Illustrations of the dorsal habitus, male and female genitalia, tarsi, fore- and hind legs are provided. The possible phyl- etic relationships of this taxon are briefly discussed. Key words: Sulawesifulvius, new genus, new species, Sulawesi, taxonomy Introduction Thirteen specimens of an amazing bug, collected by fogging the forest canopy of Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park (formerly Dumoga Bone National Park), Sulawesi, Indone- sia, were found by the senior author in the collections of The Natural History Museum (London). These specimens possess an unusual set of character states which at first glance made the family status of these bugs uncertain. More detailed examination proved that they have subdivided trochanters, trichobothria on meso- and metafemora, and a cuneus, and bicellulated membrane on each hemelytron. These states indicate that they belong to the family Miridae.

TREWICK defining feature of the Hexapoda, as the name suggests, is six legs. Also, the body comprises a head, thorax, and abdomen. The number A of abdominal segments varies, however; there are only six in the Collembola (springtails), 9–12 in the Protura, and 10 in the Diplura, whereas in all other hexapods there are strictly 11. Insects are now regarded as comprising only those hexapods with 11 abdominal segments. Whereas crustaceans are the dominant group of arthropods in the sea, hexapods prevail on land, in numbers and biomass. Altogether, the Hexapoda constitutes the most diverse group of animals – the estimated number of described species worldwide is just over 900,000, with the beetles (order Coleoptera) comprising more than a third of these. Today, the Hexapoda is considered to contain four classes – the Insecta, and the Protura, Collembola, and Diplura. The latter three classes were formerly allied with the insect orders Archaeognatha (jumping bristletails) and Thysanura (silverfish) as the insect subclass Apterygota (‘wingless’). The Apterygota is now regarded as an artificial assemblage (Bitsch & Bitsch 2000).

Five species are reported for the first time for Albania, indicating insufficient baseline information on the distribution of true bugs in the region. Future sampling designs should consider the interstitial habitats, river gravel and sand banks, and adjacent dry grassland areas. Certain difficulties aside, true bugs are a significant group of insect species with de- scriptive and indicative value. Introduction True bugs (Insecta: Hemiptera: Heteroptera) are well-known descriptors and indicators of terrestrial and aquatic habitats and their ecological quality (Duelli & Obrist 1998, Achtziger et al. 2007, Rabitsch 2008, Skern et al. 2010). Due to their diversity of feeding habits, life-histories, biology, and preferred habitats, true bugs are a meaningful addition to any Environmental Impact Assessment (e.g.

In the case of insects, most published DNA barcoding studies focus on species of the Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera, Hymenoptera and especially Lepidoptera. In this study we test the efficiency of DNA barcoding for true bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera), an ecological and economical highly important as well as morphologically diverse insect taxon. As part of our study we analyzed DNA barcodes for 1742 specimens of 457 species, comprising 39 families of the Heteroptera. We found low nucleotide distances with a minimum pairwise K2P distance ,2.2% within 21 species pairs (39 species). For ten of these species pairs (18 species), minimum pairwise distances were zero. In contrast to this, deep intraspecific sequence divergences with maximum pairwise distances .2.2% were detected for 16 traditionally recognized and valid species. With a successful identification rate of 91.5% (418 species) our study emphasizes the use of DNA barcodes for the identification of true bugs and represents an important step in building-up a comprehensive barcode library for true bugs in Germany and Central Europe as well.

  • A New Species of the Genus Peritropis from Brunei (Heteroptera: Miridae: Cylapinae)*
Genus Supplement 14: 71-75 Wrocław, 15 XII 2007 A new species of the genus Peritropis from Brunei (Heteroptera: Miridae: Cylapinae)* ANDRZEJ WOLSKI1 & JACEK GORCZYCA2 1Plant Protection Institute, Sośnicowice, Gliwicka 29, 44-153 Sośnicowice, Poland, e-mail: a.wolski@ior. gliwice.pl 2Department of Zoology, University of Silesia, Bankowa 9, 40-007 Katowice, Poland, e-mail: gorczyca@ us.edu.pl ABSTRACT. A new species of Peritropis bruneica is described on the basis of specimens collected in Brunei. The key to the species of Peritropis-thailandica group from the Oriental Region is presented. Dorsal habitus of the new species and the pictures of male genitalia are given. Key words: Cylapinae, Heteroptera, Miridae, new species, Peritropis. INTRODUCTION The genera Peritropis UHLER and Fulvius STÅL are the most numerous of the subfamily Cylapinae. Genus Peritropis contains more than 70 species known all over the World (SCHUH 1995; GORCZYCA 2006a; MOULDS and CASSIS 2006). This genus is the most speciose in the Old World, where about 50 species have been reported so far (GORCZYCA 2006ab). In a recent revision of this genus from the Oriental region, five groups of species were established: lewisi, nigripenis, poppiana, suturella and thai- landica, on the basis of coloration and external morphology (GORCZYCA 2006b). The thailandica-group contains three species in the Oriental Region: P. electilis BERGROTH, P. sulawesica GORCZYCA and P. thailandica GORCZYCA. Within the material borrowed from the Natural History Museum in London, the senior author found two representatives of the genus Peritropis belonging to the thai- landica-group. They represent a new species, whose description is given below.

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The genera Peritropisca Carvalho & Lorenzato, 1978 and Rewafulvius Carvalho, 1972 are redescribed. A description of a new species of the genus Peritropisca from Indonesia—P. laticostata sp. nov. and a redescription of P. bituberculata Carvalho & Lorenzato, 1978 are provided. The genus Euchilofulviella Gorczyca, 1999 is proposed as a junior synonym of Rewafulvius Carvalho, 1972 syn. nov. A color habitus picture of the adult and male genitalia drawings of each treated species are provided. A key to the genus Peritropisca is given. Key words: Heteroptera, Miridae, Cylapinae, Euchilofulviella, Peritropisca, Rewafulvius, new species, new synonym, Irian Jaya, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Fiji Introduction The Cylapinae fauna of the Australian Region currently comprises 73 species included in 28 genera (Schuh 2002– 2013; Gorczyca 2006; Wolski 2012). Most of our knowledge about the Australian representatives of the Cylapinae is based on Carvalho & Lorenzato (1978), who reviewed the Papuan cylapines, Cassis et al.
