Her life ! tells us who she was: a mother, wife, daughter, niece, friend, ! neighbor, and disciple. Her presence in Jesus’ life has to have been formative. Scripture reveals that Mary lived a life of generosity, compassion, forgiveness, hope, and kindness. She was the very first servant leader in the church. She gave up her own status in the community for the sake of Jesus M bearing him, raising him, learning from him. She teaches us how to serve and how to lead. ! ! Your challenge this week is to read Luke 1: 39 56. How is God asking you to lead in a spirit of service? What is your response? ! ! ! Upcoming GIFT: ! ! Philadelphia-native St. Katherine Drexel (1858-1955) was born a wealthy heiress, yet she gave herself and her inheritance to God by founding the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, which provided services to Native Americans and African Americans. St. Katherine also founded St. Catherine of Sienna Parish in Germantown and asked the Vincentians to serve there as pastors and parochial vicars. (The parish has since merged with St. Vincent de Paul Parish.) By the time of her death, St. Katherine’s ministries had more than 500 sisters teaching in 63 schools throughout the country and 50 missions for Native Americans in 16 different states. She was canonized on October 1, 2000, by Pope John Paul II. By all accounts, St. Katherine Drexel and students from her school were regular attendees of the Monday Perpetual Novena at the Shrine. Mary, Mother and Teacher from the writings of Mamma Carmela Volume XV THE IMAGE OF THE MERCIFUL JESUS “Write my daughter, you will be the apostle of my Merciful Love. I will bless you. I will shower on you abundant graces and great gifts. I will bless the families who expose my Image. Speak to Me often and invoke Me thus: ‘Merciful Jesus, we trust in You: have mercy on us and on the whole world.’ ” Milan, April 20, 1968 The Merciful Jesus in the excessive goodness of his Heart promises that: “Whoever venerates with love and devotion in his house my Divine Image will be preserved from the chastisement. In the same way as the ancient Hebrews marked their houses with a cross made with the blood of the paschal lamb and were spared by the exterminating Angel, so it will be in these sad times for those who will have honoured and exposed my Image.” “I have invited you to be apostles of my Divine Face and I have promised you that with that Image I will touch the hearts of sinners and I will draw everyone to Me.” Milan, January 25, 1972 “My children, you all want mercy for everyone. Well then, become interpreters of our desires. Do so that in every family together with my Divine Face may enter the practice of the Rosary, just as it is, as the holy Virgin wanted it, as the saints, the virgins, the martyrs, the great and the small of every age practiced it.” Milan, May 4, 1972 Front cover: Our Lady of Good Health of Vailankanni, India.
