Among these developments, IRPC has seen a new vision and corporate structure to prepare our organization for taking the leadership as the fully-integrated petrochemical player. IRPC also has operated proactively to better respond to the needs of our customers, increased our competitive advantages, created more value to our business, expanded our range of products to be more advanced and varied, and invested in product innovations. To support our continued growth and expansion, a number of projects have been undertaken, for example, Refinery Performance Improvement Project, ABS Production Expansion Project, Propylene Booster Project and green product development research to reduce emission. Our projects also include the property development and deep-sea port project aiming at making the best use of our existing resources. IRPC believes that having personnel with high potential is a vital factor to our accomplishment and we are committed to develop our personnel aligning with the line of relevant international standard to better equip them for the future of IRPC. Along with our operation, IRPC considers it of great importance to grow sustainably and continuously but at the same time being responsible for the environment, society and community. For IRPC to grow and develop steadily amidst the rapid economic changes and strive to become the leading petrochemical complex, the Company has initiated the Phoenix Project with the objective to increase competitiveness and monetize existing assets. The project is carried out by ascertained increasing returns on investment including defining the direction taken for the growth of the Company by increasing production in business lines that provide the highest returns. The Phoenix Project will enhance the economic value of the Company and further increase returns on investment. The Phoenix Project consisted of several sub-projects covering every business segment enhancing the Company to achieve the vision “To be Top Quartile Integrated Petrochemical Complex in Asia by 2014”. “Phoenix - a symbol of resurrection and immortality” Phoenix is a mythical bird which has its counterpart in many folklore and legend around the world. Ltd., Petchburi, Thailand: 2013 Paperback, 216 pages; ISBN: 978-616-335-347-4 By Absorn Meesing* Overview This work is an English translation from the Thai of the poem titled “Nirat Muang Phet”, or The Journey to Petchburi, written by Sunthorn Phu (1786-1855). Sunthorn Phu is Thailand’s best known royal poet, the People’s Poet of Thailand. For his bicentennial in 1986, he was honored by UNESCO as a great world poet(Tourism Authority of Thailand, Sunthon Phu Monument, retrieved Jan 2016). Critics equate him to Shakespeare and Chaucer in the range, quality, and national importance of his works (Chanpeon, Kenneth, 2003). In schools, Thai students study and recite Sunthorn Phu’s poems, including Phra Abhai mani, which is one of his masterpieces. Despite his honoured literary status among Thais, Sunthorn Phu is virtually unknown outside Thailand because his works have not been translated. Sawanee Nivasabutr started her translation career at the age of 70 after retirement from many years of work at the World Bank in Washington D.C. Her works include translation from English to Thai and from Thai to English in a wide range of genres: novels, short stories, documentaries, academic articles, legal documents (laws), government contracts, poems, and literary works of well-known and/or award-winning authors. She received an outstanding translator award in 2014 from the Translators and Interpreters Association of Thailand (www.thaitiat.org). Sawanee picked “Nirat Muang Phet” (The Journey to Petchburi) with two purposes in mind and two groups of readers, local and international.

