Russell Department of Botany, The University/Liverpool L69 3BX, England ABSTRACT: The salinity tolerances of Baltic and Atlantic populations of Fucus vesiculosus and Chorda filum have been measured using net photosynthesis as an index of tissue damage. Atlantic Fucus proved to have a broader salinity tolerance than Atlantic Chorda, a result which is consistent with others published on the tolerances of intertidal and sublittoral marine species. The optimum salinity for all Atlantic plants was 11 or 34%0, but that of all Baltic plants was 6%o. Baltic Fucus and Chorda were different in breadth of tolerance, in spite of the fact that they inhabit the same sublittoral habitat. This difference is interpreted in relation to their respective life-forms, Fucus being perennial and Chorda annual. Fucus is therefore present as a macrothallus at all times of year, including the critical low-salinity period of the spring ice-melt. Chorda evades damage by existing as a resistent microthallus at this time. It is concluded that the distinctive character of Baltic marine algae deserves nomenclatural recognition at some level below that of the species. The rank of subspecies would appear the most appropriate of those hsted in the Code, but none of those available is able adequately to express the patterns of variation now being reported. INTRODUCTION The Baltic Sea, like the Mediterranean, has a very narrow exit to the Atlantic Ocean, and the fact that the flow of its seawater is almost always in an outward direction, serves only to increase its isolation. -

The species, which is more common in south-western areas of the North Sea, shows tendencies to spread into the German Bight, which can be interpreted as an indication of a climate-induced range expansion. Die eher in südwestlichen Bereichen der Nordsee verbreitete Art zeigt Ausbreitungstendenzen in die Deutsche Bucht, was als Hinweis auf eine klimabedingte Arealer- weiterung gedeutet werden kann. HANCOCK Fisheries Laboratory, Burnham-on-Crouch (Text-figs. 1-9) In a previous paper (Hancock, 1955) an account was given of the feeding behaviour of the starfish Asterias rubens L. and the common sunstar Solaster papposus (L.) on Essex oyster beds. In discussion, it was stated that there was no evidence that, in the conditions described, a cultivated oyster ground provided a greater attraction than an uncultivated one. The present work was undertaken to provide information on this subject, and also on the movements, growth and ecological relationships of starfish. Further experiments were made on feeding behaviour, particularly of the young starfish. Samples required to give information on the growth and distribution of starfish were obtained from regular surveys of an oyster bed, by a series of parallel dredge hauls covering both cultivated and derelict bottoms. In November 1954, a section of oyster ground, 125 m wide, and stretching from one bank to the other (Fig. 1),was marked out at the Southward Laying, River Crouch. The first dredge haul was made with two 4 ft. 6in. dredges over the 125 m width, parallel to the edge of the north shore at L.W.a.S.T. and 10 m from it. Buoys were used to mark distances offshore, and subsequent dredge hauls were made parallel with each other 20 m apart, and, when time permitted, were continued as far as the south shore, giving a total of twenty-six stations. -

The reticulated dragonet, Callionymus reticulatus, was originally described based on a single specimen, the holotype from Malaga, Spain, south-western Mediterranean, probably collected before 1831. The holotype is now disintegrated; the specific characteristics are no longer discernible. The species was subsequently recorded from several north-eastern Atlantic localities (Western Sahara to central Norway), but missing in the Mediterranean. Material and methods. Specimens of C. reticulatus were observed and collected during two cruises in 2014 and 2016 in the Balearic Islands off Mallorca and Menorca. The collected specimens (8 females) have been deposited in the collection of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HUJ). All individuals of C. reticulatus were collected from beam trawl samples carried out during the DRAGONSAL0914 in September 2014, and during the MEDITS_ES05_16 bottom trawl survey in June 2016, on shelf and slope bottoms around the Balearic Islands. Both surveys used a ‘Jennings’ beam trawl to sample the epi-benthic communities, which was the main objective of the DRAGONSAL0914 and a complementary objective in the MEDITS_ES05_16. The ‘Jennings’ beam trawl has a 2 m horizontal opening, 0.5 m vertical opening and a 5 mm diamond mesh in the codend. -

Here are the descriptions you need to find tasty flowers and nutritious greens to go with every meal of the day. Beach peas In the spring, the beach pea plant (Lathyrus maritimus) has beautiful purple or fuchsia flowers amid the pale green leaves. If you look at the same plants again in July and August, you’ll often see hanging pods (similar to common garden pea pods) with three to eight small peas inside. Since the peas are under- sized, it might take too much time to collect for a meal, but they taste like regular peas and can be eaten and cooked in the same way. Beach pea tendrils, located at the tip of the plant, can be snipped and lightly steamed. Look for the beach peas on both the south- and north-shore beaches, in the dunes and around Writer Holly Bellebuono and her daughter, Madia, collect wild roses that were likely once cultivated. -

This study provides a comprehensive characterization of the chemical composition of 15 Arctic red algal species from the perspective of their practical relevance in medicine and the food industry. We show that several virtually unstudied species may be regarded as promis- ing sources of different valuable metabolites and minerals. He runs wonderful courses on wild foods and foraging (not always the same thing) throughout the year and more details are Wild available on his website at www.wildmanwildfood.com food Fergus Drennan gets out his bucket and spade and goes in search of edible seaweeds. ummer is the absolute best time for collecting Sun, sand seaweeds, and with a number of inspirational cookbooks and guides published this year, now could not be a better time for getting your feet wet! This is my second article on seaweed for SCountry kitchen. The first (August ’09) can be seen on my website (www.wildmanwildfood.com) and includes a few health and safety issues. Legally the situation is somewhat complex. See John Wright’s excellent little book (details below) and seaweed for the head-scratching details. Also check for lists of Biodiversity Action Plan and Red Data Book species before harvesting anything. There may also be issues with where you collect, if they are Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs), Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) or National Parks. Permissions to gather, when and where necessary, may also depend on whether you Eggwrack seafood parcels are collecting for your own consumption or for sale (please don’t do the latter!). If in doubt call your local Natural England office or contact the marine section of the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC). For water quality information, call the 690-odd seaweeds Environment Agency. From the 690-odd seaweeds (not all edible) that are found in (not all edible) are found UK waters, I’ve chosen a handful to work with, selected to show in UK waters. -

The study of the Portuguese marine ichthyofauna has a long historical tradition, rooted back in the 18th Century. Here we present an annotated checklist of the marine fishes from Portuguese waters, including the area encompassed by the proposed extension of the Portuguese continental shelf and the Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ). The list is based on historical literature records and taxon occurrence data obtained from natural history collections, together with new revisions and occurrences.
