cop will continue to serve as it always has and it will be forever shaped by your enormous contribution. We wish you a fabulous retirement Mr Jones. Meols Cop High School Weekly Bulletin Week Ending Inclusive Excellence for ALL Friday 24th May 2019 On Wednesday 22nd May we took our year 7 boys to take part in the annual North Sefton Cricket Tour- nament. For most of our team it was our first experience of cricket, upon arrival it was clear to see that many of the pupils who were in attendance were regular players of club cricket. The boys were not fazed and set about their first game which ended in a nail biting ending and a mar- ginal 15 run defeat to Stanley, the end result was Stanley 247 – 232 Meols Cop. As the games progressed our confidence grew and we began to play some fantastic cricket and the early favourites Formby were worrying as we scored 257, unfortunately Formby’s superiority and reg- ular cricket plays (some representing the county) proved the difference and during their batting in- nings they put on an astounding 302 runs. We continued to show our grit and resilience and faced a good Christ the King team. Christ the King batted first and put on 222 runs, the score card showed our excellence in the field and through our accurate and ever improving bowling. Nevertheless 222 was a good total for our boys to chase down. We set about our task with some outstanding batting and some quick fire boundaries. The boys grew and grew with confidence and put on a truly magical batting display scoring 247 runs to beat our opponents and secure 3rd place. The boys involved were excellent, they conducted themselves exceptionally well and showed real grit, determination and resilience to achieve 3rd place. This was a great achievement to be crowned 3rd place across North Sefton especially as for many of our boys it was their first experience of cricket. Well done boys! Thank you Meols Cop High School Weekly Bulletin Week Ending Inclusive Excellence for ALL Friday 24th May 2019 Make your own bread and butter Year 9 had a churning time recently when they had a visit from Taylor Shaw who delivered a hands on practical activity for the students. Each student churned their own butter and had the opportunity to make flatbread to develop their bread making skills. Students thoroughly enjoyed eating their bread and butter which was served with a paneer cheese. Pic : Mark Jarvis-Mayren 9CM The writer J K Rowling doesn't actually have a middle name . Anticipating that the target audience of young boys might not want to read a book written by a woman, her publishers asked her to use two initials rather than her full name. As she had no middle name, she chose K (for Kathleen) as the second initial of her pen name. Kathleen was her grandmother . Meols Cop High School Weekly Bulletin Week Ending Inclusive Excellence for ALL Friday 24th May 2019 North Sefton Girls Basketball Tournament The girls basketball tournament was a huge success and thank you to all staff who came out to support. A big thank you personally as well to the PE department, Mr Abram, the caretakers, the front office and to the year 9 helpers who really did make a difference in the smooth running of the tournament. The girls as always, played with determination and drive and have worked so hard in the lead up to the tournament. Year 7s came 3rd. Year 8s came joint 2nd to Greenbank but then came 3rd on baskets scored. Year 9s came joint 1st to Formby but then came 2nd on baskets scored. Year 10s won. Well done girls a tremendous effort and although I know you are disappointed with some of the places you finished, remember this does not represent how hard you worked, your team work and your commitment so please be proud of yourselves, because we are immensely proud of all of you!     Meols Cop High School Weekly Bulletin Week Ending Inclusive Excellence for ALL Friday 25th January 2019 Dear parents, students and friends of Meols Cop, When I first started teaching here in September 1980 I had absolutely no idea that I would still be here in 2019 and as your Headteacher too! There have been some wonderful successes over the years, some marvellous stories to tell and our school is now in a very strong position to continue to move forwards and continue to deliver the high quality of education that you expect of us. I have taught different generations of families and watched 11 year old children become 50+ year old adults and I shall always remember the warmth and support that our community has shown to me. I am almost an honorary Sandgrounder now or as close as an old Mancunian can get! With our school over-subscribed again, financially stable and with the most fantastic supportive colleagues, governors and parents a Head could wish for, it is without doubt the right time for me to retire from Meols Cop and to hand over to a new Headteacher who can drive Meols Cop upwards and onwards. Our school provides a fantastic opportunity for the right person and I know that the reputation of the school will bring candidates of great quality and potential to interview and the successful applicant will be an extremely lucky person indeed. I will say more as the final time approaches for me to say goodbye and will keep you up-dated as to who the next Headteacher will be after the interviews have taken place.

As outlined in my initial letter, as well as looking at key areas of the subject, the visit had a particular focus on provision for teaching and learning about Britain’s diversity. The visit provided valuable information which will contribute to our national evaluation and reporting. Published reports are likely to list the names of the contributing institutions, but individual institutions will not be identified in the main text. All feedback letters will be published on the Ofsted website at the end of each half-term. The evidence used to inform the judgements made included: interviews with staff and pupils, scrutiny of relevant documentation, analysis of pupils’ work and observation of nine lessons. The overall effectiveness was judged to be satisfactory, with some good features. Achievement and standards Achievement and standards in citizenship are satisfactory. Pupils demonstrated good understanding of some aspects of the citizenship curriculum, but overall their knowledge is patchy. The lack of assessment in citizenship makes it difficult for staff to identify progress within and between key stages and the school is right to seek to develop this. Lessons encourage discussion and debate and pupils have well-developed oral skills of enquiry and communication.

There have been so many exciting things going on in school each week. Thank you to the children and staff for all working so hard and thanks also to parents for their continued support for the school and their children. We look forward to seeing you after the Easter holidays ready for the final term of the year. Tag Rugby Winners It was a day to remember for our school Tag Rugby team as they were crowned Sefton Champions on Wednesday. They fought off competition from 14 schools to lift the trophy after an intense final that went to extra time. The children showed great resilience and teamwork to finish the match strongly and ensure that we won the competition. Congratulations to each of them for their hard work and effort. S w i m m i n g G a l a Winners Fourteen of our children participated in the Southport Schools Swimming Association Gala last week at Dunes Leisure Centre. Each swimmer displayed an excellent attitude throughout and gave their all for our school team. The results of this enabled the boys to come first in their competition, with the girls placing an extremely close second in theirs. Combining the results meant Churchtown were the overall winners for the Large Schools Gala and will therefore be progressing to the Regional Finals. Well Done to everyone involved! Meols Cop Dance Festival Miss Morris was so proud of the children who performed in the Meols Cop High School Dance Festival this week.