The literary texts are often reinterpreted and adapted for today's Thai audiences, and at times, individual characters appear outside their original contexts. Thai Language Day is observed every year to raise awareness of the proper use of the Thai language and to help preserve it in Thailand forever. Pra Sunthorn Phu is Thailand’s best-known royal poet in the reign of King Rama II. He was renowned for composing verses, and his epic poetry is popular in Thailand to the present day. He wrote countless pieces of verse and prose. Sunthorn Phu was declared a World Poet by UNESCO in 1986. Sunthorn Phu Day falls on June 26. We were on summer holiday then. That’s why we celebrated Sunthorn Phu Day and Thai Language Day simultaneously. At the event, children dressed like the protagonists as in Sunthorn Phu’ s poems and showed on stage, acting or singing as in the poems. Prizes were given to those who could act well as in the poem. All students had fun and it made the children remember the poems forever. There was also quiz competition about Thai Language Day and Sunthorn Phu Day. It was exciting for the children. His reign has been called a "reconstruction" of the Thai state and Thai culture, using Ayutthaya, the old capital, as model, but at the same time not slavishly imitating all things Ayutthayan. He established the present capital of Bangkok (1782-1809) in 1782 and found the Royal House of Chakri, of which the ruling Monarch, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, is the ninth Rama. The aspect of his reign has been interpreted as a major change in the intellectual outlook of the Thai elite, or a re-orientation of the Thai world view. During his reign, attacks from nearby enemies were frequent, but he was able to defeat the enemies as well as counter attacks. At this time, Chiang Mai was added to the Thai Kingdom, and the Malay states of Kedah, Perlis, Kelantan and Trengganu all sent tribute to King Rama I.     Southeast Asian Studies, Vol. 49, No. 2, September 2011 Thai Adaptations of the Javanese Panji in Cosmopolitan Ayutthaya Christopher Joll* and Srawut Aree** This article considers the curious case study of Thai literary networks in the late Ayutthaya, the networks’ adoption and adaptations of the Javanese Panji epic, and what these innovations reveal about the form of cosmopolitanism that existed until the late Bangkok period. While windows into what we refer to as Siamese cosmo­ politanism have been reconstructed by historians in accounts of Persian, Portu­ guese, Dutch, French, Chinese, and Japanese mercantile networks, our treatment of this important topic expands the units of analysis to include Thai literary net­ works. Davisakd Puaksom’s excellent doctoral dissertation piqued our interest in Panji’s Siamese adoptions and adaptations, but we set ourselves the task of explor­ ing the utility of Ronit Ricci’s Islam Translated, which analyzes Tamil, Javanese, and Malay sources for Thai studies. We pursue a comparative approach to Southeast Asian historiography in ways that increase the dialogue between Thai studies specialists and members of the Malay Studies Guild. Having described the most important Thai version of this Javanese epic produced by Siamese literary networks from the Ayutthaya through to the late Bangkok period, we consider the principal historical personalities and processes that brought Panji to cosmopolitan Ayutthaya. After providing details about the presence of Javanese individuals and influences in both Ayutthaya and Patani, we introduce insights provided by literary scholars and historians concerning the notoriously ambiguous terms “Java/Jawah/Javanese” and “Malay/Melayu.” These form the foundation for putting forward arguments about Ayutthaya having fostered forms of cosmopolitanism resembling the fluid linguistic and cultural milieu that flourished in other Southeast Asian port polities.

    Maha Sura Singhanat Somdet Phra Bawornrajchao Maha Sura Singhanat (Thai: สมเด็จพระบวรราช Maha Sura Singhanat เจามหาสุรสิงหนาท; RTGS: Somdet Phra Boworaratchao Mahasurasinghanat) (1744–1803) was the younger brother of Phutthayotfa Chulalok, the first monarch of มหาสุรสิงหนาท the Chakri dynasty of Siam. As an Ayutthayan general, he fought alongside his brother in various campaigns against Burmese invaders and the local warlords. When his brother crowned himself as the king of Siam at Bangkok in 1781, he was appointed the Front Palace or Maha Uparaj, the title of the heir. During the reign of his brother, he was known for his important role in the campaigns against Bodawpaya of Burma. Across the various chapters, I expand the archives both of early Thai cinema and Thai literary history. I draw together readings of Sanookneuk (1886), the first fictional work of Thai prose, film reviews written as Thai poetry (1922), governmental letters calling for censorship of the purportedly first Thai film (1923), as well as promotional essays in English on the state-sponsored film, The King of the White Elephant (1941).

    1 The first Thai novels and the Thai literary canon Modernity in Thailand is commonly associated with the reign of King Chulalongkorn (r. 1868–1910), who modernised Thailand by appropriating many advancements made in the West. The general discourse on ‘modernity’, khwam than samai or samai mai in Thai, which mean ‘being in step with the present era, or the new age’, is closely related to the Thai obsession with khwam jaroen or ‘prosperity and progress’.1 This prosperity can be manifested by material wellbeing or intellectual prowess. For the state, prosperity is reflected in the material things—buildings, transportation, public works, etc.—that were more highly developed in 1 Siwilai resounds of the English ‘civilised’, which the Thai appropriated to represent high international culture mostly based on English aristocratic culture. Khwam jaroen has connotations of industrial artefacts of modernity—good roads and transportation, running water, electricity, brick buildings, radio and television, etc. Khwam than samai includes both cultural, behavioural and material artefacts of modernity based on a model of a secular and industrialised society. To the Thai, there is a khwam than samai sakon, or universal modernity that is not necessarily tied to the West. Japan by the turn of the 20th century, for example, is an example of a modern society for Thailand to emulate. And so is colonial India—the official dress code for males appearing in state ceremonies in Thailand today can either be thechut ratcha pataen uniform based on the ‘Raj Pattern of British colonial India’ or sut sakon, which is the ‘universal Western suit’.
