Former reference: Misc.Ms. 187. 17 LONDON METROPOLITAN ARCHIVES Page 7 SPITALFIELDS MARKET CLA/013 Reference Description Dates CLA/013/AD/02/003 Spitalfields Market Extension: laying of 1926 foundation stone Mon. 13 Dec. 1926 The foundation stone was dug up on the site and was stated by the City Surveyor to be a 'glacially transported boulder of the carboniferous age from the Midland Valley of Scotland'. The glass jar placed underneath contained copies of the City Press and The Times and coins of the realm. Source: City Press Sat. 18 Dec. 1926 (Guildhall Library) In April 1991, the glass jar placed under the Foundation Stone in 1934 was recovered by the City Surveyor's Dept. It was passed to CLRO (by the Public Relations Office) for temporary storage pending the replacement of the jar in the new Spitalfields Market at Temple Mills. The jar contained the following (printed) items (generally in poor condition) : issues of The City Press 16 Nov 1934, & The Times 27 Nov 1934; List of Members of the Central Markets Committee [1934]; List of Aldermen, Deputies & Common Councilmen 1934.
