8 Stanley High School Weekly Bulletin: 6th March 2020 th Headteacher’s update Week commencing Monday 9 March 2020 will be a Week B Year 7 Intake September 2020 This week we received our list of the Year 6 students who will be joining us in September. I am delighted that this year we will have 180 students joining our school community. This is the largest intake for us and demonstrates the excellent reputation our school has in our local community. Extra-curricular Achievements I was delighted to hear about one of our Year 8 students Marcus taking part in the rowing competition ROW3000 On HMS Prince of Wales last weekend. The team of five he was a part of had to row 3000 Miles or more and they completed it! They were rowing from 9.15am – 4.15pm with only a 1 hour break for their lunch and were raising money for the Sea Cadets. They also got to go on a full tour round the ship at the end of the competition. Both the school and his parents are extremely proud of this achievement. Well done Marcus. UKMT Maths Challenge I am delighted to say that following the recent Maths Challenge, the results are the best since 2007. Out of the 33 students that took part we had 10 Bronze awards, 1 Silver award and 2 Gold awards. I am extremely pleased to say that we also got two Best in Year and one Best in School. A huge congratulations to all who took part, but especially to Nicholas Rimmer and Bellis Shukla. Year 11 As we near the important examination period, I would like to give you advance notice that there will be multiple revision sessions taking place during the Easter break. Details will be given out nearer the time, but your child will be informed by their subject teachers, if they will be expected to attend. When we return there will only be three full school weeks before the GCSE Examinations, so this is a crucial time for students to revise and particularly in areas that they feel less confident. Should you or your child require any advice, please do not hesitate to contact the office. There will be plenty of additional revision sessions over the coming weeks and further information to follow with help and guidance for students to get the most out of their time left. Sport Relief fundraising Next Friday 13th March is the bi-annual sport relief fundraising day. As a school we will be holding a MUFTI day, which we ask students to donate a minimum of £1 to fundraise. We are suggesting a Sporting theme or the colour Red to tie in with the sports relief colour scheme. I am pleased to say that the PE department are once again getting involved by organising a Basketball Game with Staff vs Year 11 students. This is always a very popular event, with a no holds bar ‘want to win’ attitude from both teams. Let us see who comes out victorious! Students have been rehearsing after school, and once again a huge thanks to Miss Cregg for all of her hard work and support to students. Tickets are on sale from the Finance office at a cost of £3.00 each. Word of the week As you may know, we have a word of the week that we encourage students to use during their day-to-day learning and each week the word will be displayed in classrooms and around school. The word for next week will be ‘proprietor’ and we hope students do their best to use the word within lessons, they often like to catch the teachers out be using it when not expected. Proprietor – noun– the owner of a business, or a holder of property Lego Club This week we were joined by some of our lovely Year 9 boys. Miss Smithies was pleased to see such a huge turn out from students in Years 7-9. The winner of the build this week was a roller coast er made by two of our Year 7 girls. Well done! Lego club runs Tuesday lunchtimes. Please bring a packed lunch so you have more building time. If you are able to donate any Lego to the school, please contact Miss Smithies on [email protected] or call into the school office. Maths and English Form time Challenge Each fortnight we hold a new challenge, all challenges and answers can be found at the link below, students should see Mr Hooton for any further details. https://stanleyhigh.co.uk/fortnightly-challenges/ Congratulations to 9DE for correctly answering the previous challenge. She was inspired by artists Melanie&Nicolas who specialise in making pet portraits. This sketch is part of Caitlin's ideas book for her final piece for her ‘Colours in Nature’ project. Well done Caitlin. English World Book Day Our students amazed us on World Book Day with their creative ‘Bake a Book’ designs. The library was full of beautiful cakes which were very artistically designed to represent our favourite books and characters. Judging the competition was exceptionally difficult, so well done to all of our entrants. Our final winners were Freddie, Olivia and Josh. The best part of the day had to be the cutting and tasting of the cakes and it was agreed by all that the cakes tasted as good as they looked! During the day, 14 of our students also ventured out to Tibbi-Tots nursery in Birkdale, with the very rewarding task of leading story time with their toddler group. It was a brilliant experience for our students and wonderful to hear such positive feedback. A special mention must go to James and Amy who created a puppet show for the children which was a great success. Thank you to Miss Taylor and Mr Walker for accompanying our students. Back in school, many students engaged with the Character Treasure hunt which got quite competitive during lunchtime! Many thanks to Miss Navin for organising this. Drama After an incredible turnout for our auditions, Miss Taylor has now assembled her final cast for our summer production of ‘Alternative Annie’. Rehearsals have been going fantastically well with our talented and well-motivated students. If you would like to see some ‘behind the scenes’ footage of our rehearsals, please check out the short video link on the schools Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/stanleyhighsouthport Fleetwood Road, Southport, PR9 9TF 01704 228940 [email protected] www.stanleyhigh.co.uk General Document 8 Stanley High School Weekly Bulletin: 6th March 2020 PE Sports news Our Year 11 GCSE students were involved in their final practice moderation at Litherland High where they participated in Athletics with students from Birkdale, Christ The King, Meols Cop and Formby High Schools. The students covered various events ranging from sprints, distance runs, long and triple jump and finally shot and discus. As always the standard of performance from our students was extremely high and our students will be participating in their actual practical moderation in the first week back after half term. Good luck to all of our students. Netball News Year 9 girl’s played in the Southport and Formby Schools Netball Tournament last week. The girls hard work and dedication in their training sessions thoroughly played off as they finished 5th overall with some convincing victories over Greenbank and Christ the King schools. Despite the cold and windy conditions (which made shooting rather challenging) the girls showed excellent determination and team work skills. We are incredibly proud of them, well done girls. Football news It was the first of our 6-a-side tournaments this half term with the Year 8 football team playing teams from Meols Cop, Christ The King and Formby High. The tournament played out true to form with Stanley A team winning 2 groups games, 10 goals to 0 and 16 goals to 0! Formby however also won their 2 group games and so a final against the current Merseyside Champions was to take place. In an end to end game Formby just edged Stanley in a brilliant game that was played with both great skill and respect from both teams. Well done to all the students who participated and it will be the turn of our Year 9 team next week to hopefully go one step better.
